How can it be that a person who was 15 or 16 when this album was released is hearing it for the first time? I never had it. Nobody I knew ever had it. High school, serving in the Navy, having roommates through the rest of the 70s, girlfriends etc...and none of them had this album. So, first listen 50+ years after release!

@@ninoorjon I lived in L.A. back then. Deep Purple weren't a band anyone I knew paid attention to. They had a hit with Hush in '68 and then disappeared off the radar. By the time they hit with Smoke On The Water I was in Asia. Japan mostly. Didn't hear them there either.

My #1 Studio Album. When i put In Rock on my GE Wildcat Stereo in 1970 and Speed King came blaring out of the speakers i was shocked as my parent's were shocked. I never looked back. I was a huge Deep Purple, Black Sabbath and Uriaheep fan. The talent of Deep Purple and Uriaheep was off the charts.

Through my long term friendship with Mark Forster, Black Sabbath's tour director, I was able to meet Ritchie a few times between 1978 and 1985. When considering all aspects of what a guitarist embodies, I consider him the best of all time. In Rock was one of, if not the most important, album in the crossroads of musical history.

The original album has seven songs and ends with "Hard Lovin' Man". The rest are bonus tracks on the remastered "25th Anniversary Edition" (remixed by bass player Roger Glover by the way). "Black Night" was released as a single and never appeared on any official album release, besides here and lots compilation albums and also as an encore on the "Made In Japan" remaster and the "Live In Japan" box that contains all three nights in Osaka and Tokyo from which "Made In Japan" was distilled. The difference between the original single and this here track is that Glover left the song running beyond the single's fade-out. I'm always happy to see you react because it's such a pleasure to watch your enthusiasm and real enjoyment of the music. See you around chickadee.

This is in many ways a transitional album for Deep Purple. Jon Lord (organ) acted as the primary creative director of the band before this (culminating with his Concerto for Group and Orchestra), but In Rock marked the beginning of Ritchie Blackmore's ascendancy. In 1974, when the pendulum began to swing back toward Lord (with the arrival of Glenn Hughes in the band, a natural writing partner for Lord), Blackmore saw it was no longer his band, so he left to start Rainbow.

I love Hard Lovin' Man, it'd my favorite, the bass playing is crazy on it. The original album was a 7 track album and Black Night was a single that they put on your version along with alt takes and etc. But Hard Lovin' Man was the original closer iirc.

Purple were influenced mainly by US band Vanilla Fudge which predates Zepp’ . Cream, the Yardbirds and Jeff Beck’s work (later with Rod Stewart) were the jumping off point for Zeppelin (and all the black blues players they “borrowed” from) Jeff Beck feels that Page/Zeppelin enjoyed the fruits of what he developed and couldn’t manifest due to illness/injury/circumstances. Purple admired Led Zeppelin’s debut album and the band as players. Purple had chart success in America in parallel with Zepp with an organ heavy version of Hush by Joe South which went to No 5. No band but Purple could have recorded “Concerto for group and orchestra” and “DP in Rock” within a few months of each other in 1969. No one could play electric guitar like Ritchie Blackmore in ‘69. The solo on Child in Time is possibly his best studio solo. Great drive, precision, dynamics, controlled mayhem. Speed King gets my vote for the best hard rock intro … ever 😀

kira, before I listen here...please keep in mind the possibility of a full-album reaction to Purple's "Burn", (1974) the first post-Ian GIllan album. It features David Coverdale and Glenn Hughes on vocals and it's one of Ritchie's top 2 or 3 albums of his life. It's the first album I ever bought and it's a very good one, I think you'd dig it.

Oh my got this when I was 11 and have probably not listened to it since I was 13. But those were 2 glorious years of rocking out. The organs are iconic and Ian was an amazing rock singer.

First ever track I heard by Deep Purple was "Black Night" I was a teenager. The music charts was mostly pop music in the late 60's then along comes this. I bought it on a single 7" vinyl. I still have it. Deep Purple In Rock didn't have that track on here originally. It was a massive hit here in England. This album is a classic. As for "Child In Time" the live version on "Made In Japan" blows this version out of the water, and is among the greatest live albums ever made. The track "Strange Kind of Woman" has Ian Gillan & Richie Blackmore immitating each other to the point of, you cannot tell who is who ? ...Guitar or vocals ? ... [ Play in Mono and it's impossible ] ... If you listen to "Child in Time" ... wait ...after it's finished ... Ian's scream will leave you breathless !!!! ... Made in Japan also has a drum solo and Ian Paice is amazing throughout !

Hi Kira, glad to see you back. You had us worried for a while. 😂. If you like funky Deep Purple, check out their 1974 album Stormbringer. It’s an absolute masterpiece of an album. British hard rock fused with American style Funk and soul. I don’t think you’ll be disappointed.

You nailed it on the head when you mentioned Iron Maiden getting some influence here. Singer Bruce Dickinson said that his 3 biggest early influences for his style are Ian Gillan (Deep Purple), Ian Anderson (Jethro Tull) and Arthur Brown (The Crazy World of Arthur Brown/Arthur Brown's Kingdom Come). Bruce Dickinson has recorded a cover of "Black Night" and performed it live with his band outside of Iron Maiden. I actually heard his cover before hearing the original. It was part of what made me start listening to Purple.

