Bought the 45 immediately after I heard it in the radio, which were around 75 cents in 1968 when I was 13, and that’s right at 40 pop bottles at 2 cents each! That’s also how we bought cigarettes a couple years later which were 27 cents a pack at the Fina gas station! For many of you listener’s, there were no cans yet and pop bottles were in every bar ditch in the city and broken glass everywhere!

If there is one instrument that I miss from the 60s & 70s it is the organ. In the mid-late 70s the synthesizer gradually phased out the organ (and I loved the synth groups, too), today the organ is almost a dinosaur in rock music. Hell, rock music itself is almost a dinosaur. lol

That unique sound from the organ, (usually was Hammond back then) is from the the Leslie speakers. The cabinet looked pretty plain but inside were amps for the rotating horns on top, and a rotating baffle in front of the bass speaker at the bottom. The rotating speed of the horns and the baffle could be controlled by a foot pedal. This gave it a very unique sound. Later on guitar players started running their sound through them too. Once you've heard Leslie speakers, you can pretty much pick out any song that's using them. Oh, and they were originally invented back in the 30's. Once again that old technology just can't be beat. Leslie speakers are still used today.

Deep Purple's very first single, which was re-recorded in 1988 by their classic "Mark 2"-lineup: singer Ian Gillan (Rod Evans sang in Mark 1), guitarist Ritchie Blackmore, bassist Roger Glover (Nick Simper played bass in Mark 1), keyboard player Jon Lord and drummer Ian Paice. And yes, it is indeed an organ solo you hear on this original version. Jon Lord (1941-2012) was one of the greatest on his instrument - or ANY instrument - in rock history, and the undisputed star of Deep Purple until the eccentric, ego-maniacal Ritchie Blackmore elbowed himself upfront and made the band's signature sound more of a duel between loud, classical organ and loud, classical guitar.

The members of Deep Purple first got together in a UK band called Roundabout around 1967 w/ drummer Chris Curtis... but after Curtis was fired, the band changed the name to Deep Purple. The original band here in 1968 was: Ritchie Blackmore (guitar), Jon Lord (keyboards), Ian Paice (drums), Rod Evans (bass) and Nick Simper (bass)... this was a cover which became a US hit. It was also recorded in the 90's by Kula Shaker and became a hit again. Deep Purple recorded 3 pop rock albums by 1969... then, they heard Led Zeppelin and decided to bring in new members - Ian Gillan (vocals) and Roger Glover (bass) and they switched to 'heavy' rock in 1970.
@erikthompson619

You're almost right. The guy's name was Chris Curtis, and while formerly a drummer in The Searchers, he intended to be the singer in the band we later came to know as Deep Purple. And the band was never actually called Roundabout - Curtis intended it to be, but the rest of the band refused because they hated the name and they never performed under it. At least that's what Nick Simper says, and he should know.

The sixties were wide open, new things happening all over the music world. I was 7 in 1963 when the Beatles became known in the U.S. From there, Rolling Stones, Jimi Hendrix, Cream, the Doors, Led Zeppelin, the continual evolution of the Beatles, Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young, James Gang, Ten Years After, and dozens more. New sounds, new genres..... we became immersed in it. Music diversity in the 60's was such that you can't really say what it was, only that it was always evolving.

Deep Purple were one of the biggest bands in the history and I also recommend listening to White Snake, which is the other part of the Deep Purple band with the ex singer of Deep Purple David Coverdale. Watch the video of the song "In the still of the night".

I like these Deep Purple Mark1 line up recordings. I use to listen all the Deep Purple studio albums in a release order, probably need to do that again so many albums are released after that. If people would only knew in 1968 how to Deep Purple is gonna sound few years later, for example comparing Hush and Speed King.

There are a lot of songs to check out by Deep Purple, but a great one would be "My Woman from Tokyo"

I get the impression Lex would have fitted into right the Woodstock festival and Brad would have been looking around thinking what is all this madness going on! 🙏❤️🤣🤣🤣🤣

Two things jump out. Jon Lord's organ and Ritchie Blackmore's guitar. Deep Purple made the day, behbeh.
