Just wanted to toss something out there. Nanachi was pointed out to be very smelly in their youth and is implied to be avoided because of it. As part of their transformation they gained a very alluring scent and a body that attracts the proximity of other people. Whether this is an internalized desire manifested (since they can be rather averse to touch) or just what the abyss thought what be a blessing or something else is up for grabs

The height chart's actual measurements are actually fan speculations made years ago in a 4chan thread. I think that they made an updated version of it not too long ago as well based on newer information from Tsukushi's streams. The original one doesn't have those, and can be found in the doorbeetle.

Just to point out some TL things which were clarified by the official TL, 36:45 "Same as Juuso" is a mistranslation, official TL clarifies that she says "Two Juusou as well" which to me seems more like she's assuming Nanachi and Faputa to be Juusou just by their appearance, which is incredibly likely considering the explanation we get about Juusou in chapter 65. 37:28 "Layered Beings" is also a bit of a mistranslation, official TL says "Yours which is many piled up" still implying nishagora to have multiple layers of souls. Dude, this was way more in-depth than I expected. The mystery I have been focusing on most is clawbot. We also may have already gotten a glimpse of her. Tsukushi has drawn a character with the same markings as hers in the official art works book. It’s a drawing with most of the characters, and there’s this green haired character with white markings that’s just randomly there. Until the movie came out where we saw color on clawbot’s, or rather “girl-type”, appearance, nobody really thought much about this random character that appears in a drawing filled with prominent character. That being said, the character does look like a boy to me, so it might just be a whole nothing burger. But if that’s the case, who is this character? He also shows up on vol 4’s back cover. Sorry the long rant, but this mystery character just makes so freakin curious!

Looks like the amount you have to ascend depends on the speed and the strenght of the force field. As some parts have no force field (like Nanachi's home in the 4th layer) and in Edo Front there is that one strair that is blocked and probably has a very concentrated field in it. And the form a blessed hollow takes is still dependent on what they want. Bondrewd wanted a strong body. Nanachi wanted to be accepted and smells nice because as a kid she was stinky (at least in the anime a kid calls Nanachi stinky and shoos her away.)

I think the most interesting part for the anime, at least for me, is that its such an interesting story on the struggles and pressure people go through to "find their treasure", wether it be riko finding her mother, nanachi trying to help mitty or reg remembering his past, just to name a few. Everything the characters go through (even if disturbing at times) is meant to be the harshest of the abyss. Nothing in this show should make you think "this isnt all that troubling". The writer did this perfectly. Considering the story line with pseudo water, its something as simple as your very essence of living with food and water being challenged. Its my fav anime because it pushes its main characters beyond what the average person ever would and you can see their atittude change slowly over the story. 10/10 would watch into the next 2000 years.

What I love about this manga is how we can speculate about everything to come, I remember people finding out how irumyuui was gonna turn into the village before it was revealed, that was awesome and something you just miss if you're not there when it's happening And since the mangaka releases chapters so slow it gives us time to develop theories

I agree with you on the idea of Nanachi having 'had' a gender prior to the 'blessing' and not having one afterwards, and that the decision to leave Nanachi quite androgynous in the flashbacks was intentional by Akihito Tsukushi to deliberately guide people away from coming to a particular conclusion about Nanachi's gender.

one thing i find kinda interesting for some reason is the choice of voice actor for Nanachi. ive mainly watched Made In Abyss in dub, and the voice actor for Nanachi is the same as the voice actor of Rimuru in Reincarnated as a Slime. The reason i find it interesting is both characters are kind of genderless but also not. its hard to explain exactly what i mean, but its interesting to me that the same voice actor is used for both of those characters in the dubs. i honestly do think nanachis dub va is great, and side note, ozens english va is really fuckin good too imo

my headcanon is that the curse in the abyss is some sort of field, its not a "curse" in the magical sense, its as if you called radiation a curse. the deeper in the abyss, the denser the field gets, and thus the particles ta go through you when ascending (the inverted spikes) destroy your body more and more, in the beginning layers causing mild damage, destroying your mucus, and in the later layers, even your DNA and body structure, as if decompressed.

Made in abyss is a very Unique thing. It really channels that spirit of European exploration in the 15th to 18th century. People setting off to trecherous untamed lands driven by curiosity experiencing some of the most horrible and dangerous places to evist, but not regretting a thing of it for they were as dangerous ast hey were beautiful.