I don't much like the "duelling" interpretation given to things like the guitar-and-organ part of Speed King, maybe mainly because it rings false to me (and also because applying it to every "conversation" - more like it - between instruments levels out the possibilities, which is boring). I don't know if this is more correct, but in Speed King you could choose to hear it as something like the guitar saying, "Great party, this!", and the organ replying, "Yes! Isn't it? Would you like another Pangalactic Gargleblaster?", "Hell, yeah!!!" ... and so on. There are other options besides endless, dreary, drooling dueling. That's the point. Doesn't even have to be a "conversation"; it could be something like acrobatics. The guitar fingers flick the song back through the air to the organ, and it does somersaults on the way.

I thought Kira would like Speed King. Jon Lord was the master of the overdriven Hammond organ, and in my opinion it made their sound so distinctive. Deep Purple In Rock and Machine Head are still two of my favourite albums 50 years or so after their release.

For me, Hard Lovin' Man is a top 3 track on the album. It is essentially the sex act put to music, and introduces the "gallup" rhythm which became so prominent in 80s metal. This is such a great album, particularly for 1970! It DEFINES and is the official start of "hard rock". Zeppelin and Sabbath touched upon it in 1969, and certainly inspired Deep Purple, but In Rock solidified the genre and gave it direction. Kira, the next Deep Purple album you should react to has to be Made In Japan, which in my view is the greatest live rock album of all time. Simply astounding stuff!

Their second album. "BOOK OF TALISAM" the whole album rocks. I've seen DP 5 times and only one time did they not outperform the other bands. URIAH HEEP outdid them in 1972.

Really enjoyed that reaction, thanks kira. We have the same least favorite song and our favorites are basically the same. I think I like “flight of the rat“ more than you but you did say that it might grow on you. Respect how you are exploring the early history of hard rock/metal. I also really liked how you paid attention to Ian Paice, the drummer and appreciated his work. Same goes with organist Jon Lord. Kudos to your good taste!

Deep Purple Mark II that made "In Rock" (as well as the albums - 'Fireball'... 'Machine head'... 'Made in Japan' (live)... 'Who do we think we are"... 'Perfect strangers'... 'House of blue light'... 'The Battle rages on') was truly special. It's a pity they could not stay together, but guitarist Ritchie Blackmore is that kind of 'mad genius' who throws a fit if everything isn't his way... Blackmore quit twice - in 1975 and 1993. And of course, the late, great Jon Lord on organ/keyboards, the band's heart & soul. Ian Paice (drums) is such an iconic talent and the only original member of Deep Purple today... Roger Glover (bass) is also a producer for Deep Purple and lyricist... And the voice of Ian Gillan (vocals) is the lead singer of the 5 vocalists that sang for Deep Purple 🤘🤘🔥🔥

Fun fact about titles: "Flight of the rat" is a nod to the Rimsky-Korsakoff piece "Flight of the bumblebee", but just the title: the latter is an insanely fast piece of classical music. It did also inspire, title-wise and musically, Joey DeMaio's insanely fast bass solo "Sting of the bumblebee" featured on Manowar's groundbreaking "epic metal" masterpiece "Kings of metal" from 1988 (which I HIGHLY recommend, by the way). In addition, seventeen years after "Hard lovin' man", Deep Purple put a song called "Hard lovin' woman" on their 1987 album "House of blue light". That song is actually the weakest on an otherwise hugely underappreciated 80s juggernaut of an album, whose title, as you may have noticed, is from the lyrics of "Speed king" 😀 Keep up the good work - "a metal heart is hard to tear apart", as my great countrymen Hammerfall put it way back in 1997.

oh, hey, been a while. in rock is one of the albums I always wanted in vinyl but somehow never managed to get around to. thanks for reminding me xD. on another note: I've been listening to two relatively newer bands lately and would like your opinion on them. if you want to make a reaction to them, I recommend the albums "Ravenous e. h. - hubris" and "Gnome - Father of time" (For Gnome I also heavily recommend watching their music video of Wenceslas". in anyway I wish you a nice year of 2023 and many more good discoveries

When this was released in 1970 it was the loudest most aggressive album we could find. I had friends whose parents would not allow them to play it. Your point about the Funky tracks I had not thought of - you are spot on though! Black Night was recorded after a heavy session in the pub - they needed a single - so stole a riff from Ricky Nelson & added nonsensical words that sounded good but made no sense - it was their highest charting single and they still play it as an encore - though it was left off the album.

If you dig Lord's keyboard work, you gotta check out "Highway Star" from their Made in Japan album. The Lord of the Keyboard kills it, and I bet many speeding tickets were issued when this came out to drivers cruising while listening to it.

$35 for that record, eh? I was curious about how much it cost when it came out in 1970 and looked up up. $6 or $7. Taking it in the middle, $6.50, and inflating that from 1970 to 2022 (I know we're in 2023 but the calculator doesn't include this year yet), it would be $49.03. I guess you got a good deal then. That would've been like paying $4.64 in 1970.

I've always thought the line in child in time that's says not been hit oh by flying lead, should have used an expletive that rhymes with hit. Black Night was indeed the single release at the same time and NOT on the LP - that's why it's placed at the end here. Originally the complete overkill at the end of Hard Lovin Man was the finale... you literally hear Ritchie throwing his guitar around and sliding it against furniture... of course hard on the ears, but that was part of the idea at the time I think. I would definitly not miss out on Machine Head next, slightly more polished songs, and some real staples of the tock genre. And only after that do indeed listen to Made In Japan to hear how these really could be played! :D
