Also saw Ian Paice with Gary Moore in 1983. Gary Moore and Krokus were opening acts for Def Leppard, but played a show on their own in Battle Creek on a night between Def Leppard shows. Both Krokus and Gary Moore played for 90 minutes each. A good friend of mine caught a drum stick from Ian Paice, that was stamped 'Def Leppard' on the stick 😆

My first bass guitar was a Peavey Foundation 5. It was black and beautiful and I slung it low. I was 13 years old, and my oldest brother, a guitarist, gave me a list of ten bass guitarists to look up and familiarize myself with. They were Geddy Lee, Roger Waters, Chris Squire, Geezer Butler, Jaco Pastorius, John Entwistle, John Deacon, Steve Harris, Larry Graham, and Roger Glover (he'd add Jack Bruce, Noel Redding, John McVie, and Tina Weymouth to the list over the next year). I knew of them all already except for Jaco and Larry, but my brother wanted me to really dig deep into their playstyles. I liked Glover so much that when the only keyboardist in my high school was looking to play a set including "Perfect Strangers" at our school's talent show, I jumped at the chance. I held on to that Foundation 5 for years, only trading it in toward ordering my first Warwick, and I cried a few tears walking out of that shop without it.

I heard John Lord say he was playing the Hammond C3, which surprised me because the B3 is a more commonly used organ. I also believe he has a synthesizer on top of the Hammond which helps out on the "sound effects" that can't be identified as any other instrument. And of course there is a piano keyboard perpendicular to the Hammond for songs like Woman From Tokyo. Yes, John Lord is my favorite rock n roll keyboard player of all time.

Ritchie Blackmore's hands on his guitar are like, pardon my French, stroking a cat on this one. Which fit this song perfectly, and would also, even on a perfect stranger, heh. Miss my wife (and two daughters) in Prague, so I'm drinking, watching great reactions on KZbin, and writing off-colour comments... A baby monitor, that brings back memories. Thanks for bringing back such memories. I was lucky enough to see Deep Purple headline the "Return of the Knebworth Fayre" in June of 1985, with this line up. Amazing laser light show went with it as well. "Support" bands were the Scorpions, Meatloaf, UFO and more. Pitied the Scorpions roadies as they played in torrential rain and the roadies kept coming out and sweeping the water off the uncovered front of the stage. Also fan of Ian Gillan's own band of around the same time. Your Dad has very good taste in music

One of my favorite memories of my dad is when he put the Made in Japan 8-track tape into the stereo in the mid to late 80's. I was blown away by the music I was hearing and has influenced the music I tend to gravitate to. Love Deep Purple! You are also correct.... Blackmore > Page.

Have seen them 4 times(first time in 73, most recently 2018) including this tour in Los Angeles and they always put on a great show. They never had much more than lighting or some sort of backdrop or most recently a video screen but there are times they really go nuts on the laser lights, like during a Blackmore solo. One of my faves in High school!! Ya, I'm old..LOL

Great stuff. Deep Purples Machine Head and In Rock changed my life as a young kid. I heard those records at the first time 40 years ago, I was born end of that same year when they released In rock. Ian Paice ruled the drumming world those early seventies. Of course John Bonham and Cozy Powell were other big names. But I really like Paiceys stuff during those classic MK2 years.

I came to Deep Purple with 'In Rock'. It was the second album I bought after 'Fill Your Head With Rock', the best sampler album IMO, which introduced me to so many artists and bands. I still have over 400 vinyl albums and as many CDs. 'Child in Time' is a favourite of mine. According to Gillan's biography, the song took a toll on his voice, but Blackmore would play the intro to the song at gigs and force him into performing it night after night. Talk about personality clashes!

Perfect Strangers was my first Deep Purple concert. After all the 80's synth stuff that was happening, Jon Lord's Hammond was such a breath of fresh air. In fact this album was my gateway to DP.... They have such a great back catalog - my only beef is 60's/70's era recording - pretty narrow compared to today, but oh the music!

