Made In Japan is the GOAT live album. Technique has gotten so insane for guitarists these days that it seems they've forgotten how to have a unique style. What I mean by that is there are incredible players out there that could shred anyone but they all sound the same. Back in the day guitarists like Blackmore, Iommi, Page, Beck, McLaughlin, Santana, Hendrix,.... They all had unique individual styles that could be recognized right away after a note or two. These days these KZbin elite shredders for example pretty much sound all the same imo.

I'm not convinced about the argument that there are thousands of guitarists around today who could play what Blackmore was playing in 1972, if they were given the same technology Blackmore was using here, with a Srat using very little distortion or sustain, and only a treble-booster on his signal chain into nearly 300 watts of amplification. I think you would find out very quickly who could really play cleanly, or not. And even if it's possible to replicate it now, it's surely a lot harder to improvise something like that at that tempo with all the changes in phrasing Blackmore includes.

Hi Nick, Hi Alexia..Thank you so much for reacting to Child in Time from Made in Japan. I was 13 in 1970 when the In Rock album was released...and I was blown away by all the tracks ...but this track topped the lot. The guitar solo by Ritchie on the studio version was brilliant...but when I heard this version in 1972. my ears literally fell off 😂 ... absolutely stunning. What a song, what a message., what a band . I was fortunate to be in my teens when I heard all this great music from many brilliant bands . I have so many favourites...Cream. Led Zeppelin, Sabbath. Uriah Heep. King Crimson. Yes . Genesis...to name a few but Deep Purple...is right at the top table. Looking forward to your next reaction. Take care, stay safe. Peace and love from Liverpool UK 👍✌️🤘☮️

Back then it was so amazing when rock groups started using philharmonic orchestras like Procol Harum for example. This was a beauty and still is- Deep Purple and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in Royal Albert Hall, London. It`s a pearl - don`t miss it.

Best vocal performance ever imo. Nobody can sing the way Ian Gillian did back then. He's always been my favorite vocalist & Ritchie Blackmore is my favorite guitarist. The rest of the band are all in top ten at their given instruments. It's also my favorite album by Deep Purple. As you said Nick, a masterpiece. You can see them performing this, not the Made In Japan version but another live performance from 1970 I think it is. I've seen a lot of reactors do this video & never even heard of the song & are just blown away by it. I loved it guys

You are absolutely correct about seeing these people in the 70's, and I imagine even more so, the handfull of players around the time Clapton, Beck and Hendrix were getting started in the 60's. I played in a local band, and the solo to Since I've Been Loving You was just so challening to us, let alone this Child in Time solo. But.......there was one guy at the school who was so talented that he could play those solos, he knew by ear after one or two listens how to play them, and had the technique to do so. As you mentioned with respect to KZbin players, he could play them, but not write those iconic parts. In the end, despite prodigous ability, he did not get into any successful band, he became a music teacher. The first guitar hero I saw live was Rory Gallagher, at a small venue. He set the standard for me, it was absolutely tremendous. Van Halen was technically better. But I am not interested in what he has to say with the guitar. Rory has much more genuine heart in his playing. So does Gary Moore for that matter. Perhaps, today, Unfortunately, never got to see Purple or Rainbow.

As someone whose first album was Fireball and then I bought In Rock, Made in Japan is probably the best live album ever made. Am I biased, yup, but I love it. Everyone is on fire. I'm one of those who was never keen on Ritchie (even though I saw him in Rainbow) but he powers through this. But every other member of the band is brilliant: Jon Lord on his Hammond, Ian Paice's drums are so on point together with Roger's bass. Then Ian Gillan's vocals soar over the top. He (Gillan) and Roger Glover usually wrote the lyrics for all Deep Purple MkII even though the songs were credited to all the band.

Hi guys, I was still at school when this came out and I remember buying it and getting home to play for the first time. It was the first live rock album I ever heard and it was stunning. I played both vinyl records in one sitting. I must have been high for weeks. It was on the small Dansette record player we had, that everyone in our house used . It wasn't in stereo. When I did get a stereo I was blown away ..again ! by this incredible album. Then getting my proper hi-fi system with huge speakers 2 & 1/2 foot tall ...and this is still the 70's. I was in Heaven. The sound quality ...and ....a headphone socket !!! Woohoo I got my first headphones and Made in Japan took on another level. This live album still packs a punch today. It is so tight with every musician at the top of their game. I still have the vinyl and later I bought the cd ...and then the remastered cd with extra tracks [ The black cover instead of gold ] Ian Gillan's vocals and those screams are amazing. When I listened to "Strange Kind of Woman" on the small record player, ...in mono... I could not tell the difference between Gillan's voice and Blackmore's guitar. In the 70's it was never Designer clothes that got you noticed...it was what album you carried under your arm on your way to friends houses....This was like a beacon ! Strangers saying hi and oh wow Made in Japan !!! .... The last time I got that noticed was when I was carrying, T.Rex "The Slider" ...That was 'the' album to own !!! .....Now today it's a case of showing the top part of Calvin Klein underwear with jeans halfway down your behind ! Oh how times have changed. Lol Byee Jim X

There were multiple wars in the US, most notably the War of 1812, in which the British captured Washing DC abd burned the White House and Capitol Buildings. The War of 1812 was fought by the United States and its allies against the United Kingdom and its allies in North America. It began when the United States declared war on Britain on 18 June 1812. Although peace terms were agreed upon in the December 1814 Treaty of Ghent, the war did not officially end until the peace treaty was ratified by the United States Congress on 17 February 1815.

