Thanks for this video Jon. I find your videos very Zen, as in Zen and the Art of Model Building. Especially your Deep Thoughts ones. I learn from your How To and Techniques, but you always make me feel positive about model building, even if I sometimes feel frustrated, impatient, or afraid. I try to learn a new technique, or try a new paint, some challenge on every new model. You help me master those difficult moments, and embrace each new challenge. So thank you for what you do, and your contributions to modelling. Happy New Year to you and your family. May 2024 bring you happiness, health, prosperity, ...and fun!

Thank you SO MUCH for your kind words, and I am so glad the videos are helpful to you. It's a road we're all on, maybe uphill at times, maybe a little rocky going. But we can all encourage each other, offer a hand now and again, and laugh along the way. Thanks for watching and commenting too. Happy 2024 to you and yours as well!

I think you made this video for me! There were, at least two things that apply to me, including being scared to mess up my models, and "Just do it, don't get analysis paralysis". Thank you for the sage advice!

I've recently got into scale modelling & Warhammer as a hobby and it's really helped with my mental health in some ways. However I've recently encountered analysis paralysis and a fear of being good enough which has held me back. I'm not trying to win competitions or impress anyone, I'm just doing it as a creative outlet for myself and a hobby, so I'm slowly trying to convince myself to start doing it again. Watching this video really helped me think a few things through. Looking forward to exploring your content and seeing more from you in 2024. Thank you for sharing your thoughts!

I always look forward to the thoughts. They never fail to ground when its needed (probably need it more frequently if I'm honest). I also appreciate the reality checks. Its all to easy to forget that if you don't do things to the same skill level of , that doesn't mean what you have, or what you do is bad. Part of what is easily forgotten with the phrase "there is always room for improvement" is "just because it could be better doesn't mean its terrible".

Really good video. You are a jedi master lol. On the topic of having fun, as you said, I have discovered that instead of building one model from start to finish, I have about 4 different models all from different genres going at once because working on one model for too long starts to get draggy and stale at sone point. As soon as one starts to feel draggy and like work and Im not having fun anymore I switch to another one and its hugely refreshing, by the tine I get back to the one I put aside its fresh and fun again. Im finding with this approach my fun meter has quadrupled and its almost always fun and fresh. Its an approach I never considered before but now that I do it like this its something Ill probably never stop doing.

Thanks so much for your kind words! I am grateful. :) In my aircraft building days, I often had as many as seven projects going at once. It also meant fast pace - one year I built 39 kits! Now that I've slowed down I tend to keep one or maybe two things going. But having a few kits in various stages really does allow flexibility when one gets a bit boring. Thanks for watching and commenting!

A great start to the new year! I always look forward to the Deep Thoughts videos. Already looking to being more active in modeling this year (especially given my “pile of shame” grew quite a bit last year between 10th edition 40k, Witch of Mercury, and my local hobby shop getting restocks of PG kits). As always, thanks for the content, Jon, and looking forward to the next episodes. 😁

Great video and advice! I'd love to see you take a look at some more of the Warhammer Imperial Knight stuff as i really enjoyed the armiger video from last year. The models do get quite large, but there is a lot of fun drybrushing and weathering potential, and no tiny finicky details to worry about.

"Stop watching KZbin and start experimenting" - the most important words I heard two years ago on one of your videos that kick-started me into actually building something! Jon, with your history of Spitfire builds, could you briefly return to that genre to build the excellent Airfix 1/24 and Kotare 1/32 kits? Perhaps an update of your best kits list?
@JonBius11 ай бұрын
Thanks so much, and I'm glad the videos are helpful. I've built Spits in 24th and 32 scale, probably won't do that again. Just too much plastic for my workspace. I'm still looking at what to build though!

@@JonBius That's a shame - the Kotare Spit is a thing of beauty. Best wishes to you and your family for 2024.
@JonBius11 ай бұрын
@@FinsburyPhil Thanks! I've learned over the years to remember what that great philosopher, Dirty Harry, said. "A man has got to know his limitations." I built enough of those types of kits to realize that they simply aren't fun for me. I realized that with the Tamiya 1/32nd Spitfire. It was an amazingly gorgeous kit, with stunning engineering. Yet I got to the point that I dreaded every moment - the parts seemed endless. It ended up looking pretty decent... but I learned a lot from it.
@FinsburyPhil11 ай бұрын
@@JonBius I quite understand Jon - I was just hoping that I might see one of my favourite modellers tackle one of my favourite kits! In its defence, the Kotare kit is so well engineered that it only has 117 parts! But of course, if you aren't having fun.....
@JonBius11 ай бұрын
@@FinsburyPhil Yeah, I did look at it a while back, and it is a lovely kit. I'm sure when I was focused entirely on airplanes that would have been high on the list. Oddly, I'm leaning towards a jet at this point. "Leaning" is truly the best way to describe it, as every day I get ideas for different things. And thank you so much for your kind words - that really means a lot to me.

@@Akiosama1009 That is a cool plane! Keep in mind though that often the methods for painting and weathering one model can apply across a wide variety of them, with perhaps no more than a little modification. Thanks again!

Hey Jon, I have a question, off topic, but I can't find the answer. What is the substitute for heavy gel? I need generic substitutes as of my disability. I've been trying to build for my friends that have family members that served our country. The smiles you get when done are awesome. Any money saving info would be greatly appreciated. Carry on brother. I just need any way to save money. Thank you.
