Deep Purple is a great rabbit hole to follow. Excellent musicians combined with elite vocals. Deep Purple "Child in Time", "Smoke on the Water", "Highway Star", "Lazy" and "When a Blind Man Cries" are few other great songs. Then jump over to the guitarists next band when he formed a group called Rainbow. (Stargazer is a must listen)

Deep Purple was THE BEST! Especially live on stage they blew everyone else away. I'm glad you liked this song, Angela. Many people would have been turned off by the explosive madness of it. But like you said, it's FUN!!!

This song is a masterclass in heavy rock. The changes in atmosphere, dynamics. Music that tells a story and you are never quite sure where it is going.

The biggest opening statement to an album in rock history. The first track on Deep Purple in Rock, released in 1970. They helped establish the genre of hard rock with this song and the album in general. They were all master musicians and this was highlighted on their live album, Made in Japan, many people’s idea of the greatest live album in history.

Yes, the biggest opening statement ever in rock (they open the album with the music equivalent of a nuclear explosion), and yes, Made in Japan is the greatest live rock album in history. Good call!

Very happy reaction, Angela, lot of fun as well!!!! go-go dancing and all that stuff... so great.. Ritchie Blackmore playing the guitar was a genius, lots of tricks, finger picking, the tremolo bar, and rubbing up across the strings with the guitar pick, so fun to see him doing all this skills on his Black Fender Stratocaster. A must see any live shows of the band, thanks to the Web, so please don`t miss any gig. The pioneers of progressive-to-hard-heavy rock ensamble. Stunnig band!!!.

Deep Purple is fantastic. Great musicianship. You can clearly hear how they, along with Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin, were the innovators of primordial heavy metal. But they were certainly more than just that. Just like Zeppelin, they could also do ballads, blues, pop...you name it. They had four distinct lineups in their initial 60's/70's run. This was the most famous second one, or more commonly known as Mark II. Their most well-known songs came from this lineup.

those dance moves makes me happy, sometimes us who didn't grew up in those years tend to forget that people actually danced to bands like Deep Purple, Led Zep, etc, in the 70s

The lyrics of this song comes from some old rock and roll tunes from the 50s, specially from Little Richard songs, like "Good Golly Miss Molly", "Tutti Frutti" (the lyrics from this one says "Tutti frutti, oh rooty..."), "Lucille", "Hard Headed woman" (this one is Elvis'), and "Rip it Up". This song is considered one of the proto speed-metal songs and is a very powerful one. The organ-guitar battle in the middle is awesome, and shows how this two musicians are the masters of their instruments, but also the bass and the drums sounds perfect and amazing in this song. Great one from the best hard rock band. DEEP PURPLE FOREVER !!!

Your reaction to my favorite band brought tears of joy. The radio edit doesn't have the loud beginning and soft keyboard intro, so kudos for sticking with it!! I worked for Deep Purple from 96-02 and Jon Lord is not only the best rock keyboards of all time, but also one of the kindest generous, gracious persons that I ever had the honor of knowing. RIP Jon!

This ultra-heavy version and the slightly slower version with piano are equally great, but the atmosphere is very different in both. This version is high energy and manic in parts, while the one with piano has an almost eerie and melancholy vibe.

Wow, some hard core Deep Purple with the Mark II lineup blasting it out. This was their best personnel group and the biggest reason they are in the RR HoF. Try Highway Star off the live Made in Japan, it's one of their finest performances. Enjoy! 🎵🎸🎤🎹🎶

The Mark II line up of Deep Purple is arguably the greatest group of rock musicians that ever assembled IMHO. You must consider giving Child In Time a listen which is from the In Rock album (but watch the live 1970 televised version of it to get a better appreciation of their masterful musicianship. I actually prefer it to the album version. I'll think you'll love it)

Hi Angela, Love the 'Air Claws'! Glad you enjoyed this track and deemed it Phoneworthy, 1st album I brought age 12 in 1979 was '24 Carat Purple' 1975 Compilation, I can thank my headbanging older sister for that, Great band, Great sound often overlooked in the general oversight of the period with Led Zep & Black Sabbath etc I like all sorts of music but will always have a soft spot for Deep Purple, Cheers Jim, Surrey, UK X Jon Lord R.I.P (Composer,Keyboardist & Pianist)

It's been quite a while since I've listened to "In Rock." I'd forgotten about the wild intro. Most every line in the first verse is a reference to a rock and roll classic, heavy emphasis on Little Richard. The whole album certainly does rock. "Child in Time" is the standout track.

If you're going to try Deep Purple, "Highway Star," "Space Truckin'," and "Burn" are other suggestions. "Smoke on the Water" is perhaps their best known song. I bet you'd recognize the famous guitar rii that begins it. My main complaint with "Speed King" is that I couldn't make out some of the lyrics, as the music overpowered them. Maybe that's just me.

I was kinda surprised you liked it. But glad. Speedking was a drum peddle that the drummer used. It's cool how sometimes a song was written just from a word or even a car, like Highway Star. Hint. Hopefully it'll be on your list. Peace

When I was a young lad, off and on, and depending on when you asked, these guys spent a lot of time in my most preferred slot. DP had some hits before this when they were still in their psychedelic Vanilla Fudge phase and I do really like that material. And they made some excellent records after this line-up. But this is my favorite incarnation of the band, with Gillan and Glover, and this LP was the ICBM that exploded them onto the public; this was definitely not "Hush". I don't think they ever matched this naked ferocity again. Which is fine. Gillan was still unequaled. Richie remained a madman for years after, but he also displayed more subtlety as things progressed. "Highway Star" was a favorite commuting tune of mine and that may or may not have been a good thing. ;) (So, am I a selected winner?)
