I was in high school when this came out. 50 years later it still rocks. My son, when I got him a guitar for his 15th birthday was the 1st song he learned to play. I was a proud dad hearing "dun, dun dun" coming up from the basement. One of the most recognizable opening riffs in rock.

Even today it is the first riff any budding guitarist tries to play. Prior to '72 it was Sunshine Of Your Love by Cream. Prior to '67 it was Peter Gunn by Duane Eddy.

The best track on the vinyl is Space Truckin' with Ian Pace doing a 64 beat drum roll on the bass with one pedal. I bought the Made In Japan CD and I am really pissed Space Truckin' has been changed. I gave my vinyl to a friend before I realised it was changed.

One of the great riffs ever, you are right, it is part of pop culture. As for the crowd, I saw Deep Purple 6 times in the 70s and 80s and we never sat down when they were on stage, Ritchie Blackmore might break into an amazing solo at any time. For one of his best, see them at the California Jam 1974 and the amazing You Fool No One. Enjoy! 🎵🎸🎤🎹🎶

Oh my god, Jack Black plays this riff terribly - like a first grader, not a hard rocker. And the person who speaks in the preface is the late keyboardist Jon Lord. If you like the visual side, then I would recommend Lazy from a live concert in 1972 in Copenhagen.

Yeah, I love your reactions, and I love this one, but this is 1 song that I wish you would've done the studio version first. It sounds much better and there's an actual guitar solo that is awesome. If nothing else, you should at least do this for yourself. Some bands sound good in the studio, some sound better live, and some waver back and forth. It may just be me, but I think Deep Purple did some songs really great live, but this particular version wasn't one of them (IMHO). For some reason, Richie Blackmore (lead guitarist) didn't do a lot of lead solos on their live songs, and on the live ones he did, his solos were completely different from the studio versions. I would LOVE to hear you do a reaction to the studio versions of Lazy, Highway Star and most definitely, BURN (new singer) !!! They have other really great songs too like, My Woman From Tokyo, Space Truckin', Mistreated, etc. but along with this one, those first 3 are my favorites.

Song literally describes the December 4, 1971 Montreaux Casino fire which started when, during a Mothers of Invention concert, some idiot fired a flare gun, igniting the rattan ceiling. The building was destroyed. The band were recording Machine Head with the Rolling Stones' mobile unit, which had state-of-the-art equipment. The song followed quickly thereafter. It went on--Machine Head.

I think all members of the band had a hand in writing this iconic song...I don't believe Roger Glover wrote the entirety of the song as was claimed in a previous comment. I recall Richie Blackmore being interviewed, where he said he got the idea for rhe riff from Beethoven's 5th symphony. He chose a part of the symphony, inverted the music score and then came up with the iconic riff. Blackmore, at least claimed something to this effect and said, " I owe Beethoven's a lot of money!."

Jon Lord used to get so animated in his playing that we would rock the Hammond B3 organ on its legs during shows. To avoid damaging it accidentally, he had an actual attachment constructed that the Hammond would sit in on stage that would allow him to rock it back and forth, but never to the point where it would topple over.

I've been a huge fan of Deep Purple for 50 odd years and saw them live twice in the 70s. The song is about an actual event, a fire at a concert by Frank Zappa in 1971 that the band saw from across a lake hence smoke on the water. Try "Fireball", my personal favourite, from the album of the same name.

With all due respect to his claim at the beginning that "all you have to do is listen to the words to know what it's talking about", umm well, to an extent maybe from at least what you can make out of the lyrics., But not really. If it were the case that the lyrics give you a clear picture of what, where and who the story was all about, then so many people wouldn't be coming up to him asking what it's about even after they've listened, lol. And note, that just the fact that he did give a short explanation before the song is an indication they knew you really wouldn't know what exactly the full story was about. So, no, it's not going to always be that clear in the lyrics. He's stretching a little with that assumption. Basically he's promoting the song and in essence saying "If you wanna know what the song is about, _buy the record_ and listen to it, lol.

