One of the most recognizable opening riffs in rock. Back in the seventies when we heard this, or the opening riff of "Voodoo Chile (Slight Return) from Jimi Hendrix or "Layla" from Derek & the Dominoes, or "Stairway to Heaven" by Led Zeppelin, among others, come on the radio we'd crank the volume to 11. We had some great music back then, didn't we?

@@Jackle61 Hammond still produces organs, some simulating the B3 (which was electro-mechanical). Other keyboards also emulate the Hammond sound (e.g. Clavia). Oh and that's Jon in the documentary clips.

Rebaka Deep Purple went thru lineup changes thru out the years to present with 3 original members, Ian Gillan, singer, Ian Paice, drummer, and Roger Glover, bassist. Last lineup was in 1974 before DP broke up. Then about 10 years later, in 1984, DP reformed, Mark II lineup shown here are back for a reunion and new album called Perfect Strangers. Blackmore left the band, and Jon Lord, man who was speaking, keyboardist died..... Today, DP continues on.......

@@verginithe at that time Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath were known as the "Unholy Trinity" as the media/press knew something was going on but they weren't ready for it. With all that in mind all 3 of them together were the fathers of heavy metal take away one of them and it wouldn't be the same - it's that simple.

It's a Hammond C-3 organ. Jon wanted his organ to sound like a guitar so he could play rhythm to Ritchie's lead (Ritchie didn't like playing rhythm). With sound engineer Marin Birch, Jon was able to get the organ to play through a Marshall guitar amp and thus "The Beast" was born. At times it is difficult to distinguish between Ritchie and Jon because they are so pitch perfect when playing.

Deep Purple Mark II lineup my fav of all time. You love keyboards? Emerson, Lake and Palmer in the freezing cold weather in an empty stadium outside is perfect for you as they play Fanfare for the Common Man. I have seen both groups live in the 70s so I am allowed to mix in ELP with my fav band Deep Purple. It kicks butt! BTW great reaction again!

The great thing about Deep Purple is that every performance you listen to will be a different version. Love love Deep Purple. I got to see them in concert back in the day. The Colosseum was packed and the crowd went nuts when they played this song. Long live rock and roll. Great reaction with you dancing in your chair. Love it.

So, if you want to read my story.....In early "68 I was "dating " a girl from a different high school, we'd never actually met. She wanted to see The Turtles(Happy Together) . So i got us tickets for The Grass Roots, The Turtles, and Deep purple. All I knew about Deep Purple was the song Hush, which had been on the radio for a few weeks. The Turtles made her happy(which was cool) but then Deep Purple hit the stage and my life changed. I didn't know that an organ could sound like that(Hammond B-3 played thru Leslie speakers, the top end came thru spinning horns which added that incredible vibrato, and I didn't know a guitar could sound like that. And there was Ian Paice on drums, playing left handed. ....still...today, one of the baddest grooves in Rock'n' Roll. I have so many memories tied to this band. Thanks for your reaction! Oh...and.. yeah... long before Queen and really long before Nightwish, there was Deep Purple's 3rd album. And also Lemmy from Motohead when asked who was the first metal band, said "Deep Purple".

Ok you must do "Highway Star! You will ❤️ it. "Smoke on the water" introduced me to Deep Purple in 1970... It was the no brauner song if every budding band of the day! Such memories, I was the sound guy, then and still do it today. Still having fun, Rockin into my 60s. 70s were the shit! Wish I could go back and do it again sometimes! But no mulligans in real life. Maybe golf, but life isn't so kind!

Purple were the 1st band I went to see , on a school trip, and the tour was the Machine Head tour which featured Smoke on the water as the late great Jon Lord RIP mentioned in his introduction. The support was going to be a band called Nazereth, have a listen to them especially This flight tonight, a copy of a Joni Mitchell track, which when she does in concert introduces it as that great Nazereth song.

