When I got back into the hobby about 18 months ago after a gap of 40 years, I spent hundreds of hours looking at KZbin videos, buying the 'right' tools, buying kits that I really wanted to build - but not actually building anything! It was your advice to just get out there and start building that kicked me off - you can't improve unless you start putting plastic together and paint it. I was too concerned about doing it right, but of course you have to make mistakes to learn and grow in the hobby (with just about anything in life in fact). So, thank you for that Jon.

did the same, then realised building is learning, not building= not learning, it's one thing to see and hear how something is done, it's another to actually do it. 👍👍

Sometimes these things are obvious, sometimes they’re not. It’s still good to be reminded that it’s ok to do things that don’t work out perfectly, we need to try more than once, not everybody on the internet is an expert, ask questions, and if we don’t know the answer, we need to experiment to find out. One of the downsides of having so much information at our fingertips all the time is we get the silly idea in our head that we can only do things that have been done successfully by somebody. In reality, we learn by experimenting, even if sometimes it’s frustrating. Lots of times we learn more than we’d planned. The struggle at the end is really about not forgetting all the lessons we learn along the way. Thank you for the reminders.

30:10 10% gang here 🤣. I came here from your gundam carrier diorama and really enjoyed that series! These type of discussion videos are always good for perspective and growth. It's easy to get caught up in comparisons and strangers on the internet telling you how you are enjoying yourself incorrectly lol. Unless you are doing it for a living just do your thing, have fun and try different things. Social media can be awesome, but it can also be exhausting and kind of toxic at times lol. It's always something to work on, but competing with yourself instead of others has really helped me in hobbying and life in general haha. I'm in my hobby painting phase at the moment, so looking forward to watching some of your other videos :D. Thanks for the video!

Good thoughts. I think what drives me in modeling is always doing something I haven't done before. Some new build technique, adding on something that didn't come in the box, trying a new painting technique, new weathering product. I've never been one where I felt I have to perfect something or be the best at it, but I want to know enough to be able to do it.

Hey. 😂. Always great to see a Deep Thoughts video. A lot of this one hits home. As I’m about to try painting up some Tyranids for the first time in a long time (I apparently traumatized myself with a really bad color scheme the last time Hormugants were new - that’s how long it’s been) I’m looking forward to trying out some new techniques. I’m trying stuff from Angel Giraldez’s books and videos so I’m not setting a low bar for myself, but I’m excited to be trying. Thanks for all the words of encouragement and keep up the great videos! 😊 Also, thanks for the other artist recommendations - finally sat down and checked out Juan Hidalgo, Duncan Rhodes, and Squidmar. Getting a lot more perspectives on what’s out there!

purchased an old Monogram snaptight truck kit that was on sale, for cheap that i use as a test piece for anything i have not tried before, just so i can get the prosses down , not to get the outcome perfect, but just to learn the prosses, then i go straight to the model i am building and try it on that , not expecting it to be perfect but to learn.

Forget if you mentioned it once or someone else, but another good place to trial new techniques are areas that are barely visible or unseen areas of a model kit such inner frame, bottom of feet, undercarriage, etc
