The Unholy Trinity: as they were called. Sabbath, Zeppelin and Purple. In the US, Sabbath and Ozzy are adored, Zeppelin were (to be fair) sexy and diverse. Purple, my band. were just the best live act you'd ever see. And most of they're albums are golden. Sabbath and Zeppelin are superb, but there is only one Purple. (I may be very biased)

This song is from Deep Purple In Rock, which was followed by Fireball, then Machinehead. In the Copenhagen show you reacted to, they were touring Fireball and adding Machinehead songs that weren’t yet released. Others have suggested the live album Made In Japan , made on the Machinehead tour, which incorporates the best of all three albums.

I was 9 years old at the time, America was just ending the civil rights era and the 60's hippie movement and there was the Vietnam War going on which was on the news everyday giving us the governments take on it. Then there was songs like this (kinda like a protest to the war) and at 9 years old I grew up understanding what life was really about! My step-father just come back home from Vietnam and he gave me an album of Deep Purple called Live in Japan and my life was changed and I became a drummer and my LOVE of music began!! Gosh, now at 63 years old I miss this type of music...

Actually, Ian only recorded on the 1970 concept album. He never starred in the musical, anywhere. They wanted him for the first movie (released in 1973), but he was committed to a Deep Purple tour. Deep Purple at the time was huge. It is reported that he told the movie producers that he would only consider the role if the producers paid Deep Purple and all their staff for their lost revenue. This wasn't possible, so they found Ted Neely to do the role. Ted continued by playing the role on stage. If you want to hear Ian in the role, look for "1970 Gethsemane". It is a much simpler song than Child in Time, so some people prefer it. It is more accessible. To hear Ian Gillan and guitarist Ritchie Blackmore trade notes, listen to a live version of "Strange kind of Woman". To hear Ian's lower register, which is also quite amazing, look for his version of "No More Cane on the Brazos". This was either a solo or with his band called "Gillan", I can't remember. Deep Purple was the first band to meld classical with hard rock. My personal name for their style is "hard prog-rock" King Crimson is another band that did this, but they were a year or two later. When Greg Lake left King Crimson, he formed a progressive rock band with Keith Emerson and Carl Palmer. You should listen to "Karn Evil 9" by Emerson Lake and Palmer to hear quintessential progressive rock. Like Jon Lord of Deep Purple, Keith Emerson had a very strong classical keyboard background. BTW, Ian Gillan had a male family member (maybe an uncle) who was an opera singer. As a (not very accomplished) singer myself, I have always been amazed by his skills. His voice did change during his time away from Purple and became more nasal. I seem to remember something about a tonsillectomy or other throat surgery, so maybe that was the reason. But I don't know. He still has a decent voice -- not many hard rock singers can say that when they are almost 80 years old. I was lucky enough to see Deep Purple Mark II (the line up from 1969 through 1973, what you see here) twice. I saw "Gillan" twice also. Never saw "Rainbow". I saw "Whitesnake" practice for a tour. I just happened to stay in their hotel and someone invited me to watch. I think that is it for me re: bands associated with Deep Purple.

Since this was a live recording in a BBC studio during a period when sound quality wasn't great, the audience was told not to move or make sound. At least, this is what some audience members have reported. But still, this was very avant garde for the time, so some probably didn't get it. In the actual Deep Purple concerts I saw from 1971 to 1973, the audience was very into it. Deep Purple could just jam and it sounded great.
