As an Unreal Engine developer myself having worked on games that required similar tricks, those elements outside of the map are 100% an additional level that can be toggled in quickly to allow for Cutscenes to play, and are likely not replicated. That way, those cutscenes/animations can never be interrupted by say, another player walking into the Forge or bringing barrels around you while you forge.

I think cutscenes interruptions are one of the best parts of multiplayer games, and I'm kinda sad that there's no barrel shenanigans. But why would there be a forge on a mission?

The reason there's a copy of you holding your primary weapon is for the screen it changes to after the mission end screen, the one where you see your points on the performance pass.

Yeah that makes sense. Note that when you complete a mission, the end scene (with victory poses and mission stats) plays immediately after. THEN the client does the loading transitioning back to the Space Rig. That means the victory pose/mission stats scene, and the performance pass point scene with your dwarf standing on the left, is actually part of the mission level (in one of the hidden separated "movie set" areas that this video talks about).. they're not on the Space Rig level, nor are they on a different intermediary level that would waste time with another loading transition.

2:33 I'm pretty sure that's from the screen after the statics screen when you complete/fail a mission. You'll see a copy of yourself holding whatever weapon/item you left the mission with along with the season background.

Oh I should point out, too, that at 3:44 even though the third person shots don't look like there's compressed granite there, that's just a quirk of the mod I used to get those shots (better spectator), but there is in fact compressed granite at the top of that shaft, which you can see in first person.

It doesn't exactly blow my mind per se, but it always does interest me a bunch to know if and where certain things are located out of bounds in a game, and why exactly they are there in the first place. Learning that these are actual areas you can explore, and the fact they are there during missions, it is very interesting!

The mission endscreen area makes sense for loading you into the cutscenes without a loading screen. You do also see the loadout screen if you join a mission in progress so probably a similar reason based on the previous theory. Don’t imagine anyone does a lot of forging while a swarm is coming though!

Makes sense! I suppose the developers just made all 3 of those areas into a single "level" that they could load in for every cutscene, which probably simplifies the whole process rather than loading one level in for one thing and another for another. Interestingly, I've been trying pausing the game with Universal Unreal Unlocker (UUU) during different parts the end screen process, and the camera does just move around the area. It actually moves over to the forge at one point if you use UUU to hide the HUD, and then weirdly there's a version of you that's way way off in the distance standing on nothing. I'm going to have to keep messing around with this even more.

they are there to save load times, when the game ends your physical players body teleports to a spot just to stay in case you are being affected by a status effect, like frozen, that way it doesnt show up when the camera is taken to the end screen space, where a separate render of your character is spawned, that way if your team throws a grenade at you before the drop pod takes off when you end a mission, you wont be frozen or whatever during the end screen i think

I wonder if these entities exist somewhere in the distance of the space rig. Because the pedestal and forge area could only be useful there; outside missions. Does the rig count as a "map" and these holdover entities serve as sort of a default loaded anchor to any map generated maybe? Or the pedestal/forge could just be holdovers not worth the time to clean up and they copypasta'd some code into to something else and left them be.

i would guess it's easier to make a doppelganger do the missing ending animations for some reason and maybe keeping the real thing nearby makes sure everything like the cosmetics load properly.

@-VictorGames It seems like this should exist in somewhere around the space rig, but I looked around and couldn't find it anywhere. I even went outside the skybox with the free cam and couldn't see it. But it still seems like it should exist somewhere in that area, because otherwise yeah the forge being part of this makes no sense. So if anyone finds it, let me know! Maybe it really is still hidden somewhere. Actually, I'll have to check if it's loaded inside the upper part of the space rig, because that part has no collision and could hide it...

@-VictorGames Update: I tried looking for this area around the space rig again and then I realized that the reason I can't find it is that I can't toggle on let there be light in the space rig, because that mod only becomes usable in the caves. BUT, as I was looking for this area, I found something else weird. There is something called the "icon generator" which is a dwarf mannequin that is used to display the cosmetics in the season terminal when you hover over them. This dummy object appears super high up above the main space rig and is super tiny, and when you hover over items in the season terminal, it'll actually change what that mannequin is wearing. Presumably this exists for the same reason as the liminal space rig.

I would figure these do have to exist somewhere outside the space rig, because of how they seamlessly load in and out when using the terminals in the space rig. Also, the pedestal is likely used for when you pause in-game and see your dwarf, and during the end screen where it shows Season XP