Many a weekend back in 70-71 my friends and I would venture from Long Island to Greenwood Lake NY about a 2 hour drive to a club called Mother's. Either going or coming we always played the Deep Purple in Rock 8 track. Great album and Child in Time an all time favorite. I finally got to see them in Bridgeport CT in1972. Ian Gillan has to be one of the great vocalists in rock history. I would like to suggest that you listen to another great and underappreciated band in this same time frame. Uriah Heep, a band I saw twice that year. A lot of similarities between the two. I guarantee David Byron's vocals will impress you especially on two songs (July Morning & Salisbury).

Bought this "vinyl" the day it came out! Recorded it onto cassette for the car, then recorded another one several months later - for obvious reasons! Having lived through the music of the 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s, etc, those early 70s were the absolute pinnacle for music - and such wonderful times too. I really feel blessed and so lucky with having experienced all of this, just hope similar times reappear soon for the next generations! Fantastic reaction and amazed to see Lex leading the way! This MK II version of Deep Purple was incredible and they are still influencing bands today. The drummer of Band-Maid, Akane Hirose, credits Deep Purple's drummer, Ian Paice, as one of her main influences and the band as one of her favorites. The organ that Jon Lord is playing is a Hammond. The B3 and C3 models were a staple of hard rock bands from that era and the Hammond sound is still used today but usually in a synthesized form rather than having to pack around a heavy Hammond and keep all of the glass vacuum tubes, complex components, moving parts, and wiring in working order. There is no reason that you have to imagine seeing this. You should check out the live video of this song from 1972. There is another version from 1970 that is also good.

Technically, there are still not many, if any, who could do the range that Blackmore did on the main solo, especially given the technology and, let's remember, despite being mostly jammed, not a lost note.

Gillan is quoted as saying that the song was created "using the Cold War as the theme", adding "the words came easily because we were all aware of the nuclear threat looming over us at what was probably the height of the Cold War." Interesting point about what it was like listening to this in context at the time. Yes, our minds were blown, they still are. Modern guitarists have basically techniqued all the life out of what they do. It can leave you a bit cold.

Very interesting to hear your thoughts about the perception of this kind of music back in 72- you were SPOT ON: I was 12 and bored with the soft pop on the singles chart and I asked some of my cooler friends cause it seemed they listened to a different newer kind of music. “Try the album charts” was the answer. So I randomly picked two titles: Paranoid with Black Sabbath and Made in Japan by Deep Purple. Without any prelistening I put them on my xmas wish list. Got them both aaaand- as you so rightfully imagine “Got blown away!!!” I just couldnt believe what I was hearing. This was something never heard before. Made in Japan was played constantly for months. And to this day remains the album I still listen to on a regular basis. And I still get mesmerized-every time! What a classic 🫠

Yes, It was a battle with my parents! Absolutely as you say - regarding the age difference. My parents were very good, but when it came to music they had problems coming to terms with the Beatles and the Stones! Let alone the more noisy and outrageous later bands. They were into Bing Crosby, Sinatra, and some god awful cheesy orchistrated music. Tom Jones, Englebert Humperdink, Shirley Bassey, were viewed as ok modern entertainment. The main pop music program was Top of the Pops, so I did get to watch it, but they complained frequently, about who was on - what they looked and sounded like. The band that really got them was Jethro Tull, with the mad act of Ian Anderson. Fortunately, the best music program - The Old Grey Whistle Test, which had a lot of the more album oriented bands on it, was on later when they had gone to bed, and I could watch it in peace. One of the few rock songs of the 70's they got onboard with was Bohemian Rhapsody. I had a tape recorder, and a record player, both had speakers, no headphones, I had an after school job, so had money to buy records, so they were treated to a lot of the finest rock if they came near my room!

DATA IMPORTANTE.

Blackmore was blessed that Night and nobody will or can play another solo like this, becaus it is not shredding. He takes you on a journey. Each line has a melody, is played impeccably . LIVE ON THE SPOT. There are many recordings of him playing CIT, but he never played it the same way. I know a guitarist who can play stuff like this (albeit more recent because he is much younger than me) all day long but he could never invent it, he cannot innovate much around. Like most great bands even now, the live performances are often different on each occasion. No idea how much of Deep Purple music was written down, and how often they played to a score. Watching Jon Lord play live there seem to be way too many notes to ever have been written down. All those internet 10 year olds playing note perfect copies of some work of genius and crushing the soul out of it. It ain't art.