It’s something I’ve heard around for a while and I think it’s an easy explanation to Pakkoyan and Vueko. Irumyuii says that Vueko smells like, quoting, “like mating with many people”. That, combined with the fact that she was infertile from her childhood experiences, hints to her being a “reliever” for the Ganja squad. You can see Vueko doesn’t exactly pay much attention to Pakkoyan in general, that’s my understanding of the situation.

(sorry for my bad english)I recently analised the manga for the sake of awsers, and got 2, theorys 27:46 i think that the full version hariyomari song is a curse repelent (when cravali was climbing the cliff singing the song he was not being afected by the curse, he even tries to sing it quietly to not attract beasts) 10:44 i think that faputa sigils is a countdown of how many time she can regenerate herself without consuming others value(in the manga when she figths the giant creature with a wounded head and torso you can see 4 "petals" on her sigil, and when she regenerate the 2 part by herself the petals are reduced for 2) They are just theories dont take my word as law, i maybe wrong

I heard someone else mention this in a different video, but have you noticed how the opening to the abyss looks like an eye? The hole itself being the pupil and Orth/the island surrounding it is the sclera. The comment also mentioned that the saying "if you stare into the abyss long enough, the abyss stares back at you." Comes to mind.

7:52 Real world explanation is probably Tsukushi wanted to draw a boy in a maid outfit. In world explanation I think isn't Ozen being weird but that maid clothes are the cloeset equivalent in Ort to the "moon clothes" that people like him from his country of origin that are weak to sunlight wear to avoid getting sick to it.

I really can’t think of anything else on this level. Maybe Berserk, or the Fear & Hunger games? I really like the worldbuilding and lore in those. Maybe also the Xenoblade games, if you want a neat and bizarre setting, especially because the first inspired Made in Abyss. Hollow Knight also has fascinating lore, and the KZbinr mossbag has a ton of videos explaining it that are also super entertaining.

I kinda want to comment about the whole pakkoyan and vueko thing that I firmly think that they don’t really necessarily have some kind of romance between them but a one-sided. What makes me think about that is the fact when vueko started thinking back about the memories before turning into narehate, pakkoyan never seemingly appeared in those memories. I’m pretty sure if they were actually girlfriends, vueko would’ve at least had some more important conversations or memories of her. Vueko almost seemingly barely talks to pakkoyan or even mentions her. It comes across as queerbait especially when pakkoyan is a background character we know nothing about other than that comedic sex scene.

My theory is that giant thing/artifact inside that pentagon cave might be the diving bell that bondrewd used to transport the kids down to the 5th layer safely, since its hard to imagine the bell didn't get attacked by creatures on its way down so might be a different route. My theory seems wrong tho as the thing in the cave doesn't look spherical. Edit: if made in abyss is set in the modern era (2023) would we be able to descend it easily? Yes we have drones and unmanned vehicles but the creatures in MIA can easily destroy those.

I personally view Nanachi as a girl. Because if you look at her before she was afflicted with the blessing of the abyss, as a child when Bondrewd first took her and Mitty and all of the other children, Nanachi was wearing a night shirt/dress sort of thing with no pants. Meanwhile all of the other boys were wearing pants or shorts. Ofc nothing is confirmed, but for me it would make sense Nanachi was a girl because of that night shirt/dress and lack of pants as a human child.

I also have brainworms for this series. I have a poster of the abyss on my wall near my gaming computer. If you haven't played the Etrian Odyssey series of games and like turn-based dungeon crawler RPGs the first 3 games just re-released on steam and have a very similar feel. I recommend EO3 as none of the titles are actually linked story-wise and it's one of my favorite stories in the series (1 and 2 are rather 'light' on story due to the style of RPG EO is and have remakes for the 3DS with a full on story mode with fixed characters that changes this). They're all tales of exploring a 5-6 stratum labyrinth to discover its secrets. I do wish the author for MIA was a little less... you know... but hey. His art and storytelling are incredible. As you said it does make it a little harder to recommend to others.

Red whistles representing the dusk would make more sense to me. The dusk is the beginning of the night, just like the red whistles are the beginning of a raider's life descending into the abyss. And the dusk is red and the dawn isn't. And the idea that the beginner whistles represent the same thing as bondrewd's goal and reg's destiny or whatever feels weird.

Ramble time. I just have a feel that Nanachi’s blessing in some way reflects a wish for them. Since they were pushed away for their repulsive smell and whatnot from digging through trash. Wanting to be more approachable to others and maybe more for Mitty to smell good? maybe a light wish? I like that the official perfume for Nanachi was said to smell like a candy that resembles cotton candy. Anyways, I guess to be more approachable in a way. I also feel like gears maiden is somewhat mixed in with the Made in Abyss universe..

the game tho not sure if its canon, states that 10 meters is the height at which the curse begins to affect the diver. I believe in season 2 it is also stated the height at which the strains affect divers also. The anime despite being canon has implications where riko is affected by the strains of ascent almost immediately probably due to them trying to create conflict and interest in the show vs in the manga where its not shown how far she climbs before being affected.