Deep Purple went to Montreux in Switzerland, end of 1971, to record their new album at the local casino, for tax purposes. The band was invited to a matinee at the Montreux casino where Frank Zappa was attending and a fan shot a flare gun during the concert. The flare ended-up in the ceiling which consisted of straw and the place was on fire in an instant. Frank Zappa kept his cool and helped a lot of attendees out of the place while Claude Nobbs ('Funky Claude' in the song), who was the officer of tourism in Montreux at the time, went in and out of the burning building, helping people escape. Nobbs felt responsible for Deep Purple being out of a place to record and he took it upon him to find a new place. His choice fell on the local Grand Hotel, which was closed for the winter anyway. Deep Purple agreed to record there and called-up the Roling Stones Mobile recording studio which was a recording facility in the back of a large truck. Problem was that the truck didn't fit through the entry gates of the Grand Hotel, so, the lads of Deep Purple had to make their way all through the hotel, over balconies and down drain pipes, to reach the 'studio' after a take to listen to what was just recorded. Since the hotel was closed, the heating had been shut-off and spotlights were used to get a bit of warmth. The first thing singer Ian Gilln saw when waking-up the day after the fire, was smoke floating over Lake Geneva and he came-up with "Smoke On The Water". The rest, as they say, is history...

I love your reaction. The man in the start and in the end was Jon Lord, who was the one playing the "piano" which was a Hammond Organ. He was a original master in this discipline. He was also influenced by classical music and even made some albums with a mix of electric and classical music, f.ex Sarabande. This band is one of the three main heavy rock bands from the 70´s (The bands, Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath are a must to know if you want to know the 70´s rock history..the heavy rock part of it especially

That was Jon Lord (RIP) on organ doing the intro and outro commentary. The guitarist has moved on to other things, but the other three are still doing DP, their 21st studio album came out in 2020 (Whoosh)

In 1989 there was a devastating earthquake in Armenia - a bunch of the "gods" of rock ( David Gilmore - Tommi Iommi - Brian May Richie Blackmore Brian Adams just to name a few ) got together and did a truly amazing "redo" of this song - to raise money for the Armenian people truly awesome !! All that talent jamming on one of rock's anthems ! Legendary !!!! Give it a listen - You'll love it ! There's also a documentary on the making of it that is great !!

Hi Rebeka - i admire your reaction to this 50+ year old song, and enjoyed your reaction immensely! Deep Purple is for sure one of the founder bands of Rock from back in the days. If you do like them that much, make a study out of it, as there are so many more famous and not so famous records of their career. I was fortunate to them them live in the '70s and these impressions will last a life time, and i am still now a loyal fan to them. Deep Purple rocks, and they will rock-on for many more generations of Rock lovers to enjoy!!

Evidence that head-banging existed way back. This song also turned out to be important for their taxes. England wanted them to pay taxes for the work they did in Montreux because they would have written the songs in England. But this song proved they hadn’t cause the fire hadn’t happened yet. Many guitar stores have signs NO PLAYING THE SMOKE ON THE WATER RIFF! Great great song!

Deep Purple was my first concert ever. I was 12 years old (in 2000) and these guys came to play in a stadium. Gillan, Morse (no Blackmore), Glover, Lord and Paice. And when they played this, the whole place went totally crazy. This is one of the greatest Heavy Rock anthems "Becks" and I just loved your reaction (Head-Banging, YEAH) 😉 👍

Almost every guitarist picking up the guitar for the first time learned how to play Smoke on the Water. The very first song, that says a lot. What always puzzled me was that Deep Purple took forever to get into The Rock N Roll Hall Of Fame and that's a sin.

Not the same without Lord and Blackmore ( Morse is amazing ) but this like the not the whole family together , many people blame Blackmore for be really difficult and some fans forget Gillan ( he’s like Ritchie but less mad) Gillan make crazy Ritchie on Cleveland ( he put so much ketchup on Ritchie’s food ) and later Ritchie ask to Ian Gillan :”You put this on my food “ and Gillan said “: yes “ so Ritchie put the food on his face. Ritchie is like Hendrix not only for be inspired by Jimi dive bombs and the vibrato the neck tone on the stratocaster of Jimi sound clean like a real singlecoil today some guitar players Play that tone on the same neck pickup but they Play with heavy strings and the original neck tone is losing then sound like a les Paul humbucker jazz clean neck tone . Ritchie play with custom gauge strings 10-42 and Hendrix 8-38 . purple never play with Ritchie again because the reunion idea comes to Lord last wish to Ritchie :” you must make the peace with Purple guys “ Was too late because without Lord is not the same , Ritchie must do this on 1995 but he was busy with his medieval music “ Blackmore’s Night “ that was the big reason why Blackmore never haved the reason to jam again with Purple MK2 reunion .
