Have you ever been on a high ledge, like a building or cliff, and had that one horrifying thought: "what if i jumped?" At first, i thought i needed help, but it turns out it's not too uncommon. The term used to describe this phenomenon is "call of the void", and I couldn't think of a more accurate way to describe it. It feels like death itself is calling to me, and i have to resist that temptation, because i know what awaits me at the bottom. That is what i imagine the abyss to be for those who are near it. A death trap so obvious that no one would dare enter, right? But they do. Time and time again, and they die. They always do. But they likely only die with one regret: "i wish i could've seen what was at the bottom." Even on death's door, they want to go further down into the very pit that killed them in the first place.

I don't think that urge is neccesarily a dark urge at all but more curiosity. After all, at some point, our ancestors were in positions to do things that seemed to be certain death or cause certain illness and survived because of it. That urge to explore was selected for, so even if we know something would be death now, we are still curious. Somewhere in our wiring we're genetically predisposed to ask, "what if?"

Re-watching this video, I'm increasingly of the view that the Abyss is some kind of civilisation-devouring pitcher plant. There's a 2000 year cycle and Bondrewd understands this and wants civilisation to survive the cyclical apocalypse. He wants to be the Lord of the Dawn - the sunrise after the dark night of the Abyss' feeding. The praying skeletons are the survivors of the last civilisation it ate. And every 2000 years it adds a layer. Orth is next. Truly, this is cosmic horror done right.

Y'know, I generally avoid "theory" stuff with series like this, because I don't think they tend to add much and often feel a bit self-indulgent, but this one? I like this one. It doesn't overexplain what's going on, it's in keeping with the story's themes and tone, and it goes off of what's in the text without being unimaginative or overly literal. I respect that.

There is always only one answer for why people explore. Why humans, out of all creatures, are driven to seek out the most dangerous and wild places in the world, and to put themselves in peril just to see what happens when they take one more step. Why the unknown reaches of space, the depths of the ocean, or the place just beyond the horizon are so alluring that even those who can't physically go there want to know what exists in that place. The reason is: because it's there.

I would argue that we do crazy adventure shit not only just because we can, but because living an existence without knowing what it means is more terrifying than a horrible death. We searched the frontiers of the world trying to find ourselves in them, and when we took over the land we began looking to the stars. Where do we come from? What's out there? And most importantly...why? The pain of not knowing *why* is so much worse than the pain of death. The Abyss is just a physical manifestation of how that crazed search for meaning can *literally* torture you, turn you into a monster, drive you mad, and finally eat you alive.

I think that what the Abyss eats is not the bodies of the raiders, but their "souls." It's not a "living" creature, in the conventional sense. It's simply anchored to a physical place, and it perhaps is expressed partly in the forcefield. The physical pit itself is just part of the bait mechanism, the antlion's hole or pitcher plant's funnel that allows prey to slide downwards towards the place that eats them, drawing them deeper while making return increasingly impossible. But it's not just that. It's more than just a predator, it's a gardener. On the large scale, it fosters civilizations around its mouth, to birth the individuals who will enter its body, and then every 2,000 years it undergoes an upheaval and swallows them entirely. On the individual level, it cultivates the strong-willed, empowers them, has them make bonds and connections that allow them to make their way deeper than others, and then when they are fully ripened with personal strength, human connection, love, and the admiration of others, it harvests all that it has grown. The Abyss doesn't care that Lyza and Ozen's bonds allowed the two to carry the baby Riko out of the pit alive. It's patient. It knows that all three will come down to its doorstep in due time, because what's a decade or so to something that's quite possibly as old as human civilization itself?

I just had a thought. This is probably going to include spoilers for people who have only watched We know that it seems like the abyss is getting close to making another layer again, since it seems like it follows some pattern. It appears somewhere in the world, people explore it, bringing relics up, and then it drags everything on the lip down into it, forming a layer. This seems to happen around every 2000 years, likely around the point where the birthday disease starts. What if the cause is not necessarily the time, but the relics that have been brought out of the abyss. The relics from deeper in the abyss are usually more powerful than the ones from the very top. Likely in large part from the strength of the curse. Maybe bringing these relics up and out of the abyss brings part of the abyss with it, and once enough of the abyss's power is brought outside it can pull the entire area inside of it.

