The drummer is Ian Paice, who is the last remaining original member of Deep Purple. I love Neal Peart, but I would match Paice up to him stride for stride!! Terrific drummer! Another fact: This song was a cover sung here by Rod Evans. Later in 1988 it was rerecorded with Ian Gillan in an updated version. Check it out when you have the time!!

Paice is outstanding. For some reason he doesn't get as mentioned as much when people make lists of their favorite rock drummers. Usually they'll name Bonham, Pearl, Moon, Baker and Copeland. But technically he might be better than all of them.

I think, if they had only the use of a snare drum, Peart wouldn't be able to live with Paice for speed and dexterity. Where Peart scores massively is with his work ethic, inventiveness and his ability to create memorable drum parts, but I think he might have found playing in a band like Deep Purple quite a challenge.

The original Deep Purple here with Rod Evans on vocals and Nick Simper on bass. They released three studio albums before the lineup change and shift in musical direction to heavier music. There's some good stuff on those early Deep Purple albums.

Nice intro. Where was I when this came out? Finishing 8th grade and preparing for High School. Thought it was good, but nothing hinted at where their 2nd album would take me. They surpassed The Beatles as my favorite band, on just the power of their musicianship, and they've remained my favorite since.

Jon Lord was such a trailblazer! For me his organ always separated Deep Purple from the rest at that time. I'm not surprised you recognised the chorus here Nick; this song must have been used many times over the years. It was fun to hear it again.

I was 10 years old when this album came out, and my older brother introduced me to it just before heading back for another tour in Vietnam. @@greybeard2280 My best Ian Paice moments are for sure my first ever drum solo I heard, when he played Flight of the rat ... we even played it to our parents to impress them ... mission failed 😆 the other great memory is, watching an old DVD of a concert in Denmark 72, when they brought a second bass drum for him to play Fireball ... never seen anything like that later....extending the drum set during the concert🤘Of Atomic Rooster I have Death walks beside you, but I think, when Palmer left, a piece of the soul of the band left. Have you ever seen in youtube the videos of ELP playing for the german music show Beatclub ? They have Knife Edge and Take a pebble and in this show the bands played live - awesome ELP 🤘🤘 Last night I went to a concert of the german band RPWL - ever heard of them ? It was the best concert of 2022 after having seen Pat Metheny, Neal Morse Band, Transatlantic, Mostly Autumn and Mystery ... unexpected feelings by their music 😗👍

I was 8 years old in 1968. I remember this song being on the radio at a large picnic in the neighborhood and it was probably 4th of July? Back then there was no way to keep track of songs for an 8 year old LOL! However, I never forgot this song and figured it out eventually. I also remember a bunch of the women sitting around singing 'Light My Fire' by The Doors. There's a cover of the Neil Diamond song, 'Kentucky Woman ' from 1968 also.

When I first heard this, I'm sure I remembered hearing the Billy Joe Royal version from AM radio the year before, but I thought it was by a female singer. Maybe I'm just thinking of the Vanilla Fudge covering the Supremes song "You Keep Me Hanging On" in 1967.

I was working at a racetrack/concert stage ('73) in West Palm Beach, Florida. That gave me access to the backstage. With a little step-by-step maneuvering, I worked myself up to one side of the actual stage itself. I was about 15' from Richie Blackmore. They opened with "Highway star" and I thought I was going to explode. It was loud and intense. The other bands were Savoy Brown, Billie Preston, ZZ Top, Blue Oyster Cult. Quite a night and it was the only time I've ever been on stage.

Hi Nick, I haven't played this album in years. Great to hear "Hush" after all this time. The 1st 3 albums without Gillan or Blackmore. It's very much sounding like a different group.... The Yardbirds almost totally changed their line up and became Led Zeppelin. Deep Purple almost totally changed their line up and became "Deep Purple" Lol ... Well if you love the name already. Ian Paice was the 1st rock drummer I ever paid close attention to. The album "Fireball" was not only my 1st Deep Purple album, but my 1st ever introduction to "Rock Music" Totally blew me away. Incredible album ! ...Back to Ian Paice, .. He was the 1st ever drummer I heard do a live drum solo....on the album "Made In Japan" - which is still today among the greatest ever live recording of any rock band ! To hear it in the 70's was an experience like no other. I didn't buy their 1st 3 albums till after I bought "Deep Purple In Rock" . Still a teenager, always in record stores spending hours browsing through the A - Z of vinyl albums. Memories ! ... Great reaction and ... your intro ... playing the electric....Loved it ...and I would like to dedicate it to our fellow who always watches your channel and doesn't like it. 🤪 Byee Jim X

Deep Purple was so incredibly influential, especially those first two or three lineups. It is shameful that it took the R&R Hall of Fame so long to recognize their significance in music. Hush was probably the first tune of theirs I was aware of. Like a lot of fans, the classic lineup of Gillain, Glover, Paice, Lord, and Blackmore always seemed to be the peak and what a lineup that was!

Nick! That Fender "Strat" is calling out when you do DP and Rainbow! (or Trower & Yngwie) :D. Deep Purple changed themselves, as well as "Rock" into something else, and Heavier by the album "In Rock" with Ian Gillan's 1st appearance In-Studo on vocals (which you have, up to "Burn" w/David Coverdale on vocals). Gillan wouldn't be in Purple till the Live Album; Concerto for Group and Orchestra (which your Live Opeth DVD gets the idea of the graphics and cover photo from). Vocalist Rod Evans for the next 3 albums basically was the voice for the 1960's era of DP. Blackmore is also playing a Gibson ES-335, so it has that older sound/tone. Ian Paice is one of the most iconic Rock drummers that is still bangin' away on the kit. Jon Lord is VERY missed with what he did with the Hammond B3 Organ, especially by the time "In Rock" rolled out in 1970. You have soooo many songs to discover within the Deep Purple catalogue. - Lexi will LOVE this song too :D.

Tell me who else sounded anything like this in 1968?! No one. Early Deep Purple albums had heavier songs like this mixed with almost folky stuff (that Richie Blackmore loved) and some kinda pop-oriented rock songs. They were not bad albums at all, but they really hit their stride later in like 1971/72 with Ian Gillan on vocals and Roger Glover on bass. It seems that singers and bassists didn't last in that band.
