Deep Sea Fishing in Alabama (Deep Water Groupers and Snappers)

In this episode of BlacktipH, we fly to Gulf Shores, Alabama, to go deep-sea fishing for giant deep-water Groupers and Snappers! We began the day by stopping at Captain Kurt's first spot, where hundreds of red snapper would swim right up to the boat and eat our cut baits. After a few hours of action there, we headed even deeper into the Gulf of Mexico to Kurt's favorite bottom fishing spots. After an hour of dropping, we began to hook bottom fish left and right. Kurt, Jake, and I all caught yellow edge groupers and a couple of scamp grouper as well. We got grunts, b-liners, and other smaller fish until the end of the day when Josh hooked a giant yellow edge grouper! Everybody was stoked, and it was the perfect way to end a long day of fun fishing!

Need to be using a descending device in that deep of water instead of a filet knife. Much healthier for the fish. Even need it in 100’ sometimes depending on how quickly fish comes up and how deep you hooked ‘em. Alabamian here as well!

They weren’t even using that large of a sinker looked to be about 8-10 ounces. Only time it makes sense is when you have to use pounds of weights to get down

they're a little shallow imo to be using electric reels but if you want to hand crank 1000' sword fishing just to check baits, you're only going to have time for 3 drops that day when you also factor in rigging baits, motoring back upcurrent, and descent time. think about it. 30 minutes of uninterrupted cranking, lifting at minimum 5lbs of lead just to see if your squid is still there.

@@joranscherjon1500 Using a descending device would be the way to go here... when the barotrauma is so bad the air starts bubbling out of the scales, stomach gets everted, eyes bulging... your best shot at survival is releasing them at depth. Would love to see Josh make a video releasing fish with descenders.

The effects of barotrauma can be pretty gruesome. That's actually their stomach that sticks out of the mouth from the swim bladder expanding and displacing the internal organs. Returning them with a descending device is the best way to go so the gases recompress and go back to their normal deep-water state.

I'm very conflicted with the electric reel game. Yeah they are nice, and they save your arms...but that essentially makes you an outlier on the high end in terms of where creel limits are set by the natural resources department. In essence, you all would have been beat to death after 2-3 of those fish and likely wouldn't have caught nearly as many. It's like how people are using live-scope now and completely decimating populations of fish that they would have never known were there without the tech. Sure the future is great and all but you can see how just a few people taking way more than they should will eventually ruin it for everyone else by the DNR having to change limits to adapt.

You guys should brain, and bleed your fish you keep. Or atleast dispatch them before you toss them in the fish hold. Bleeding them perseveres the meat and it will taste better also the quality of meat will last longer too! Brain, bleed, gill, gut! The fish meat quality will be top notch!

I just did a similar trip off the oil rigs in orange beach al, and We got red snapper, snowy grouper, scamp, blackfin, and yellowfin tuna. We also got a wahoo and some b liners.
