1974, I’m standing at the school bus stop with my best friend. I’m 8 years old. My best friend’s big sister Tracy is there too, sunlight streaming through her hair, lip gloss gleaming...she carries a portable 8 Track player with Deep Purple’s Machine Head jammed into it, Smoke on the Water begins to play and Tracy begins to sway. I am transfixed. I wanted to be that cool. I wanted to be as absolutely, unbelievably cool as thirteen (possibly 14) year old Tracy was right then. Her high school books, (our small town had a high school that included middle school grades) her Pee-Chee, her friggin’ portable 8 Track player and that swaying to the most rockin’ music ever...I became a Deep Purple lover at that very moment and have been since. Bad Ass.

That's an awesome story @Kim Strain. I love Deep Purple too, got to see them live in Florida in the 80's after Perfect Strangers came out. I think we all experienced something like your bus stop story when we were young, often resulting in a lifelong love for a band or type of music or other art form. I remember a family vacation spent at my Uncle Frank's place in the 70's in upstate New York. He was a rocker, played guitar in bands and had tons of rock albums, and one day he played Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon. I was completely blown away and set out to collect every album they ever made. To this day I remember that vacation and how it influenced my love of music in general and rock in particular. Cherished memories that stay with you forever. Thank you for sharing yours :)

In those days we were conscripts to fight communist financed terrorists. We were under the impression that the USSR would not allow this kind of music. I àm surprised to hear you good people could actually listen.....and that is great. I'm 66 now and probably listen to this song at least once every two weeks. My favourite rock band and of course Pink Floyd. I really wish I had the money, oppurtunity and there were no politics or religous problems standing in the way so that I could visit all the "....stans". Your countries and the areas on the eastern (?) side of the Ural mountains must be the most beautiful places in the world. South Africa.

We flew from Utah to Scranton. PA last month to see them with Yes opening for them. Paid for the meet and greet before the show. Signed record jackets, a T-shirt, and got tons of pics with just us and the band. I asked Roger for a guitar pick, and he said, "Come to the stage right in front of me, and I'll give you one. Come right after Smoke." I did, and he did, too! What a night! I missed 'em in Salt Lake City 49 years ago, but this totally made up for it! The guys were awesome! =^,,^=

He's certainly in a class all by himself! The band was having a hard go of it in Pittsburgh one evening, Gillan was struggling with a sore throat, the openers that night had the sound an absolute mess, & if it could go 'wrong' it did... Then after 1 song, Jon, playing very softly with one hand, waved to the band "Come here" & they did. They seemed to 'huddle' like football players, and after maybe 20 seconds or so, (I have no clue what was said??) these guys were having a huge laugh on stage, & they actually started the show over. It 'seemed' like these guys, veteran rockers by this point, were so "into it", happy up there, having fun as they absolutely killed it from then all the way through the encores. Magical night, one of my top concert memories ever, & Mr. Lord said or did something that night to get his buddies back to "who they were & what they did" as well as any band I have ever experienced... in a matter of seconds, pure genius!

@mitsanut58692 жыл бұрын
I don't know if you know it but if I'm not mistaken, Ritchie stole it (the riff) from some other record and put his own twist to it. Only on that record, the riff really wasn't the leading riff. He talks about it in one of the documentaries and he's quite open about "stealing" the ideas. Smoke On The Water was taken from one of Beethoven parts and he just played it backwards. Now, I don't try to minimize or even badmouth Ritchie for it because as a musician, I understand perfectly well that we all take our inspirations from someone else before us and try to build something out of an idea we dig. DP at its peak is probably the best band that ever existed. In my book, their trilogy albums are simply hands down unbeatable. I know many like Led Zeppelin better but I never really was fond of LZ. Not that I don't respect them but DP was my DNA type.