It is so interesting... The last fact mentioned Reg's marks on face, and same one's showed on flashback with other same person. And then, Doni... Faputa says someone named Doni awaits Reg down below. What if message to orth village was sent by that Doni. It is also interesting with "souls transfer" theory, what if the seventh layer with ring (same as dark Reg form), refers to Reg and he came from that layer. What if flashback on level 2 (when Reg.exe didn't answered after first light shot) in which Reg saw Lisa was that other unit that looks like Reg (theory with soul transfer would fit to that). Since Riko is just a human after all, she can't get out of the abyss anymore without dying, what if in the end the whole made in abyss was a story about a man transferred into a boy's robot body and finding friend's daughter to later uncover secrets about her mother without any way to go back... So interesting, I really would like to see more of made in abyss content (also author is not a wierdo, he is just misunderstood genius of such a great work) Sorry for my english if you cant read

The newest arc is SO interesting and the art is gorgeous! I think you'll really enjoy it! Nishagora, the catgirl I mentioned (though I think she has horns instead of ears and just sorta looks like a cat) is SUCH a ton of fun! She's kinda dumb and feels like a rough and tumble big sister and it's all delightful.

This series is very deep in how interesting and how such a mine of lore it is. It was my first ever series I've done a theory about, it was on an amino community and it got some attention at the time (was about questioning reg's identity). However later I realised that the 'community' was not really kind. I figured it would be a waste to make an effort in trying to do more in such place and left amino entirely. Later after some years, I remembered I made that and wanted to know what theory I did make (I don't have much memory in general so I could not remember what I thought at the time). Sadly the 'community' did disappear, which for me it was disheartening. I remembered I put a lot of effort on that, and given it was my first ever theory, lossing access to it made me sad.

I don't know how to use way back machine but even if I used it maybe I would need to check many communities I think. cave story!! MIA's inspirations are pretty evident when compared to cave story! The robotic characters quote and curly brace (you play as quote) bear a resemblance to reg and riko (...or more the other way round haha) the game's story isn't nearly as dark as MIA but it does talk about impending genocide (yay!) also there are fluffy, rabbit-like creatures in made in abyss called mimiga that nanachi may have taken inspiration from... and a few of those go through some pretty saddening situations like nanachi anyway play cave story, it's free :D

Ive also always wonderd about the small hint in the story with nanachis friend and her song of the tortises, it somehow oddly hints of people somehow escaping the deeper levels along with thier parents and others i do truly wonder how people are able to easily traverse upwards it seems. i hope they dont take out the deadly curse or loop hole it i always loved how they were able to incorperate it and never really forgot about it when it came time to it.

​@@darkvioletcloud yeah this really pulled me back into how i need to watch the show again great video, i got some sources and on my way to start re-reading it again (my fault). the information of the book now seems that much more interesting along with the inclusion of the priestes and her followers as well which possibly could be at play. it seems it more so could have been in a similar sense when bonedrewd tried to with nanachi with some second hand source tethering back info. so it could be the priestess herself or maybe her along with the help of followers. As for traversal thier are a few hints of that possibility but overall nothing loophole like so that does make me at ease for now

Based on his other male and female designs, it makes more sense for nanachi to be born male. But it doesn't matter, he's been clear that he wants them to stay agender for marketing reasons before on Twitter.

Something I'm surprised you didn't bring up is how there are 5 levels of value (shii, kuu, gutsu, mei, haku) that repeat in themes with the cave raiders. 5 colours of whistle with the last one (haku) being rare and special, 5 levels of relic with the last one being rare and special, 5 strains of ascension, with the last one being total loss of humanity. He's definitely hammering home this idea of 5 tiers of value.

@@darkvioletcloud please do! It's not my theory, it's been circulating around reddit/discord for a few years now I think, but it's one of the things I find particularly interesting! Especially with how it all relates to exchanges with the abyss. Like how in order to ascend you need to sacrifice something to the abyss, and going down past the fifth layer requires a full sacrifice of haku (the white whistle). In the village, value and exchange is super important as well. Imo I view the entire village as a mini, self contained abyss, at least metaphorically, and I think we can look at it for hints at what's to come.