The lyrics to Smoke On the Water are readily available online and rather clear in their narrative. There's no metaphor, no interpretation required. The fact that they still get questions about what the song means says more about the person asking the question. They either haven't heard/read the lyrics themselves or couldn't be bothered to do their own research and find the larger part of the story behind the song. It's not Child In Time.
@wallnut6666
@wallnut6666 Жыл бұрын
@@robertkennedy5414 Well, you basically just kinda proved my point about the lyrics. No one would _have_ to go "do their own research" if they could already fully understand what particular event the lyrics were referring to when they heard them! And as for the "haven't heard/read the lyrics themselves", why would anyone ever ask what the lyrics mean in the if they'd never heard or read them in the first place? Regarding being "readily available online", first off, from what I've been able to find out, this interview with Jon Lord took place some twenty to twenty four years ago in preparation for either the 30th or 35th year anniversary of Deep Purple, not sure exactly which it was. But regardless, that would put this interview with him speaking at about the 1998 to 2003 range. So, taking into context the time at which he made that comment about still getting asked "What is the story about Smoke On The Water?", the internet was still pretty much in it's early stages. Not nearly as many people were going to the web for their info as nowadays. Furthermore, the wealth of information found online wasn't quite what it is now. Even sites like Wikipedia (probably the most read reference website in the world) wasn't introduced until 2001. My point being, prior to when Jon made that statement in this interview, people had been asking about the lyrics in this song for decades going all the way back to when the song was released. So, it wasn't like they could just jump on the internet and read about it in a matter of minutes? And the average person wasn't going to have the same kind of sources at their fingertips about some event that happened in some other part of the world two years prior to the song's release? And how many people, including the average teenager or college kid listening to rock and roll during the 70s or 80s, or even just prior to the availability of the internet in the 90s, do you seriously think would go to the local library and try to comb through thousands of indexes of news stories about events that took place in Montreux, Switzerland in 1971 just to get the "larger part of the story behind the song"? Thats assuming they even had the free time to waste or wanted to go to that trouble? Bottom line is, the lyrics to the song are not clear about the event and I don't think they were really meant to be because generally, songwriters don't necessarily want to always spell out everything. And as such, particularly when it comes to a song about some event that as I already pointed out, probably didn't make front page international headlines around the entire world or in local newspapers or local TV stations in 1971, that leaves questions that are inevitably going to be asked by people who heard the song.
@robertkennedy5414
@robertkennedy5414 Жыл бұрын
@@wallnut6666 I fail to see what is so mysterious about the lyrics to the song. The band went to Montreux to make an album. The place they intended to use burned down during a Frank Zappa show. They had to move into an abandoned hotel across the lake to make the defining album of their careers, and giving them one of the most iconic songs in the history of music, let alone rock and roll. There's no hidden meaning to them, so that's why the question, in Jon's opinion, doesn't make sense.
@wallnut6666
@wallnut6666 Жыл бұрын
@@robertkennedy5414 "Hidden meaning?" I never said anything about a hidden meaning? Lol. I merely said the lyrics aren't clear about the event that was happening. But I digress, you obviously completely ignored my last post when I pointed out that when you indicated that the only people that would be asking questions would be those who had not already gone to the trouble to do research or listen to or read the lyrics. Which proves my point, that if the lyrics were so clear as to what the event being talked about in the song, then _obviously_ there would be _no need_ to do research! Nor would there be any reason to ask about lyrics that they'd never heard or read to begin with. Quite frankly, the reasoning of your statement makes absolutely no sense. You contradict your own claim with that argument. But regardless, I'll reiterate again, that just by the fact so many people have asked over the decades, what exactly the song is talking about, is _clear_ evidence that the lyrics aren't very clear after all. That's just a simple conclusion that can logically be arrived at. Period!

