The experience is everything and I can understand the point of both the sound quality and the vintage of time experience. Having it your hand the jacket and original inner sleeve priceless. Good balance on obtaining those gems pat on the back Lol I’m sure spending less for a repress is fine but again the experience. Now with that another glass of Merlot! Thank You

I have to agree with you. Always get original pressings no matter what. You only live once. Those impulse covers are absolutely beautiful. I collect them too. Can't get over how they look. Wow!

Nice vid Tim as it shows your passion for finding 1st pressings and for the quality/condition of the vinyl. I have a repress from Acoustic Sounds of Sonny Rollins on Impulse and it looks & sounds great. Living in Los Angeles as you know takes time on the road to visit record stores so I rarely visit them as they open around 11:00am - 12:00 noon. But after watching your vids and others like Bob Bradley I feel more inspired to jump in the car and blow more retirement dollars. Went to a bookstore in Pasadena last week and found a 1/2 speed double LP The Best of Sade (I noticed in the dead wax), a Nina Simone Sings the Blues, and a Vince Guaraldi LP so it’s a start. Question: any advice on how to identify 1st pressings? Do you use Discogs to do so? PS - I’ll watch some YT vids on that topic

Yes, Discogs is my go to. Thanks for your feedback.

Great to find your channel! Just yesterday I was beginning to remove things from my barn which has a big hole in the roof. I found a box of records marked Misc. Jazz. I had put these and other records in there over 25 years ago. I found 5 original Brubeck albums, all original and near mint condition. I don't remember where I bought this lot from, but I had a great time putting them in the turntable this morning.

Awesome finds! I'm lucky to have an Impulse Art Blakey. Those Colteanes are usually out of my price range and, unfortunately, I'm not in love with the labels on those later Impulse releases. For my part, after the election, I found myself spending a lot of time poring over the offerings of various ebay sellers, looking at Instagram pages, etc. And yeah I wound up bidding on things that weren't on my wishlist. We've all been there. Have a wonderful Thanksgiving, Tim.

Agreed! I enjoyed your presentation about the virtues of original pressings. The originals encompass the five senses; sound, sight, touch, taste (i.e. good), and even smell. There is an avalanche of original pressings to be found these days at a fair price. You do have to live in an area that has a "critical mass" of people that in the past have purchased and listened to records. Get them while you can as many people are looking for these entertaining art objects.

Well said! I like to think I’m in a good place as the second largest University is here. I can imagine College Professors in the 60’s buying these grails in Denver on weekends and then bringing them home to their homes. Occasionally, really nice originals will surface in my local used shops.

Two excellent scores! Found a couple Monk records in a lot for sale on OfferUp last year, including a first pressing of Monk’s Dream (Pittman) and the follow up Criss Cross , also a first pressing. Not nm, but strong vg+. Sometimes we get lucky!

I know. I used to own all the Rollins and Coltranes on Impulse, and gave them all away to a record friend in the mid-90s. Now I recover them as 2496 LP files on the 't' show. Rather still have the real discs though.

Full agree... Lovely finds Tim! I don't have many 1st pressings in Jazz. I do have several early black 'B' and other ones that sound really good though. However, since I have been collecting vinyl for about 45 years I do indeed have hundreds of 1st Rock, New Wave, etc., pressings, simply because I bought them when they came out... 😊 Thus I can claim, through no real brilliance on my part because I just bought it when it came out, that I do have a 1st US pressing of Nevermind, amongst others. BTW, I went ahead and bought that translucent vinyl pressing of Signals. I'm looking forward to hearing it and comparing it to my 1st Club pressing, which like I mentioned, quite honestly does sound very good. Appreciate your input and help with that Tim, thank you!

@@Universityofvinyl Will do sir, I'm quite curious about it. The fellow was nice enough to run it through his ultrasonic RCM for me before sending it. It's funny, people are always complaining about Discogs and saying that so many of their purchases are disappointing, but honestly in buying probably over 200 albums on vinyl there in the last several years, with good communication (first) other than maybe 2 times, I've had nothing but excellent experiences there.

Tim, do you have a general preference between mono and stereo with these vintage jazz records, RVG and otherwise?
@UniversityofvinylАй бұрын
I’m a fan of true Stereo unless it’s pre ‘63 and Mono was the 1st format\presentation of a particular album. I just enjoy a bit of imaging and separation in the stereo era.

I have been buying jazz reissues lately and own two newer pressings of Getz Gilberto the AP45 and the Speakers Corner which is known to be one of the better pressings. Last month at a little record store in Arizona I came across a stereo OG pressing for $15 so bought it with low expectations thinking the vinyl must be noisy thus the price. Aside from a few pops and clicks it turned out to be a bargain. Anyway the sound quality easily beat my two more modern versions not even close. Seems the sound of the OG is more dynamic raw and alive. It’s all subjective I know. I also listen to rock and no question earlier pressings not necessarily OG seem to be better than mass market rock reissues.

I have to disagree with you on the need to spend buckets of money for a first pressing of a record The jazz field is filled with great sounding reissues by Blue Notes Classic and Tone Poet series Other labels are reissuing classic albums that are all analog and sound wonderful The need for spending hundreds of dollars for a OG copy is overrated in my opinion
@UniversityofvinylАй бұрын
@davepounds8924 Well, kind of the main point of this episode was focusing on “obtainable” originals that aren’t hundreds of dollars.

Nope. Reissues cut off the trailing edges of the music. There not there anymore. Decays are cut off. This effects the true tone of the recording. Early pressings for me all day.
@arize84Ай бұрын
@@GordonPyzik Good for you. Everytime I have compared an RVG stamped Blue Note to a Kevin Gray reissue. I have always preferred the tonal balance of the Kevin Gray and generally sold the RVG version. In any event the sound differences weren't that great to begin with assuming you have a clean early pressing. Playing a vg+ Blue Note with surface noise is insane to me when you can get a mint all analog reissue at an affordable price.
