Oh no my missed stalemate! 😅 Thank you so much for the game Eric, it was a pleasure to play you OTB :) Well done finding e7 in the middle game, I completely overlooked that resource, and other than that it seems like my rook endgames need some serious work. In fact, there were so many "gravey" mistakes throughout the game that I thought the video might be uploaded on Thanksgiving! Regardless of the blunders, I'm happy I got the chance to play you and I'm looking forward to the next time we face off 😊

These recaps are stressful if you don’t know the result ahead of time (like me). Eric’s commentary is ambiguous enough that you can’t tell if he won lost or drew. Solid stuff Those bishops on the h file were pretty funny

Yeah, you get into one of those marathon rook endings and come away either saying: "Wow, chess is rich and strange", or "this game is such a waste of time". Years ago I would choose the latter but lately I find myself more sympathetic with the former. Thanks, and enjoy!

Hi Eric! I think there's an important endgame resource you missed. In the rook and pawn endgame (don't know the exact move, sorry) you claim you can't take the pawn on b6, since you'll lose the pawn on a3. I believe that endgame is a theoretical draw however, and a very easy position to draw at that. Your rook can sit on a7, keeping his room behind his a-pawn and keeping his king trapped on the 8th rank. Your king can shuffle to occupy the h pawn. Yasser Seirawan talks about it in his endgame book I believe. EDIT: In the endgame afterwards, I think the rook needs to hold the a-pawn that the black rook is behind, and the white king needs to stay in the bottom left corner. Trying to switch sides of the king and rook is anti-thematic I think?

At 7:37, is Ng3 not strong? Allows the rook check but after Kf8, two pieces are hanging. If Bg4, f5 seems like a reasonable move with the knight defending it.

07:17 Wait, What about NG3 in that position? Looks like it is white Bishop who is trapped, not black Knight. There will be something like this: ... - NG3 BG4 - H5 KH2 (F4 is worse, because you'll leave e4 square for the Knight) - HxG4 KxG3 - GxH3 And I think this is just better for the black with the extra pawn at the end
@devilbob

And you can't take a pawn at e6 at any point, because after Kf8 both rook and bishop will hang

Great question! I remember calculating something similar during the game, but I was worried about lines like Ng3 Rxe6+ Kf8 dxc5!? (oh no my rook) fxe6 cxb6+ kg7 b7! and the position becomes unclear with my rook being trapped in the corner. Still it might somehow be objectivly good to grab the pawn, but i figured it was unnecessary to give him such counterplay and I thought consolidating my extra pawn up should be enough, and therefore completing development was my main focus.
@devilbob
@devilbob Жыл бұрын
@@JacobTGrave In that line I think it is save to play: dxc5 - bxc5 Bxc5 - Kg7 And there are no good checks, white pieces are still hanging. Tough position to fully calculate actually, better run it all with the engine, but I belive that Black will be better at the end

I’d rather watch a Rosen video with “grave misstakes” than a Carlsen video strangling his opponent to death, squeezing water from a stone, not even caring or trying his best, just to subtly insult, mock or disrespect his opponent. If I want to watch perfect chess, I can watch Stockfish or Alpha Zero games. Erik’s ideas are smart enough so I would never come up with them, but not so smart that it’s impossible to follow. Thanks for making chess so enjoyable every time!
