Need to also do "Perfect Strangers" from this album, great song. Also check out the guitarist's other band called Rainbow. Especially the earlier years with Dio on vocals. "Stargazer" is epic.

The line in the song "common cunning linguist" and "master of many tongues" is a play on the word cunnilingus which means oral stimulation of the female genitals. In the 80's, there were some really uptight, prudish people, so congress pushed to censor song lyrics. Deep Purple did a play on words in order to avoid being censored by radio stations. And I believe "knocking at your backdoor" was referencing anal sex. Deep Purple definitely leaned into the stereotype that this music was all about sex, drugs and rock n' roll. Lol

Very good! 😁 Deep Purple 1984 The band had broken up in 1976... former members went separate ways in bands like Gillan, Whitesnake, Rainbow, Trapeze... But in '84, Deep Purple decided to reunite the band w/ Ian Gillan on vocals... first time they had played w/ him since 1973... the line-up was the classic 1970 Deep Purple... Ritchie Blackmore (guitar), Roger Glover (bass), Jon Lord (keyboards) & Ian Paice (drums)

Ah a favorite of mine. About the girls they saw dancing at a strip club. DP wrote this with as many double entendres as they could to see how far the could push the censorship on the radio. The radio version of this is slightly tamer.

I think the idea was to sneak as many sexual references, overt and covert, into the lyrics. And I'm fairly sure the ladies are strippers, groupies or call-girls.
@TheJimprez3 жыл бұрын
You are right. This is 80s DP. A LITTLE bit less HARD-edged, more of a pop drum beat. We played that, Roxanne (the Police) and some U2 and Duran Duran together at ski parties. You HAVE to mix it up... When you rent a ski chalet with daddy's credit card and you post an open house on the radio.. (My friend got sent away to boarding school, for that one...) Ah, the 80s. Pre-Internet. When you could get away with stuff like that. Credit card payments went on a paper slip and took WEEKS to get accounted for.

@@timhankins9245 Gillan doesn't get the credit for his lyrics he deserves. He wrote super lines for Purple Gillan and even Sabbath. Tremendous sense of humor, often a penchant for the narrative and he loves to discuss subjects like war and infinity. You're right, this guy misses a few things here. Almost thought he'd get cunnilingus when he kept repeating a master of many tongues but I guess not.

Bravo! I'm a GenXer whose favorite band was Deep Purple back in high school. This was their reunion album that people waited 11 years to happen. They were the original, best heavy band in concert bar none. The only recommendation I will make is *please*don't ever play a shit MTV official video except perhaps Perfect Strangers, the title track, which shows them reuniting after 11 years and recording the song. And yes, the record company ripped off Mad Max which was popular at the time. There are so many live versions of this and many DP classics that you could only focus on, and their stage presence is legendary. You've got the greatest Rock keyboard player of all time, one of the greatest rock guitar legends who you have to beat to win Guitar Hero. And the fastest and most accurate drummer of the time, who was an octopus like Danny Carey. The singer had a legendary scream, falsetto, and accurate five octave range. He also was Jesus in Jesus Christ Superstar. Finally the bass player (their stinking hippy )contributed to writing music, lyrics and led production. From 1969-73, until 1984 when they they became Perfect Strangers again (and only recommend MTV video). After 10 mind melting shows in the last 25 years, I've evolved to acknowledge TOOL as the GOAT of heavy live bands. But they couldn't have evolved without the foundation that the Unholy Trinity laid down. Long live Deep Purple, Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin! But Deep Purple still delivers the goods while 3/5 of this best lineup pushing 80 years old, including the singer. Catch these legends while you can!

This is off their 1984 album Perfect Strangers. Deep Purple broke up in 1976 after the departure of Richie Blackmore (formed Rainbow 1975) and the death of replacement guitarist Tommy Bolin in 1976. David Coverdale formed Whitesnake with fellow Purple members Ian Paice and Jon Lord. Deep Purple reunited in 1984 with this album. Check out the 1985 video of Under the Gun off this album. kzbin.info/www/bejne/qYHZlWCMiLV3mbs