@terra202094 жыл бұрын
Considering how nanachi described the abyss and the curse this seems probable, and later on in the manga we learn a lot more some of the lower residents came to be. The relics that are brought up may still have the power of the abyss with them, and the power of the abyss will surely affect people. One of the effects may be the sickness thats kills young children, we see one of the kids taken outside of the island and he got instantlu better, as if the abyss couldnt efect him no more.
@astronauteer12152 жыл бұрын
What if there's someone with space tecgnology/high technology who can just send robots to do the exploration in the abyss? To add this in your theory, it's immpossible to explore the abyss even if you have spacer technology since you'll just die because of the relics your taking from the abyss. And controling robots can be a pain in the ass if the abyss blocks out radio signals to control the robots and just use cords instead which is a very hard option that can waste loads of resources since the abyss is very deep and some creatures can just cut the cords off or even destroy the robots.
@thealbianempire96842 жыл бұрын
I know I'm over a year late to the conversation but to add on to this. We know that the relics also have wish or desire fulfilling abilities to them and get stronger the deeper they come from. So what if when people inevitably pull stronger relics up to a place where the majority of people wish to go deeper into the abyss that's what causes the abyss to form new layers.

The abyss is horrifying, I have no idea how anyone can realistically believe that they would want to go in there if they were actually given a chance. It's only adventurous and exciting because of the socialization in that world and because of Riko's sense of wonder. If this story was told from the perspective of another character it would be totally different. The fact that we are able to see it through Riko's eyes to understand the wonder, and through Reg's eyes to understand the terror of being in the abyss is an amazing combination that makes the abyss come to life. There are many ways that stories have tried to execute on exploration into certain death as a core element of their story. Take Attack on Titan for example. But the execution itself is what makes Made in Abyss so special.

The thing is that imo manga doesn't do that good job at representing how truly insane the Abyss is and manga actually does it better by showing Riko's and Reg's struggles and training a bit more. If the manga didn't carefully explain its creatures and I just had to rely on what I see through Rico's and Reg's eyes, I would have the impression that they got as deep as they did quite easily with just one extremely unlucky accident. But then again it would also make sense that the upper layers of Abyss actually are way less dangerous than they were 1900 years ago since there has probably been quite a lot of culling and mapping done in those 1900 years. Even the border between 5th and 6th layer is safely fortified for humans. And maybe just passing through is actually relatively easy since the real danger comes from having to survive there for a long periods of time and getting out. Maybe there's even supernatural element in that. Maybe Abyss let's those on their last journey through with relatively easy testing since there's no worry of them ever getting out and spilling the beans. Maybe in the past plenty of young kids actually got into 4th or 5th layers and the red whistle rule had to be put in place because it's only then when the problems started arising because their bodies couldn't handle ascent

The first time I've played through the original Dark Souls I had this strong feeling of wonder and desire to explore and learn about everything I could, mixed with uncertainty and fear of what might lurk right behind the corner. I think it was in huge part due to its impressive vertical design and the first half of the game directing you deeper and deeper below the surface, with constantly changing, increasingly dangerous and creepy environments inhabited by a plethora of bizarre and hostile creatures. @ConvincingPeople Жыл бұрын
To put it bluntly, abusers are often also cowards. For as willing as he may be to cut ties with his own humanity to gain power or insight or novel experiences, Bondrewd is fundamentally terrified of losing control, and giving in completely to the call of the Abyss would mean relinquishing a level of control which he cannot abide. It's a really beautifully observed portrait of a deeply broken person who is frightening both because of their brokenness and because of how composed they seem in spite of it.

I feel like Made in Abyss has a direct reference to the book Annihilation in the abyss itself. A phrase that has always stayed in my mind is the one of Ozen talking that below there people don't believe in a god but instead they only believe in the Abyss, it is really interesting to think on this with the contrast of cultures with the hardest conditions in the middle of the jungle and their religions, creating this sense of first thanking for the few food and water each day instead of asking why there isn't more as they know there won't be an answer but in case there was an answer that entity has the power and won't doubt to punish them.

I usually get irritated and angry when sadness is a constant theme of a show or movie. Mostly because its exploitative melodrama, but the children in this show are so pure but in such a horrifying world, its the situation that evokes the sadness. Made in Abyss brought out so many emotions inside that i never knew existed inside the abyss of my soul.
@MrMuel12054 жыл бұрын
I think the way this anime balances beauty and horror so perfectly is part of its power. Were it simply grimdark the lure of the abyss wouldn’t be sold to the audience, but making the setting so beautiful and intriguing means the audience and the characters are invested at once in the same goal. And sharing that goal with the characters, it becomes easier to comprehend why they would endure such horror in their quest.

