It’s so funny when you hear the mindset of “Music sucks now, you have to go back decades to find anything good...” While it’s 100% true that some of the worst music of all time makes enormous boatloads of money now with the ever-intensifying corporatization of the industry & the commodification of radio hits as a big churned-our product, this is a really ignorant take IMO. I do think it’s a huge asset that, now, with access to the internet in its current form, one can very easily access music from virtually *any* era since recordings have been kept (I grew up hopping all over from 60s psychedelic and folk-rock to 90s and 00s hip-hop to 80s-90s punk to more recent electronic, so I’m no stranger to the troves of great music from the past). But the reality is, regardless of how shitty a lot of radio rap or rock may be, there is probably more good music being made in more genres than at any point in human history, because access to the technologies to both produce music AND to distribute it has developed and proliferated and become far more accessible to the average person (not to say there aren’t still financial constraints, for some genres more than others, but it’s true). So you may have to dig a little if you have particular tastes, you may have to figure out where you can be introduced to the music you’ll actually think is good... As more music is produced it’s just a statistical reality that there will be more bad music, more music that isn’t for you, that you’ll have to sift through... But it also means that there are more needles in that haystack. I’m sure we could come up with dead genres where there’s little activity these days... But I’d be hard-pressed to find any where there’s truly nothing happening. In most genres, whether it’s hip-hop, electronic, rock, hardcore punk, folk, reggae, orchestral, metal, noise... There are lots of innovative and talented artists doing remarkable work year after year, on a scale of diversity never enjoyed by music audiences pre-internet. I don’t think we should take that for granted.

I think one of the reasons why so many people believe this is that we only remember the good music. The vast majority of everything sucks and always has sucked. But the bad stuff is quickly forgotten while the good passes the test of time. I know people who kinda believe that everything we heard on the radio back then was Queen, The Beatles, Led Zeppelin and whichever else band they love. But if you actually look at the charts from back then you will find a lot of horrible music that you've never heard of before. Also most of the music people adore so much from the past was not condensed into a few years. Most of the canonically great albums came out over a loooong period of time, but people tend to condense the past into one singular and uniform moment. Everyone who says that music was better in the good old days is willfully ignorant and too lazy to actually go out and look for music. Nowadays there's music for literally everyone and for every taste. But they expect it to be handed to them on a silver platter. It's also really sad how many people relish in this shitty opinion and attitude. I've had people dismiss and mock resources like Bandcamp, RYM and even Pitchfork when I pointed them out as good places to find new music.

Bits of Scott 3&4 directly foreshadow latter-day Scott, and The Electrician is bone-chillingly good 40+ years later; and Climate of Hunter, Tilt, The Drift, and Soused are all brilliant in their own ways. But I think that all Scott Walker ends up at Bish Bosch, that this is his definitive avant-garde statement.

I think Ramshackle Glory’s Live the Dream has to be my album of the decade. There’s nothing particularly special about it, it’s just a folk punk record, but the way Pat talks about mutual support, radical politics and DIY punk spoke to me in a special way back in 2011 when I was still a highschooler. “A punk rock song won’t ever change the world, but I could tell you about a couple that changed me”

I would recommend Bjork's Homogenic or anything by Aphex Twin, both of them influenced Radiohead
