I was 11 years old when I heard Speed King for the first time. It was thundering from a record shop's street speaker and it kicked me into adolescence. I still remember the moment I heard it as if it happened 10 minutes ago. In Rock was the first album I bought, Blackmore has been my guitar God since, the Strat is my primary guitar guess why. I'm 63 now and still get goosebumps when I put that record on. Long Live Ritchie!

Same here - only my Saul-on-the-road-to-Damascus moment came in '71 when my sister came home with this album that she'd borrowed from a friend. As a 12yr old kid who had been strictly classically trained as a trumpet player, it was utterly life-changing. Compared to the great symphonies and concertos that had been rammed down my throat, this was the most exciting music that I'd ever heard. That first minute of Speed King.....unbelievable! Instead of been played, it sounded like the instruments were being tortured - but in a new and innovative way. That was MUSIC to me and things were never going to be the same ever again!! And they never have been.

@@TheBigdutchster Precisely. Back in the early 60's the British music press wrote in reverential terms about American blues-based music. Their early champion was one Eric Clapton whom they called "God". Fast forward a couple of years to the Yardbirds and its stable of blues-based guitarists, the aforementioned Clapton, along with Beck then Page. The music press drooled all over them with its lavish praise which translated into popular opinion. Meanwhile Ritchie Blackmore, not really a blues-based player at all, more of a studied one who incorporated classical and exotic motifs into his technique, forged his own path, without the hype nor attention that the other blessed ones received. A pity really, as Blackmore was as good, if not better than a couple of them.

The man in Black was my inspiration and guitar hero. I love his Blackmore's Night group, but do really miss him in the rock and neo classical metal genre. Ritchie began using slide later in his career. I loved how expressive his beautiful slide playing could be when he chose to use it in that way. My favorite example was the song "Vielleicht Das Nächster Zeit".

This was the album which introduced me to rock as a ten year old and Deep Purple are still one of my favourite bands 51 years later. Blackmore, Gillan, Lord, Glover and Paice were absolutely the best line up and I am still blown away whenever I listen to Child in Time. That one track really shows them as a group of musicians who were highly talented and very much at the top of their game.

@steveturner6770 Blackmore had a knack of using the right tone for any situation. He also led the band and they followed. Watch any of their live shows and Blackmore just took control and it was all done on the fly. That's one of the things which made Deep Purple great, they all had the musicianship to follow his lead.

IMO Child In Time has no peer as the best hard rock song of all time, both the original studio and live Made In Japan versions. The lead breaks (and that's what we all wanted back then, right?) in both are phenomenal and exciting

Yeah, In Rock is the definition of Hard Rock and also my favorite of all time. I have listened to it 1000's of times.

1000 times means about 40 years, I think, if you listen to an album a lot. It's about 250 times in 10 years. I listen to a lot of music, and during the last 10 years I have listened to a few albums, not much more than 250 times. I listen to music every day. I listen to more music than any other person I know. I have some songs that I have listened to over 700 times (during the last 10 years), but not the whole album. 1,000 times is a lot for the whole album. Usually, when I stick to one album, it probably won't get the heavy listening for much longer than one month, and it still won't get much more than 100 times. I don't think I have albums that I have listened to 1000 times. 500 for sure, but not 1000. Songs yes. Highway Star is definitely the most Deep Purple song I have heard, but I doubt I have heard it 1000 times. I have listened to Deep Purple since 1994; for me, that's almost 30 years, but I also listen to other bands and enjoy other types of music (heavy metal, prog rock, synth pop, new age, folk, ethnic, jazz, classical, country). There have been years when I have listened to Deep Purple very little. But still I consider Deep Purple my favorite band of all.

In Rock changed my life also. When I bought In Rock with my Paper Route money I had only heard Hush and Kentucky Woman on the Radio. In Rock was in the New Release Section and I thought the Album Cover was Kool. When I first put Album on my GE Wildcat Stereo and Speed King came blaring out of the speakers I never looked back. My parents weren't impressed haha!

I sometimes forget how hard rocking this album was. It may not have had the big radio hits that other Deep Purple albums had, but it had some of the best riffage (is that a word??). Blackmore is often overshadowed by other guitarists of the time, but he shouldn't be. He wrote some of the most memorable riffs of the "classic rock" period. And if anyone asks how could an organ be in a hard rock/heavy metal song, just reply "Jon Lord". He just looks metal! One thing you can always say about the album - it has great song titles!

Great stuff Carl... I first heard the Deep Purple "In Rock" album at a friend's house in 1971 or '72 and it blew me away! The opening track "Speed King" left me breathless. A short time later in 1972, I saw Deep Purple play a live concert at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. This was right after they released the epic multi-platinum album "Machine Head". Ritchie Blackmore's blistering guitar playing just ripped your face off! He was like a wizard on stage. It was clear to everyone in the audience he "owned" the stage. **NOTE: earlier in June '72 I saw Led Zeppelin play a live concert in Baltimore, MD. Without reservation....I can honestly say that Deep Purple were right up there with the intensity and virtuosity of Led Zeppelin. Again thanks a bunch! Tom. Ritchie Blackmore is the reason why I bought a Stratocaster when I was 14! I used to listen to "Made In Japan" over and over. Me and my father used to blast it in the car a lot! One of those perfect live albums where every note - and even every single noise - is perfect! And Ritchie's playing is amazing, I still love his vibrato!

I saw Deep Purple Newcastle City Hall (England) February 1971 - I was 15. I had the LP given as a birthday present. They played numbers from this LP and they absolutely blew me away. I was playing guitar in a band at the time and I wanted to be Blackmore. My favourite rock album.

Man, I am right there with you, though it is my second-favorite rock album of all time. I still love Deep Purple and remain in awe of Ian Paice. When I first heard "in Rock" I was a 13-year old jazz drummer, and generally looked down my nose at rock drummers. By the time I'd listened my way through Flight of the Rat I knew I was a hard rock drummer. I remained one for another 45 years.

In Rock defined the genre and Made in Japan is the finest live album ever (no overdubs whatsoever). Let's not forget early Rainbow either. Extended live versions of Catch the Rainbow., Man on the Silver Mountain, Kill the King, Stargazer, Gates of Babylon etc.

Listen to Jam Stew from the In Rock sessions, but not on the album. It’s an instrumental featuring Blackmore, Lord and Paice. I think Iron Maiden based their whole canon of work on Hard Loving Man’s gallop.

Super analysis Carl! In Rock is among my top 10 favourite albums of all time as well; and Ritchie Blackmore, without question, is absolutely my favourite guitarist ever. You have very effectively broken down key elements of each song for which I have always wondered how they were done - this is immensely helpful to me going forward! Thank you for such an excellent spotlight on one of the greatest albums / greatest guitar players in rock history.
