Ian was 19 (1 month before his 20th birthday) when Shades was recorded. Already he was establishing himself as the best drummer. If you're lucky enough to get the original 1973 vinyl album of Made In Japan, on Space Truckin' Ian gets a 64-beat bass drum roll using one pedal.

The members of the band in that picture, are, in the back row, left-to-right, Nick Simper (bass), Jon Lord (organ - with the shirt), and Ritchie Blackmore (guitar). In the front there is Rod Evans (vocals), and down on the bottom right is young Ian Paice (drums). I love Mark I Deep Purple. Not enough people get to hear it.

You really really really have to do a Deep Purple week. Start with Made in Japan. Best live album ever. Start with Space Truckin. It’s an extended organ solo, but Ian Paice’s drumming is really really really special. The vocals on Strange Kind of Woman are also a must listen, especially the way Gillian and Blackmore play around with call and response. Your mind will be blown.

Watch Deep Purple's (live 1970) "Child In Time", among the GREATEST EVER performances on film/video. Most people focus on the Keyboard/Vocals/Guitar which are chillingly "super-human". But Ian Paice's amazing drums (and the great Bass) are at the center of everythng! It's so much fun watching Paice play. Great footage of his odd drum set, it's "left-handed" and with all his ride/crash cymbals raised above his head! When I want a different style than Keith Moon, I listen to Paice, Bonham, Bill Ward, Nick Mason.

Ian Paice and Mitch Mitchell are (almost) pure jazz drummers, playing rock music. Blend in some Bill Ward to tie in the rock side a little more and some Nick Mason for the most flavor in your fills and that's where I've been headed for 40 years. My original goal was to blend Bonham's heavy beats, with Moon's insane fill driven style. That's always at the core.

Ian Paice changed his style considerably over the years, moving from the jazzy stuff of the early Deep Purple years, to a more direct rock style, to become a really funky and soulful drummer by the Tommy Bolin line-up of the band. Some of his best work is on Stormbringer and Come Taste the Band.

I agree - while Mk3 and Mk4 are not my favourite by any means, those lineups brought out the best Paice has ever played. He's still great doing the 1984 reunion and onwards, but in 73-75 he was still growing in leaps and bounds and afterwards settled into his style.

Guy with moustache is always Jon Lord. At that early time defacto band leader, with the most musical knowledge (he went on to compose for orchestra too). So no wonder the organ is so prominent in this. Ritchie Blackmore on guitar is just starting to catch up. Rod Evans singing on the early albums was not suited for the would be metal band, and later tragically dissappeared from public. This song would take way over 20min live, and they kept the second half solos later on added to the song Space Truckin' - check out the Made In Japan live album, one of the all time bests. Every member is brilliant at his craft, but still they get greater than the sum of the parts together. I think Paice is sometimes overlooked because he was more musical and served the songs, instead of standing out like Bonham et al.

Trivia - Hendrix licked this one and he was in England at the time - Guitarist Bill Parkinson wrote "Lost Soul" for super drummer Carlo Little ..later called Mandrake Root by Blackmore.... Parkinson, Carlo Little and Blackmore played with Lord Sutch and The Savages at varies times through the 60s. Nick Simper bassist with Purple said Blackmore learned the melody "note for note" from Little. ...and Purple later paid Bill Parkinson around £600 for the tune.

Any idea why Ian Paice never got the reputation as being one of the very greatest drummers as did Moon and Bonham? Is there more subtlety in his work that goes under the radar? But when you listen to a song like "Burn," you'd think that alone wuld be enough where he'd be spoken of in the same sentence as the others.

I think the dress shirt is pipe organist extraordinaire and part time rock keyboardist Jon Lord. The magic of Ian Paice to me is his very basic left handed drum kit....... he doesn’t need Pearts massive set up to do the same job. I am no drummer and have no technical knowledge..... only know what I hear and what grabs my attention. I think The Mule live is the performance most Ian Paice fans refer to....... brilliant drumming with one hand ( his right I think ) while doing a 3 minute drum roll with his other hand..... possibly his left hand. lol For Deep Purple the band, their 1970 live performance of Child in Time in the BBC studios is one of the best live rock performances of all time...... comparable to Chicago’s 25 or 6 to 4 from Tanglewood. ( 1970 or 1971 ).
@Rassskle
@Rassskle Жыл бұрын
Someone is playing games with U Tube....... this reaction is listed as only 14 hours old , but you reacted to The Mule and others over 12 months ago. lol Watched The Mule again and noticed the 15 to 20 second one handed drum roll on a cymbal....... but I didn’t see any 3 minute one handed drum roll....... so why have I read about it so many times ? Anyway....... you asked about rock drummers being so proficient and “ jazz” orientated in 1972 and earlier.......also referring to Bonham often . Firstly...... most of Bonhams chops were copied from Carmine Appice circa 1967 to 1969 with Vanilla Fudge. Bonham admitted this fact but gloated he played Appice louder....lol Yeah, well...... Carmine always played for the music and band first...... Zepplins biggest fault was 3 musicians trying to be the front man. From the early 1960’s in England and the birth of heavy and hard rock, many rock band drummers came from a jazz background..... such as Charlie Watts from The Rolling Stones. In fact.......many of the 1960’s rock bands crossed over from jazz, blues, classical and even skiffle ( English jug band ). Appice is from New Jersey so American, but he was not the only jazz drummer in rock....... For the record, Appice was classically trained ( don’t now what in ) but his 2 drumming influences were Rich and Kruper..... Carmine also wrote a best selling drum instruction book that was published in 1972......titled The Realistic Rock Drum Method which has since been revised and republished as The Ultimate Rock Drum Method. So you see....... great rock drumming gods back to the early 1960’s and probably much earlier. Jimmy Page tried to recruit both Carmine Appice and bass player Tim Boggert as his rhythm section before Led Zepplin but they were not available...... so he settled for Bonham and John Paul Jones, who turned out to be better than expected. lol

Yet another drummer who's best of the best and needs to be crammed into that top 10 category. Can you do the one handed roll? There's a video of that somewhere. Didn't he also use Ludwig?
