… Rock music is explained like this: There's a lead guitar, an organ, a bass, a singer, a drummer... and there's DEEP PURPLE!! … There is nothing more to say! ... 🎸🎹🥁🎤 Thank you

Jon Lord was an absolute keyboard wizard! I love his input for Child in Time, and Ian Gillan doesn't do too badly with the vocals either! There is a live for that one, but it's in a BBC studio, and the audience were told to 'behave' 🙄 It's all prim and proper! If you want a driving song from Deep Purple - Highway Star

You hear that Smoke on the Water is overpplayed. Bullshit. This song still kicks ass after 50 years. This live version here proves it. Jon Lord plays his keyboards like a guitar

It's a great tune, interesting start to it, thats the thing with live recordings, you never know what extra bits they'll throw in the mix. Overall I'm more of a pink floyd fan but this tune is one of the best rock songs ever!

The audio is from the first day in Japan, the video from the third ( maybe the second ). The reason is that Ritchie deliberately played the riff wrong day two and three. You can see it on the video where Ritchie looks at Gillan and with a smile plays it wrong making Gillan laugh.
@skyscraper7474
@skyscraper7474 11 ай бұрын
No my dear friend, the video is from "scandinavian nights"! There s no absolutely any video about Made in Japan.
@larteonceagain
@larteonceagain 11 ай бұрын
@@skyscraper7474 They did shoot about 4-5 minutes from the third night in Japan. And it's the from the 17:th you can find that that with both video- audio and the date here on KZbin. BBC had a team there, and was allowed to shoot a few minutes. Scandinavian Nights is from Stockholm 1970, the swedish radio ( Tonkraft ) was there and recorded the whole show, but ONLY audio. And since Smoke wasn't written in 1970 there would impossible even for Purple to play it before it was written. You might be referring to Denmark 1972 where Danish radio-TV recorded the whole show with both video and audio there. And when you look at that video you can see that the background isn't the same as it was in Japan and on the video shown here. and the 72 Denmark was never called Scandinavian Nights. So it is Japan August 15:th with the audio and the video is Japan August 17:th.
@skyscraper7474
@skyscraper7474 11 ай бұрын
@@larteonceagain the point is that the only video recording of that period (and exactly 6 months before made in JAPAN, February) was that of the live show in Denmark, released on VHS under the name of S. nights. and if I'm not mistaken, subsequently with a special edition also containing material from the live show in New York 73. for the Japanese tour, however, and strangely knowing the Japanese, no steps were taken to record and publish any video material. There aren't even any bootlegs. and on KZbin, the video images of one are always, mistakenly and I believe deliberately, overlapped with the sound of the other. and doesn t even have to be a hawk to notice the general inconsistency and out of sync between the two
@larteonceagain
@larteonceagain 11 ай бұрын
@@skyscraper7474The problem with the Denmark show is that they never played Smoke on that show. If you listen to Live In Japan, where all three shows are, you can clearly hear that Ritchie plays the riff exactly and deliberately wrong and Gillan laughs on the 17:th. Ritchie also played it deliberately wrong on the 16:th. So therefore they had to choose the 15:th when Ritchie didn't fool around. The only one from the 15:th. Yes the VHS says Scandinavian Nights but it's the Stockholm gig that are "the real" Scandinavian Nights.
@skyscraper7474

@@larteonceagain Yes, it's true! You are right. it doesn't contain it. and ritchie, on riffs, was also known for not holding them. at least not always. what I place the emphasis on is the mistake of associating, overlapping, the smoke on the water of made in JAPAN from the official album version with this video which is, yes, from the Japanese tour, but from another evening, as you rightly recalled you, and also very badly made. not only that, the sound+video edits of the time were often made differently, so much so that they were out of sync and wrong.

Ritchie is as Jon said, 4 guitarists in 1. He could shred like you wouldn't believe (one of the original shredders). He could play with feeling, play in a jazzy style, play classical and all extremely well. He now plays acoustic guitar with his wife in Blackmore's Night. H really is the best. There are many players who play fast scales, but that's all they do. There is a difference between a skilled player and a musician. Ritchie Blackmore is not only a very skilled player, but a musician. All of them in Purple are musicians. Jon was classically trained.

For me, Made In Japan is the live album of all live albums. This is that recording with various clips of footage from other shows. Unfortunately, only saw the Burn tour with the MK3 lineup, good, but not as good as this iteration.

Listen to Roger's bass playing. He provides a great bottom. And when Ritchie is soloing, his bass follows him. Ritchie's guitar sings throughout his solo. And Paice's monstrous drumming. I have heard Smoke over a thousand times. This is THE definitive version.

No it isn't. It's about what happened before they even started recording Machine Head. They went to see Frank Zappa, and stupid with a flare gun...well you know the rest. They recorded this track last as they needed one more song for the album. It's possibly the most oft-told story in rock history so I'm surprised you got all confuddled about it. Maybe you're just not the sharpest tool in the box eh?🤷‍♂

They hated this song at the beginning because it was too simple….the most of their songs are way more complex. They are all top musicians and avoided to play the song but it was so popular that they were obliged to include it in all of their shows until today….
@CB-xr1eg
@CB-xr1eg 5 ай бұрын
They didn't hate it, they just thought they couldn't do a lot with it until Martin Birch said they needed one more song for the album (Machine Head), someone suggested this, (the working title was The Dang Dang Song), so they decided to write the story of the casino fire to this music. Roger Glover came up with the title after seeing the smoke from the fire drifting across Lake Geneva, and rock history was born. The most famous rock riff ever.