Ian Paice was the cousin of a Latin teacher at my school...oh those were the days lol. I remember the 84 "tour" or rather their appearance at Knebworth in the UK (and that's a whole other adventure) We were saying back then, that Gillan had "lost it", and that the "Screaming 70's" Gillan was gone for good. Looking after the voice wasn't so important back in those days when "alternatives" in the form of white powders and alcohol were more attractive. Sadly, Gillan has gone from bad to worse over the years, with fans leaving the last Deep Purple concert I went to, wondering if replacing him with David Coverdale (again) wouldn't be such a bad idea. A bit more early 80's history...Ian Gillan had a band with Bernie Torme (Guitar) John McCoy (Bass) Colin Towns (Keyboard) & Mick Underwood (drums) kzbin.info/www/bejne/oHqQoaKVr6lkndU Jon Lord and Ian Paice joined David Coverdale in Whitesnake kzbin.info/www/bejne/fpfUXqisjrutaM0 Roger Glover joined Ritchie Blackmore in Rainbow kzbin.info/www/bejne/eJu3kn2lZ9Npnrs .... ...and then all that got kicked into the air again when Deep Purple reformed in 1984

Thank you so much for visiting some old-school rock. I have been waiting for this eagerly :-) And so true that bands like DP are too much underrated by younger generation. Maybe those who like to watch your great reactions will learn something totally new now :-) Deep Purple paved the way for many many bands to come. The idols of your idols one could easily say :-) Machine Head is their ultimate best album. No fillers, just killers and classics. The best live album of all times, Made in Japan. All musicians present such individual talent and their playing is soooo tight. Pure virtuosity. Cheers Tank, keep safe, keep healthy, greetings from an old-school fart from Finland :-) P.S. Roger Glover`s bass is nowadays a french made bass called Vigier. I have had one and it was the best bass I have ever played. Why RG is playing rather unknown bass, behind that there is a story you should read some day :-)

My dad and I agree on Ritchie Blackmore! I think he is more technical and precise than Page, and that makes him a better guitarist. The stuff he does in Blackmore's Night shows this even more (without distortion you have to be technical and precise). I also think that being in a band with another melodic instrument (keyboards) helps him a bit, because in Zeppelin Page had the only melodic instrument most of the time (except when JPJ played keyboards or other stringed instruments), and he had to do melody and harmony and it is not easy on a guitar.

I was at the second Sydney show in this tour (it was meant to be the first, but they added one before it) - the one George Harrison joined for an encore. The show was great but the sound was terrible - the mixing desk was in front of the stage which was a dead spot in that venue and I could hear drums, bass and any ONE of the others fine, but as soon as everyone came in it was just white noise. Still glad to have been there for the experience! But it's really good to see the videos of what I actually went to hear!!

I was there. Saw them twice in three days. They deliberately stripped the show down to bare basics to showcase the music - no dry ice, bare minimum lighting (remember Rainbow used the big Rainbow at one stage) It was incredible. Blackmore and Lord dueling with each other was breathtaking. I'm with you Ritchie is better than Page. H e was doing stuff back in 75 , 76 that no-one else bothered to even try.

Ian Paice is wearing such a typical Aussie outdoor hat from the 80s. :-) I think Blackmore didn't use the slider on the guitar for the studio version - a nice change-up live. In their "sabatical" from DP, Ian Paice and Jon Lord also joined Tony Ashton for the excellent, very different, and underrated Paice-Ashton-Lord album, along with some other duos.

i'm so lucky that in my youth there was Deep Purple, Rainbow, Black Sabbath, AC/DC, Motörhead, Metallica and many that kind of bands to guide me in to world of rock. It gives you good foundation to follow new bands.

Brings back memories. I went to one of the Sydney concerts which I think was a couple of days before and it was bloody awesome (and very loud). I've seen DP six times now and the Mark II lineup is my favourite (seen that lineup 3 times). I've also seen Led Zeppelin live (in the early 70's) and IMHO DP were better (but I love both bands). Music sort of died for me in the 90's but has been rekindled because of Nightwish. Please continue reviewing more DP especially some of their lesser known stuff like Rat, Bat Blue & Place in Line. Awesome stuff mate.... :)

Deep Purple es la banda de hard rock más grade de la historia (Totalmente ignorada y subestimada en USA). Para apreciar su verdadera dimensión casi siempre hay que verla y escucharla en conciertos en vivo..., Made in Japan, Made in Europe, In concert..., etc, etc. Y si efectivamente Ritchie es DIOS... Saludos

Made in Japan is probably one of the best live album I ever listened, if not the best... I partucularly love the Child in Time, giving me goose bumbs every single time, even after years ! I finally found a video version of that concert, not exactly the same song selection than the album, but thats a definite killer, you can even see Gilian crying for real when screaming on Child in Time. Thank you Tank. By the way Vigier is a French guitar company so try to pronounce it the French way, with er pronounced é at the end.

If I remember, John Lord's main organ early on was a Hammond C3 run into a Marshall Plexi. Around the time they did "Burn" (another amazing album, but featuring David Coverdale and Glenn Hughes), he had started incorporating the Leslie speaker as well, amongst other synths and modulators. In regards to Blackmore's amps, if you ever get the chance to try his ENGL signature model, it is fantastic!!!
