After watching tons of instructional videos. I finally found this one that shows the blind zone concept... THANK YOU! I guess that somewhat explains why it wants to switch to narrow when in shallow water. I will be using my chirp 2 tomorrow and still need to know if the device will force me into narrow beam and if so, at what depth.

Glad you've enjoyed the video! It will switch the beam to narrow when the depth is less than 6ft (1.8m). Also, you can disable the automatic beam switch in the settings on the right side of the screen.
