Same reason you'd be interested in getting into any other genre, artist, media, etc. To experience certain emotions in a novel way. In the case of this video Oliver just gave you five different flavors of crushing hopeless. I also personally like to take into account when listening to metal that the experience is intended to be a cathartic release of emotion and that the atmosphere allows for world building (AKA imagining fictional things). As a basic example: When I hear Metallica's "Call of Ktulu" I imagine a gargantuan THING rising up out of the water. My friend however envisions a H. P. Lovecraftian narrative unfolding. Through creating these fictional worlds we allow ourselves to semi-experience the sorts of emotions and thoughts that would occur were we inside that world and therefore experience catharsis. That's all I got...

@@Somewhere_Bagel I literally lost my hearing in one ear (for se months) after an earplug fell out while watching SunnO))). I also had a weird kind of dandruff composed of plaster falling like snow from the ceiling of the Odeon in Hobart, Tasmania. Swans is the only other band to drag me to such deep aural waters in terms of potentially needing hearing aides for the rest of my life. Doom and drone challenge you on different levels - not that Swans are either - and imho make you all the better for the deafening experience.

Neel 2000 why is 85-92 good? Lmao, I've been trying to get into it for years, only recently it clicked, now it sounds kinda cool....but it's seriously some of the most basic idm and drum machine patterns, in an ambient setting. What's the big deal? 😀
@Neel-ff4mn

Nick Garza I never said that I liked 85 92 (I just use the logo 2 catch other RDJ fans like me). I do agree with u that 85-92 is quite generic and dated ever since countless people have been emulating his sound. My fav AFX album is "I Care". But 2 85-92's credit, it makes good music 2 sleep or study to.
@wabby2285
@wabby2285 7 жыл бұрын
Nick Garza 85-92 for me is like a sort of auditory equivalent to the days of Windows XP. Musicians influenced by Aphex always tend to still have an evolved sound, and the unique yet rudimentary quality of 85-92 is exactly why I love it so much. To me it's a soundscape to saturated images of green hills and blue sky wallpapers, screensavers of pipes, and empty shopping malls.

i would highly recommend a sludge doom metal record by Indian called From All Purity. There is experimentation with noise music and it creates one of the most oppressive, unrelenting, harsh, and brutal atmospheres you could ever imagine. The vocals are near inhuman. It all creates a very dark, and deafeningly loud doom metal album

Okay Oliver I took up your challenge. Never been much a fan of Doom Metal but I never really disliked it either. The few albums I have come across in this genre were interesting but I never returned to them. Here is what I thought of the albums you suggested. Keep in mind I have only given them one complete listen. There were two I didn't care for. Trouble "Psalm 9" - Yes they do some interesting things musically here but it is not enough to make an impact on my enjoyment. They sound like a less entertaining version of Iron Maiden or Ratt and I am not a fan of either of those bands. Thergothon - Stream From The Heavens - Whenever I hear music that sounds like this,. especially with these kind of vocals, I just start laughing. I don't know why. I know they are artists who take what they do seriously. But for some reason I can't. It is like watching a child in Halloween mask for me. There was one that I liked but didn't quite love Candlemass - Epicus Doomicus Metallicus - This was such a big improvement over that Trouble album. The ideas were bolder and the instrumentals more emotive. The vocals were cold and intriguing like an abandoned castle at twilight or something. I have nothing bad to say except it still sounded a bit too much like 80s hair metal and nothing was particularly memorable. Two I really loved Pallbearer - Sorrow and Extinction (2012) - Spotify tells me this is 48 minutes but it could have been three hours. For me when I lose all sense of time that is a sign of quality music. This music takes you to a place and keeps you there. Always moving just enough to keep you feeling engaged. For the first five minutes I wasn't sure I was going to like it. But it this music has a way of growing on you and become part of something inside of you. Brilliant. Electric Wizard - Dopethrone - This is exactly how I like metal music. Throbbing pummelling and disorientating. Everything is messy yet somehow it stays together though always on verge of falling apart. I was engaged every second until that moment I suddenly realized that I have been in a trance for 5 minutes. How does that happen? There those were my thoughts. Cheers

Yodh by Mizmor is a great Blackened Doom Metal, it also has elements of drone metal as well, his shrieks and anguish ridden voice just adds to the overall feeling of dread throughout the entire 5 tracks

So glad you had Pallbearer on here. I was thinking what would be the fifth one and this one came to mind. Foreigner is one of my favorites. Also, Dopethrone is my favorite doom metal album and one of my favorite albums in general. Great list. I'd love to see one for mathcore.

interesting that you discounted Sleep as a first Doom metal experience, I came from really fuzzy bluesy rock like qotsa to Dopesmoker and Holy mountain also, this was the best 20th birthday present

Props for including Trouble into the list, as they often get overlooked and overshadowed by Pentagram, Candlemass, Saint Vitus etc., and this is coming from a huge Saint Vitus fan. I think Pagan Altar is another "proto-doom" band that used to get overlooked a lot (given their history) and they are amazing, doom in a purest form: bluesy, soulful, and built on of emotion. And you are right, Sorrow And Extinction is a fantastic album, one of the best doom records that came out during this decade. Cheers.

Just getting into doom, checked out the albums one by one as you went through them in the vid. I liked elements of all of the first four albums for sure but nothing blew me away. Then you got to Pallbearer. And I put the album on. Holy shit. A real game changer for me! Brilliant idea to include something contemporary that showcases a unique take and also an homage to past doom bands.

I want to mention some of the "white" doom metal bands that are very underappreciated: 1) Veni Domine 2) Forsaken 3) Paramaecium 4) Place Of Skulls (Victor Griffin from Pentagram)) 5) Pÿlon 6) Illuminandi 7) Kohllapse 8) Century Sleeper 9) Goliath Particularly excellent is Forsaken's "After The Fall" album - crushingly heavy riffs, combined with really excellent song-writing and dark atmosphere.

Anyone who wants a list of relatively newer bands/records to check out, here are my picks: Primitive Man - Caustic Bell Witch -Mirror Reaper Cough - Ritual Abuse Temple of Void - Lords of Death Conan - Monnos And I just can't leave out Khemmis. Either of their two latest records. Also, I back his choice of Pallbearer but I prefer Heartless to their debut.

Early Proto Doom (even though the lines are blurred) - Blue Cheer/Randy Holden - Pentagram/Bedemon - Mountain/Leslie West - Budgie (self-titled is heavy af) - Jerusalem - Atomic Rooster (more prog-ish) - Bang (superb riffs) - Barnabus (not very popular at all. check out 'the war drags on') If you're gonna appreciate the heaviness of doom you should check out where it evolved from.

Doom Metal is one of my favorite genres of Metal...Very nice list deep_cuts. To extend your list (or even offer an alternate) some of my favorite bands of the genre are as follows; There's the band Conan, from Liverpool (My personal favorite-check out "Blood Eagle") Slomatics, from Belfast. Salem's Pot and Monolord, from Sweden. Lycus, from Oakland, CA. Khemmis, from Colorado. Destroyer Of Light, from Austin, TX. Shroud Eater, from Florida. There are, obviously, too many to cover. I personally appreciate your acknowledgement of the genre PERIOD! Cheers, and hope to see some more great posts!

Just discovered the channel, great work. Dopethrone is probably one of my favourite album. It is so amazingly heavy and crushing, filthy and powerful. You can really feel the hatred they put in this album and it's definitely why it's so great in my opinion. Beside this one and sleep dopesmoker I never really digged into Doom metal. I guess this video is the perfect occasion to fill the gap. Thanks.
