Just saw Deep Purple last week for the first time. Still performing with Ian Paice, Ian Gillan, and Roger Glover. They did this song, most of the classics and some newer things. They have Don Airey on keyboards since 2002 but still featuring the Hammond, and a brand new guitarist Simon McBride since 2022. They were older and Ian can't scream like he did 50 years ago (imagine that) he's still great. Don't know why I didn't catch them back then like I did Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin, but glad I finally completed the set. Great response. Back then I was more into studio mixes, but have grown to love the extras that come with jams during live performances. Like you indicated, both are worth a listen.

I worked as a stagehand when Alvin Lee and 10 years later played an arena around here, 10 years after was the 2nd concert I ever went to. Van Morrison was the opening act. He got booed off the stage lol. Next came the MC5 and they rocked the place ending with my love is like a rambling rose. 10 years after then opened up with hello little schoolgirl :) They did going home for the encore and had everyone on their feet. Hell half the people were standing on their seats the place went totally crazy This is like in 1968

Check out Strange Kind Of Woman from the same concert, this version is not much different from the Made In Japan version, which has a more decent sound, but live footage compensates. After all, the concert in Copenhagen (in Scandinavia) took place on March 1st, 1972, when Machine Head had not yet been released (will be released only on March 25th) and was only the second performance on the tour and the group was just working out their chips.

I like Lazy, especially the Jimmy Barnes and Joe Bonamassa cover. For Deep Purple at their best it is the 1970 live BBC TV performance of Sweet Child in Time and the Made in Japan live Speed King. Also recommend the video of Ian Gillan doing When a Blind Man Cries..... Ian as a solo artist with a brilliant backing band.

British bands would often do short tours to Scandinavia…usually Denmark and Sweden….as it is an area easy to get to from England and they could work out any up issues before a tour to the US.

Never a complaint with Deep Purple. So many great jam bands to explore. This riff is so great to 'expand' and groove on. Nice key change too. These guys could even swing. Speaking of forgetting......Don't give up on Genesis. You have not really played anything 'serious' from them and in particular from the '70s. Do be warned: Genesis is not a 'blues band'. They intentionally avoided that genre; perhaps because SO many bands of the era were deeply blues oriented. 'The Cinema Show' might be a good one to try. Interesting vocals, keys and drums.

Yeah, you should have reacted to the studio version. Also, just a thought ... you really don't need to warn us about the possibility of videos being blocked, because if they are, we won't see them. Just something you might consider. Except for SOME of Deep purple's live performances, like Child In Time, they are almost ALWAYS better in the studio than live. The live performances you normally see that ARE good, are usually the studio version synced with the live video. I will just suggest to you, and I know that sometimes it's easier OR more exciting to do the live versions but, there are very few bands that do it as good or better live than in the studio, and if you've never heard how they originally meant for the song to sound, and you don't ever hear them in the studio, you really don't know the band at all. Some live recordings will make you dislike bands that are otherwise great, and it may just be that you heard a lousy live version, not their best.
@michaelkarlsson5966
@michaelkarlsson5966 Жыл бұрын
no, mostly the studio versions are good but the live versions are way way better, at least live in the 70s. I guess it's a matter of opinion and taste maybe but I prefer the rawness and jamming of the live situation with this band. Many other bands I very much prefer the studio version though...
@StevesFunhouse
@StevesFunhouse Жыл бұрын
@@michaelkarlsson5966 I can definitely see and appreciate that. For live though, I prefer groups like The Allman Brothers Band (Fillmore East and Eat A Peach), Bruce Springsteen, some Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, AC/DC, Eagles, Journey, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Alice Cooper and Stevie Ray Vaughan, to name a few. What I miss in DP's live stuff is the killer solos by Richie Blackmore and John Lord from the studio versions. I don't mind them noodling around, but to me, they never match the awesome beauty of the original ones (IMHO, of course). But, to each his own, right👍😎😊 ???
