Deep rock is imo the premier casual shooter with a healthy playerbase. Im personally tired of all the new shooters that came out that are competitive focused and DRG is a breathe of fresh air even after hundreds of hours of playtime for me

Yea the playerbase was a surprise for me, DRG just quietly has THOUSANDS of players. Enjoyed playing it for sure, I still have loads to unlock too :D

The community also definitely keeps up that atmosphere. On the Discord, subreddit, and even most public matches are very lighthearted and fun. ROCK AND STONE!

When I first started playing DRG, the thing that immediately stuck out to me was the way the classes synergize with each other. From the engineer providing a platform for the scout to reach high up deposits, to the driller and gunner being able to help the entire team traverse solid rock and open chasms respectively. On top of that there's the usual combat specialties such as the scout being excellent for single target damage but lacking crowd control which is something the driller excels at with the engineer and gunner falling somewhere in between. This to me is what marks a great co-op game, something that actually makes you work together and when you really feel the abscence of the respective class when they're not there. It makes you feel so much more connected to your fellow players, be they friends or randos, and that's why I love this game!

Totally, felt the same way - even the 'normal' DPS class like Gunner has the ziplines that we found were essential sometimes. So there's a group feeling to everything, really glad they went with this design over something with a pure support role. Everyone feels powerful, everyone feels useful to the group :)

Quick tips about the goo issue: the engie platforms can be placed on top, allowing easy traversal. The big bugs that drop goo can be stopped by shooting off the sacs before killing them. Hope this helps!

Came here to say this. Glad someone else did already. Most things in the game can seem random or unpredictable at first, but there is usually an audio queue related to it, or clues to what's nearby. It's the sort of thing you learn bit by bit while playing, like optimizing task division with your team (or even Bosco), and adjusting your weapon layout to your playstyle.

you could also use driller to destroy the gooey ground i believe, im not sure as to the efficiency relative to using platforms though but i feel it's an alternative method worth noting

Couple things, that's worth mentioning in regards of the performance pass (the equivalent of season pass in other games) is, that you cannot buy levels. You have to earn them and level it up by playing. Which many games would make a tiring grindy experience. However, Ghostship Games made it so, that there is no FOMO (fear of missing out) factor at all. If you cannot unlock every cosmetics from the pass or the cosmetics tree during the given season, you will still be able to earn those items through other means such as the in-game shop (which again, does not have real life currency option), or by other gameplay elements after the season in question ends. Meaning, that DRG absolutely lets you play and progress the pass at your own pace, not forcing you to dedicate all your time to it, like most other games with such systems do.
@JimJamTheAdmin
@JimJamTheAdmin 2 жыл бұрын
And natural progression of the battle pass also gives you company scrip, used to unlock bonus seasonal cosmetics, so you are doubling the amount of cosmetic unlock compared to a typical battle pass.

Not only is the battlepass completely free, but any rewards from missed seasons get put into the game via the vendors or rare finds in-mission. The same with holiday events, also giving missed past holliday rewards for free. It is NEVER to late to start playing and you are NEVER punished for taking a break.
@CplPunishmnt

Absolutely, there's no FOMO and constant demand for attention from the game. You play whenever you feel that you want to play, and rewards you for playing, even in your own pace. As you described, random cargo crates, cosmetic overclocks and random lost equipment events makes up for those times you weren't playing in a seasonal event or completed the entire performance pass before it ended. Ghost Ship Gaming made Battle Pass the way it should be in the gaming industry; no extra charge to access all items, no FOMO and no demand of constant attention to finish the season before it runs out. Just pure and simple gaming for fun and enjoyment. Also, a developer that actually listens to it's community, does regular community streams where the devs play their own game, fosters a healthy community culture that any other developer out there should be envious of.

I've started DRG around a week ago. There are always people to play with (I had only one game that I had to play solo) in every game mode. The shooting mechanics are great and difficulty is very customizable (you can chill, sweat and have a balanced experience)

Fantastic seeing you review this gem of a game LCTR! One thing I'd like to point out to hopefully alleviate a bit of the grindy feel of the battle pass-esque seasonal rewards (and I do understand you weren't criticizing it harshly to begin with). Anything player does not manage to gain throughout the season goes straight into loot table of random cargo crates and lost gear "events" found occasionally in any of the regular missions! So outside of Deep Dives and Elite Deep Dives player can still, even if more slowly, get all the rewards from previous seasons, which I absolutely adore since it removes the usual FOMO effect which the free battle pass systems in other games usually attempt to create seemingly on purpose. Major shoutout to DRG devs in this regard!

Ohh, that's a really nice system, I had no idea. Yea the devs seem to make some really solid and player-focused decisions on a lot of things. Thanks for letting me know!

While the majority of the enemies that show up are glyphids (the family of spiders), there are a large amount of other families as well which you can see in the bestiary, from flying macteras, rolling qronars, space whale and space jellyfish naedocytes, a handful of parasitic enemies, carnivorous plants and tons of robots. There definitely isn’t an issue with enemy diversity, the higher up the difficulty you go the more diverse the crowds you fight are.

