Merbah South East Asia Japan Cable Survey

Remote Operated Vehicle (ROV) did cable survey in Merbah field . Location is 50 nautical miles off Brunei shores. Cable is called South East Asia - Japan Cable or SJC. Depth of the waters in Merbah field is 940-980metres. Pressure at that depth is equivalent to 99 times what we experience on surface.
ROV team worked hard to ensure that ROV quasar was able to withstand that pressure.
Hydraulics has to be topped up in the compensators. Slip-rings had to be changed out. If you look closely at the ROV monitors you will see red blinking worded lines. Those are error messages that the ROV transmitted when it was down at depth. It was quite nerve wrecking for the Supervisor and Pilot/Technician at that time.
The seas were rough. But they managed to launch the ROV to depth. Tide was also running strong, as seen at the angle of the ROV wire.
Congratulations to the ROV team. This is the deepest depth a survey was done in Brunei waters.

Hello there, I’m not from ROV line. However I’ve asked around and found that most company will employ someone with electric/electronics background or hydraulic background; and it’s mostly on the job training to be ROV pilot/tech. There was a course in Philippines but we are not sure if it’s still running. I’ve not heard of any ROV course in Malaysia.
