My favorite album from the Coverdale era. I played this 8-track in my '68 Chevy back in the day a million and one times. Cruisin', partyin' and loud rock and roll. It could NOT have been better days! edit: If you think Ian Paice is outstanding on this track, just wait 'til you get to "You Fool No One". * muah *

You are the first 'Reaction-ist', I've watched who has picked out, the most underated Drummer of all time...Ian Paice. And he's still doing it with the band ! He is the only original member in the band. Well done J.P.

He is indeed, when Paul McCartney, was putting an all-star band together, to record an album ( its name escapes at this moment in time) on guitar, he had David Gilmore, bass himself, keyboard Pete Wingfield & on drums Ian Piace.

Hi JP. DP from UK. Yes, I agree about Ian Paice here - he can Bang The Drum All Day! So much energy on this track, one of my favourites from this phenomenal album - so unexpected, after major personnel changes, but new singers David Coverdale and Glenn Hughes work so well together (as they did when I saw them live on this tour). And to think that Coverdale was plucked from obscurity. Can't leave out Ritchie Blackmore, who contributes one of his knock-out solos - no cliched licks, it's unique Ritchie. P.S. my song ref Bang The Drum All Day is by Todd Rundgren.

Justin, have you noticed that the verses and choruses of this song alternate between David Coverdale and Glenn Hughes on vocals? The nervous "Lay Down, Stay Down" is one of my favourite Burn tracks (along with the soulful "Sail Away", the energetic and groovy "You Fool No One" and the boogie "What's Going On Here"). Yep, whatever the song, Ian Paice is always on fire! (one of my favourite drummers, along with Barriemore Barlow and a few others). The only slight criticism I'd make is that the mix buries the bass in relation to the other instruments. In my opinion, this applies to all the tracks on the album.

Honestly, I didn’t give Glen a thought when he joined DP. It had been a while since Medusa came out and I didn’t make the connection, duh. Coverdale, I could take or leave. Waaaay later on, Glen shared vocals in Black Country Communion and I woke up to his excellent singing and his DP history. I had this 8track but I think I was a little pissed, so it didn’t get the attention it deserved. Sorry bout that. Please don’t forget to come back soon.

I'm not a big Deep Purple fan - just not quite my thing, though you've got to respect them. But this album got played till the grooves wore out in my youth. Always was my favorite disk of theirs. Maybe it's just got a smattering of progginess, and less drenched with whiskey? Whatever it was, still sounds great!

Yeah! I love Ian Paice drumming, and I like Coverdale vocals, although I prefer Glenn Hughes overall in the duo. By the way, two Purple tracks Hughes is awesome singing: Holy Man and This Time Around. This last one I think will blow you mind. Hope you react these track someday. Thanks!

Coverdale is amazing, but sleep on Glenn Hughes. A big reason why the Mark III is so great is having these two different styles of vocalists compliment each other

Are you going to do the whole album? Good album overall. Burn, Might Just Take Your Life and Mistreated are my favorites. Can't go wrong with Ian Paice. Glen Hughes has the high vocals.

To me Ritchie Blackmore "saves the song" (not quite, but it's something less in that direction). It's all good and well till the solo, but the song is missing something. And then there it comes, and it becomes sufficiently elevated to be worth another lesson one day.

Not a big fan of Coverdale, or any Deep Purple album after "Who Do We Think We Are". But, Deep Purple's first 3 albums from 1966-1969 are prog rock masterpieces. May I suggest, when you're through with this one, try their self-titled 3rd album.

This is one of the weaker tracks on the album, and it still sounds great. I think Paice's drumming got better playing with Glenn Hughes instead of Roger Glover and I love the way the singers share the vocals. One of Ritchie's better solos as well, although the whole band is outstanding on this album.

Funnily enough, I find "Lay Down, Stay Down" one of the best tracks on the album and I think Purple's rhythm section was better when Roger Glover was playing bass. I think this may be because Glenn Hughes' bass is really buried in the mix on this album (a little less on Stormbringer and a lot less on Come Taste the Band). On the other hand, I do agree that Coverdale and Hughes' voices work very well together.... well, in the studio, because live I've always found that the two of them overdo each other vocally with their respective screams and Coverdale's constant "baby baby babe" (akin to Robert Plant😉).

@@a.k.1740 It's a strong album from start to finish, so calling it a weaker track is not to diminish it at all. I still like it a lot. Ian Paice has said he preferred playing with Roger Glover because he had more freedom to play what he wanted, but I think having to lock in with Glenn's funkier phrasing made him a better and more versatile drummer overall. I agree about the bass being buried a bit, but I can feel it even without consciously hearing it, if that makes sense. I agree that Glenn overdoes it live, but I Iike Coverdale's live vocals very much, particularly when it gets to Mistreated.

@@delorangeade I never particularly liked "Mistreated", perhaps because of Coverdale's 'baby baby babe' and 'oh woman, oh woman, oh woman' (which reminds me of Robert Plant's worst moments with Led Zeppelin!). Burn is a very good album, but overall I prefer Stormbringer and Come Taste the Band.

@@a.k.1740 I've come to appreciate those two albums much more in recent years, even to the point of thinking maybe Ritchie should have stuck around. I now think Stormbringer is better than the first Rainbow album, although I wouldn't want to do without Rising in my collection.

@@delorangeade As for Rainbow, I particularly like Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow, perhaps because there are fewer digressions than in Rising and Long Live Rock 'n' Roll, but on the whole these three and On Stage are my favourites from the band (not fond of Graham Bonnet, Joe Lynn Turner or Doogie White). Of the post-Purple era, I especially like the albums by the Ian Gillan Band and Gillan (the band).