I liked your assessment as a relatively newer player. A few things I would like to point out is the goo and ui stuff you mentioned The goo is either spawned or dropped by goo bombers. If the bombers are a nuisance then that's the role it plays as, a harassing enemy that allows others to group up to melee you. It is a priority target in those situations, and the sacks are the weakspot (weakspots are very important in drg and are indicated by either a mouth or more often the glowy bits). In the cases of it naturally spawning, that's meant for the player to think about using their traversal tools more often. Engi platforms, drilling around it, grappling and ziplining over. Or just mining it away works too Eventually you can get a goo pump gun for driller that can be set on fire for added damage, in case you want to level the playing field As for the ui, it would be a nice toggleable option but I think it's not there to remove visual clutter. The scanners serves it's purpose as the info tool, the shout can be used to highlight yourself, and I can honestly live without nametags since I'm used to it, but it would be a nice QoL change for newer players Nice insights, I also enjoyed the calmer tone of voice. Rock and stone.

You can scream your location and an icon appears through the cave, that way you can see where everybody is without coms, pretty solid review although you missed a few things here and there, like how the seassonal pass works, no fear of missing out and everything is free. But overall a pretty fair review

Been playing DRG since 2018 and it's been able to consistently entertain me and my friend groups since then. There's very little to criticize about the game except the overall direction DRG seems to be heading in. For context, back in 2018 there were very few specific callout voice lines in the game - you had your V-press "Rock and Stone" lines (maybe half a dozen of them), the "see here" voice lines for pings, the "follow me" lines for calling to your teammates, and the "kill this" lines for pinging enemies; a bit of humour here and there, but it wasn't overbearing. Combined with the (stellar by the way) soundtrack, DRG was a very immersive experience - no horror game by any stretch, but it felt very cohesive in terms of its mysterious and tense atmosphere. As years passed, the dev team added more and more specific callouts for various objects and minerals, and unfortunately for the game's atmosphere the voice lines became increasingly goofy and immersion-breaking (never thought I'd hear the phrase "pants mineral" be uttered in a video game, but here we are). The upcoming update in November may confirm this for me, but I feel that DRG has decided to abandon its original tone entirely, which is a shame. Another issue that I felt with Deep Rock is the theme for the past two seasons - the Rival Company incursion - feels distinctly un-DRG. The game is presented in a very Alien-esque industrial sci-fi style, with rugged and purpose-built technology coming up against hordes of bug-like aliens. The Rival Company, however, are a robot faction with advanced tech - a little too advanced for the game's setting - and they stick out like a sore thumb. It's difficult to fully explain this but the robots feel out-of-this-world, and not in a good way. Thankfully the devs have confirmed that the next season (starting early November) will not have robots in it, and I really hope that whatever it is we come up against next will slot into the game world more organically.
@LCTRgames
@LCTRgames 2 жыл бұрын
I can see your point, especially when trying to imagine the game without the sci-fi tech of the robots. For me it all feels fine, but I didn't know the game before that faction was included. The voicelines are pretty nothing to me when I played recently, shame to hear they were more functional before. I think those incidental voicelines are poorly used in many games though, it's so easy for 'comedic' lines to just become annoying or even detract from the tone that the rest of the game works so hard to create. Appreciate the thoughtful comment.
@ikcikor3670
@ikcikor3670 2 жыл бұрын
@@LCTRgames the voicelines aren't any less functional than they used to be, there is just way more of them as the devs decided to make dwarves more humorous in the end rather than not. There is a set of 5 or so voicelines for pinging terrain such as "Guys! Are you blind? Look over here!" and a set of voicelines for pinging default enemy grunt such as "Bugs!" or "Contact!" Those are the earliest voicelines and since then, every special enemy, every mineral in the game and even your teammates have voicelines for when pinged. Heck, even the grenades each have several voicelines for when thrown, and starting next season that will be 16 grenades total with several voicelines each. The game kinda follows the TF2 path when it comes to the voicelines of characters, tho they are more generic to fit all dwarves at once. The fact that they aren't very serious is what the devs settled with in the end and I'd say it fits. Silly dances in the hub as you drink bear, some ridiculous cosmetics to unlock and even the fact that you can see their underwear when wearing a medical gown you get when you don't make it back from the mission work pretty well to accomplish what they set out to do in the end. It's about having fun while shooting alien monsters and collecting shinies so why exclude the characters themselves from having fun. "Mining is hard work, good thing we're dwarves."

I mostly spend my time solo on deep rock (somehow all of my friends just do not like it as much as i do) and I'll treat myself to the occasional spree of public matches. I love this game, really. My xbox one broke (again) recently and you can likely guess what I'll be spending 90% of my game time playing when i get a new series s. The playerbase is friendly and the class synergies are awesome (that dopamine hit when you platform a mineral vein and the scout rock and stones, truly a joyful moment) I've officially owned DRG since feb 21 of this year and I've got about a month of actual time spent in missions, this game always has me coming back and im excited to see what season 3 brings

Rock and Stone Brotha! This video contains too little Rock and Stone, so thank you great Greybeared for the salutes in the comments Oh, and hello ya'll Greenbeards, nice to see you here. Have fun on Hoxxes and don't forget to Rock and Stone! Edit: Also a pretty good review I'd say. Spent a LOT of hours on Hoxxes since we first were able to drop down to exploit the rich minerals and I gotta say most of the complaints mentioned will sort themselves with experience but it's still valid criticism.

Good video, though I am a bit confused about the part where you talk about slowing goo dropping from enemies, as at the time you made this video only one regularly seen enemy drops slowing goo on death, the only other occurrence of slowing goo is in a specific boss fight.
