"...and then then I cranke'd it 30 db" Engineers and Producers PAY ATTENTION! Stop sniffing and put down the cork! How many engineers/producers do you know who dare to do that without second guessing/doubting such an extreme action? How many do you know that would actually even try something like that in the first place? My guess: very few... if any at all... A perfect example of what happens when you got the balls and the determination to do something next level; you set a new standard for others to follow.

the comment about a tiny desk being a snapshot of an artist at a specific moment in time is so true. the mitski tiny desk happened like two weeks before i saw her live fore the first time, which was the first time i'd heard of her, and it captures the same sound of that set where half the audience left before her set because the audience was elvis depressedly. and mitski has never sounded like that since

I hate when Tiny Desk artists bring a 10-piece band and 5+ background singers. Like that defeats the purpose of the tiny desk concept, imo.

I kind of disagree on some points. Sure we can all agree that he's a technically gifted musician, but jamming as many advanced theories and voice leading into your song when the chords or harmonies don't really serve the intended purpose or matches the meaning of the lyrics doesn't make it compelling art. It makes it unnecessary and busy work. Sure some people might argue that they appreciate the skill that goes into it, but can they actually admit to themselves that this music moves them emotionally? IMO, Jacob's at his best when he's working to improve on another existing vision, like producing for another artist, where he has to work within the confines of someone else's creative space. By himself, he doesn't know how to reign in all these ideas that he has to make emotionally compelling music.

Collier is a youtube musician. Nearly all of his music is only compelling when explained. He's not a good songwriter, and he can't compete with them. Steve Reich is like the same kind of innovative wacko but he actually made something worthwhile.

9:15 Man, some Tiny Desk Sessions sound MUCH MUCH better that the official studio releases. Many times I've felt dissapointed that the record lacked the vibe the NPR session had. Flat musicias tend to sound boring, like IMO Taylor Swift or Maluma, but when the vibe is there, it's not only larger than life, it's larger than the Official Releases.

I’m a location sound person by profession and a musician by hobby. I’m curious to know about the gear used. I see a lot of shotgun mics (it’s the icon of the show) used. I’ve made demos with my field recorder before. I’ve done jobs recording bands in remote spaces with lavs (tiny desk wannabees). Is there more from the interview with (I’ve forgotten his name already) the tiny desk engineer?

Tiny desk actually gets its name not from the tiny desk. But from host Bob Boilens old band Tiny Desk Unit in the 70s. They actually have the honor of being the first band to play the historic 9:30 Club in DC! Love a bit of local history

Most episodes, the stripped down nature of the experience pulls artists completely out of their comfort zones, making for beautiful moments of surprise-for us and the artists. Great concept and execution, Josh!

This might sound fanfic-y, but I honestly wonder if Kurt Cobain, had he not died, would've considered joining forces with Pearl Jam in their fight against Ticketmaster. Given Kurt's history of poverty as a child and views on capitalism, it's not too hard to imagine him being very supportive of the cause. One of the biggest bands of the time might not've been able to stop them, but maybe two could.