To those who have watched the anime, there is also a Made in Abyss movie called "Made in Abyss: Dawn of the Deep Soul", which directly follows the events of the anime and covers the Bondrewd arc. Season 2 of the anime will presumably come after the movie, so you should watch before season 2 when it comes out. (There are also two other movies that recap the events of the anime). In regards to the movie, it is exceptional. The animation and soundtrack are amazing, on top of an absolute banger of a story arc, which tugs at your heart in all sorts of ways. I suspect that Reg is some attempt (a successful one imo) by either the original inhabitants of the abyss, or someone familiar with their knowledge, to create the ideal abyss traversing humanoid. Reg is essentially the perfect android; the thing that creepy futurist villains always strive for. His synthetic body perfectly replicates the functionality of a real organic organism, and perfectly replicated human thought and emotions, but does not seem to _need_ food, water, or oxygen to function. He is also stronger, faster, and more durable than regular humans and has grappling arms. And of course, most importantly, he’s immune to the effects of the abyss. He has basically all the advantages of being human without any of the disadvantages. It’s possible he might even have the brain of an actual child inside him (which would make him a cyborg) which could explain why he doesn’t even see himself as a robot. My only question/concern is why design an android with fully functioning “anatomy” if he doesn’t seem to have a way to actually grow. Is his consciousness supposed to be transferred to older bodies as he ages, or is there some kind of mechanisms for him to actually age physically somewhere deeper in the abyss? How would an android even reproduce, especially if they are perpetually a child? I am curious and a bit worried to find out the true nature and origin of Reg.

I am really hyped for the movie. We will dive into the true world of white whistles, and start to realize how terrifying they actually are. We saw a glimpse of their power with Ozen, but only a fraction of what it actually means to be one. That its not simple power that sets them apart of black whistles or even the monsters of the abyss. What makes a white whistle unique is that they transcended humanity, they have overcome what others cling onto. In fact, as we shall see: The last step to achieve the rank of a white whistle is to let go of your innocence. A fate that all have to take who are willing to dive beyond the 5th layer. For this is the realm where humanity ends. A sea of corpses.

It would be the creepiest if it turns out that the Abyss litterally swallows whole civilisations, landmarks and people. Imagine that- at first there was no Abyss, but then the place that now would be the bottomest bottom just was sucked into the ground, and another civilisation built their city around it, back when it just was a valley. Then the next and the next civilisation was swallowed. Which in cosmic sense means- the town that is above the Abyss now might become the next layer 1 of Abyss while current level 1 will become level 2 and a next civilization will build over it, intrigued by what killed their predecessors

I fell in love with show by the end of the first episode, when Rico introduces the Abyss to Reg and to us. There is a line on the OP song that encapsulates this show: "ima kotae ga mitsukaru nara zenbu nakushite mo ii " It says: if I can find the answer, I don't mind sacrificing everything I feel a bit of envy of characters that know themselves so well, they can leave all behind, and sacrifice themselves so readily for the sake of chasing their goal
@vb20504 жыл бұрын
The abyss, however fictional or not, exists in a profound way. It represents something that everyone longs for, that everyone craves above all else. Meaning It is in some sense a monument entirely dedicated to Meaning. It, to the people of Orth, is the answer to the question "What was I born to do? To accomplish? What was it all for?" Such monuments are an extremely valuable resource, one that the world outside Made in Abyss is in very short supply. That is why we love the show because some part of our subconscious mind empathically attach ourselves to the main cast of the show, and through them, we are able to witness a watered-down version of the Abyss. To witness that monument towards Meaning. Then once the show ends, and we lose that empathic connection with the monument, we suddenly realize that in our real lives, we don't have a monument to throw ourselves onto. And so, when the show ends, this "fictional" monument remains somewhat intact and we can't help ourselves but be drawn inward, down into the Abyss
@AaronMetallion Жыл бұрын
I haven't watched S2 yet, I like to prolong my favorite shows to savor it later. But this video served as the perfect refresher. I remember when I watched Made in Abyss, I was thinking about the moral / philosophical lesson in all the characters had to endure. And I felt a few things: 1. “Yet, even amidst the hatred and carnage, life is still worth living. It is possible for wonderful encounters and beautiful things to exist.” ― Hayao Miyazaki. I hiked at the Himalayas in Nepal last year, and it was exhausting and difficult. As you go higher, you actually get "curses", first altitude sickness from the drop of oxygen, and then it gets colder, and then on another layer the water is actually frozen. But if you endure it, there is so much beauty I cannot even put into words. You turn around a corner, and suddenly the view opens up and fills you with immense awe. It was a different world, like a video game... And I understand why climbers who actually go up the 'peaks' risk their lives for it. 1/3 people never come back, but the 2/3 that come back, return completely different. Their perspectives and priorities are in a totally difference place from the average person. When you're at that height, the clouds below you, the view of the millions of stars makes everything feel small. It is permanently perspective altering. 2. Our planets have a long history of large beasts and predators of every form, mechanizations of carnage that once walked this same world, sharks 4x the size, giant insects, theropods / dinosaurs, parasites, fungi and venomous creatures that would kill you. We're safe, in front of our computers right now, in locked homes. I'm even a vegan - because I can be, being as I can walk into a grocery and buy 100s of ingredients. I haven't had to fight for survival a day in my life. But Made in Abyss is the true hominid experience. The reward of surviving and exploring our world, at the risk of tragedy. What happened to the Titan submarine recently was a tragedy, but we all have that yearning to explore the unexplored, to perhaps witness a small part of the cosmos in our lifetimes. And every iteration of progress is paid in "lives", be it failed auto safety, planes, submarines, surgeries. 3. And if you watched the movie, the ethics / morality of Bondrewd is exactly like animal lab scientists / animal testing labs. If you've watched any footage from labs, it's just as brutal and what animals endure on a daily basis. Nazi experiments that were carried out on humans for the "good of mankind" and currently employed in a lot of modern medicine, transitioned to animals solely at some point -- an estimated 115 million + animals each year. While Bondrewd seems to have a fictional level of cruelty in the name of science, this is the average scientist at animal testing research labs. I spent time thinking about the above, because to me, I didn't feel like the show was being unnecessarily cruel for the sake of being cruel. I felt like a lot of those aspects felt grounded in reality, and I wanted to articulate why precisely. There's so many anime I watched and enjoyed in the moment, but they end up being very forgettable. Made in Abyss especially the movie, stuck in my memory since the day I watched it. It is one of the most original fantasy shows ever. No elves, cat girls, gnomes, dwarves, dragons, and Tolken / LotR / WoW cliches. To me (especially artistically as a Game Artist), it is certainly a masterpiece. (Also P.s. very surprised to see Figurama, my mom worked for them, and they do make some of the most insane figures (or hire some of the most insane talent). It's based in Kuwait, Middle East where I grew up. They had a really crazy Attack on Titan diorama at my moms office. Difficult country to live in, but my parents still live and work there.)

