Deep Purple recorded the song in Switzerland as part of the album Machine Head ("Smoke on the Water" tells the story of their "adventure" best) and the song was written while the band was playing in an empty hotel with the recording truck parked outside. "Pictures of Home" basically describes the band wanting to go back home. But the instrumentals are monumental.

Wally, great reaction to one of my Machine Head favs! The main difference between DP & Rainbow is Jon Lord. Now, once again I am begging you to react to DP last live album / video called "Come Hell or High Water". "Anya" and/or "Medley"... both are amazing. Please watch these... Look at the liner notes for Who Do We Think We Are - there's a segment of a newspaper article about British mountain climbers taking Deep Purple tapes with them on an expedition - think that might be the origin of this song lyric wise.

This sounds like an allegory regarding the Greek mythology story of Prometheus, who disobeyed the top Greek God Zeus, and was chained to a mountain to have an eagle eat at his liver for punishment and torture. Probably wrong but that's what comes to mind.

Wally, I agree you can not hold one over the other. Both groups are fantastic. Kind of like Black Sabbath, you can't hold Ozzy over Dio. Both great in their own way.