Heard this song perhaps hundreds of times but never live, this is a terrific rendition. I was interested because I once saw a documentary where Ritchie Blackmore was showing how he played this riff and was saying that it wasn't a strum with a plectrum but a 'pluck', so the thumb plucks downward from the top string at the same time as the index finger plucks up from the bottom string (it's hard to explain!). If you watch this video carefully that's exactly what's happening. I've seen lots of covers of this track but no-one plays it like that.

ABC-TV cut Ritchie Blackmore's solo out for time purposes and so that's been lost to time. You can listed to Made In Japan for a live version that blows this one out of the water - pun intended. For the mother/daughter tandem: Deep Purple were in the audience watching a Frank Zappa & The Mothers of Invention concert when someone shot a flare gun up to the under (false) ceiling. It was a huge casino/hotel complex. The Smoke on the Water was the smoke drifting across Lake Geneva from the fire. Purple were planning to record their Machine Head album inside that hall that week, with no one inside, so the album accoustics would have more of a live sound than most sterile studio albums sounded back then. They ended up recording it in a vacant hotel corridor outside of town, putting mattresses up on the walls to prevent reverb. They used the Rolling Stones mobile recording truck studio mixer, which then wired up to from the hotel.

Classic riff. Even "Otto" the school bus driver on the Simpsons hums it.

Another good song by them is Highway Star. They changed singers in 1974 and released "Burn" which is also great.

Anyone else notice that KZbin is now showing two commercials instead of one? That really sucks. When will the 1980’s greedfest come to an end? It’s time!

I notice you gals do lits of live reactions. With very few exceptions, your first exposure to new bands should be their studio recordings, not the live shows. This is an OK version, but it falls flat compared to the Machine Head album versuon.

If you want to hear the last phase of 70s Purple ,'' BURN'' `~ is a really good song but Ian is not the vocalist ,but two were added - David Coverdale and Glen Hughes ..

This is what your generation has missed about Rock. The concerts were wonderful and you didn’t have to re-mortgage your house to get tickets,they were about $20 bucks to get in. It was in the general admission time and they sold as many tickets as they could. Until some people dies from being trampled,then everything changed. There wan no Ticketmaster in those days,you bought tickets at the venue of authorized ticket outlets. The only ticket scalping was on the night of the show outside the venue,and it was illegal.

The guy playing on the keyboards (Jon Lord) was the man talking at the beginning of this tape.. He' aged a bit, but still a cool dude!

Timeless song and superb band, especially live. If you want to see a crowd go wild and really getting involved, you should checkout some of Midnight Oil’s live performances - this from 1994 for instance kzbin.info/www/bejne/oYrUnH-HjtBse9E

Soldier of fortune is the song you guys need to listen to, but deep purple has lots of notorious riffs and songs that inspired hundreds of rock bands. Burn , woman from Tokyo, mistreated, love conquers all, obviously child in time and smoke on the water and many more.

Smoke on the water, was a result of the inversion layer that pulled the smoke down over the lake & the fire in the sky was reflected on the clouds. A few years ago I was walking down to town in winter & I saw a building burning out on the ocean, the next day I seen on the news a huge building in Sydney burnt to the ground, I saw the reflection of it off the clouds 100km away

This was from a time when everyone knew the names of all the musicians and singers in all these bands. While all were greatly appreciated, often there were discussions of which were best. These were truly stupid discussions since every band had songs that are immortal because of these musicians and singers. The best time in music because of the incredible number of great artists and they flourished because the Beatles broke the strangle hold that the record companies had on what was sung, how it was played and what it said. Too bad it seems they music is now so controlled and managed and every one sounds the same, except the rock from Japan. Check out Wagakki Band from Japan to see the difference.

There are a number of songs that are relatively recent, do have good lyrics, albeit, not as many as I wish. Of course you have started country music, so, there are some there. I would like to see you react to Billy Idol, that might be a fun singer for you.