"Was down there up here at some point?" In regard to the ship stuck, the Abyss sea we know of is the one on the 5th layer, where Idofront is... and Bondrewd's whole "for the next 2000 years" stick, of course, heavily implies that civilisations got swallowed. Now, the hole has been (re)discovered 1900 years ago. The clock is ticking.

I just remember when she was about to have her arm amputated and that was the most I’ve ever been on edge in an anime in a while. Usually you know something is going to happen in the mc’s favor, but this anime makes you throw all hope out the window at times lol

One thing that you didn't mention (and seeing as you are only reading the manga) is the fact that the more down this kids go, the more your realize, death is actually fuckin great and you are incredibly lucky if anything down there just kills you. Made in Abyss was the first piece of media to show me the true horror that is suffering eternally. The Abyss doesn't want to just kill you, it wants to morph you into something beyond humanity and even monstrosity, something that has suffered for so long it can not even comprehend what suffering is anymore. That's why I wonder.. what the hell is awaiting this kids at the bottom?

I don't think anything could possibly prepare anyone for the abyss of bereft hopelessness this anime leaves you with, once it's finished chipping away at you.

When you said that the abyss itsel may be alive i felt the compulsion to point out how much Uncle's Lovecraft fun murderhole actually looks like a Stars War's Sarlaak

I gotta say, the ending of this video surprised and impressed me. You made your point artfully and let it stand, with only that gorgeous music to punctuate it. Nicely done.

This anime is basically a horror fantasy, and I'm not the type that likes horror. But this anime uses horror that really serves the premise of the story so well that in fact, I consider this one of the greatest anime of all time. A must watch!

I really want more Made in Abyss anime. Some things, like Yakusoku no Neverland, are great as manga... but Made in Abyss is kinda hard to read.

I absolutely feel that inviting tug to the Abyss. Hell, Made in Abyss was the first show in years that's made me wish that I were in that universe, so I could dive down and explore the wonder and horrors of the place. Once the first season was over it left me sullen, the show was amazing, but I didn't want to leave it or its world. Funnily enough, it actually even made me a bit giddy when I found a video comparing Cave Raiders with scuba divers, being one myself. Even now, years later, if I had a chance to leave everything here behind to see the Abyss myself, I'd still take it. I realize this all might make me sound a bit unhealthy, but seriously, how could you resist such an awe-inspiring, wonderful death trap?

When it comes to lovecraftian horror I would never say I want to be there in that world, but with this I would have to go into the abyss, I'd probly die horribly, but I'm pretty sure I'd do it

Man, I'm so happy you made another video about this show! after your first video I just thought that you had not thought so highly about the series as a whole and I'm so happy that either changed or I had gotten it wrong xD
