Deepin OS - Most Controversial Linux Distro

Good thing about this desktop environment is you can have it on other distro's, so if you don't trust Deepin to be completly secure you don't need to run the Chinese distro.

Yeah I have tried that yet for some reason the desktop environment for me is always broken on different distros. And it's always the most simples of issues.

I currently have Ubuntu Deepin installed. It's stuck on 21.10 and 21.10 is no longer supported. I have just recently installed openSUSE Deepin and Fedora Deepin (like yesterday lol) and both are 'deeply' broken (bad pun lol). The Deepin desktop is seriously beautiful and it's practical enough for an average user like me, but I will NOT be using the Deepin distro as a daily driver... it is just a trust factor issue for me. The 23 version will be totally new, not sure if other distros will be able to use it or not.

@@emjaycee yeah like for example on the Ubuntu version. For some reason it has a bug where you can't use more then one screen. And when you try to open the display setting sit crashes and closes. And on the fedora version it has no sound. And on the arch version it for some reason crashes when you try to change the wallpaper. On the deepin desktop you can actually have more then wallpaper which is interesting I think.

@@emjaycee I think the issue might be the that desktop environment is a little bit proprietary hence why it has a few bugs in it. I mean the actual deepin works fine. It's just when you try to install the desktop environments on other distros is when it breaks. Makes me think thats because the code is a little bit proprietary hence why no one has gotten all the bugs fixed.

I've been using Deepin for a while , there is nothing wrong with it, ( nothing weird or malicious code ) it's very user friendly. I've been using Linux since 2007 , this is the best looking one. software may not be up to date , but I like when other distributions utilize their desktop environment

@@morelukeplayz6953 People react the way they've been programmed to react. The maker of this vid and others have clearly stated they have tested it for spyware and found none. And so what if there was? In terms of government doing us harm I get hassled and taxed way too much by the local ones and not hassled at all by the CCP. Might be different if I lived there but not by much judging by how things are at the moment. I installed deepin on a spare laptop a couple of days back and as a non-linux person looking for options , so far I'm impressed.

My distro-hopping Linux gaming machine is an upgraded 2010 Mac Pro - and I was attracted to Deepin for its appearance. Most varieties of Linux run extremely well, and - for the most part - it did. Steam, however, had a LOT of problems with download speed. This was not my first rodeo, so I went through all the standard tweaks with DNS and whatnot. Nope. Still pulling ridiculously slow speeds... Until I changed my download location to China... Yup... It still wasn't great, but it held 1-3mb/sec - about 10x what it was pulling from most other locations. I eventually got frustrated and changed the system back to POP. Shame because it really is a very smooth and pretty system, but if I can't get Steam to behave within 4 hours of tweaking and googling... Well...

Deepin is a beautiful desktop, probably the most beautiful of all of the Linux distributions I have seen. It just is lacking a bit in it in customization, at least the last time I tried it. Also, when I used it, in the back of my mind I was always wondering if any of my information was being tracked... As stated in the video, there has been no evidence of this, but data collection has gotten to be pretty sophisticated...

If I am being honest if deepin was fedora based I think it be a good combo. One you get an beautiful desktop. Two since it would be fedora based it be stable enough but also new enough to actually use unlike it being based on debian. I think there is more of a hype now toward fedora. And the thing about Linux is the distro you pick was made for a certain reason. And for that reason the distro might not fulfill your needs. My point is honestly a really beautiful desktop it's just a shame it's based on debian. My conclusion Is if It was fedora based I think it would be more popular. Plus when it comes to distros I leaned you can either have a the efficient desktop environment that looks ugly. Or you can have the desktop environment that looks beautiful but tooks alot of ram. Which is why I am saying it's a shame. And honestly I think the delvopers of that os make their os proprietary such as their own app store. I am not going to lie there is so amazing apps that they have on there own app store. It's just is a shame they have not really been ported over to other distros.

Linux distro won't use ram if I have lots of the stuff. I thought it was cash, ram, nvme, ssd's. Why would I not want to use ram? Window's/AMD/ASUS runs a 64GB ram disk and a 32GB DDR4 ram drive buffer.

Deeping and Gnome are by far the most modern and beautiful DE I've seen in Linux. Everything else looks from 2010. The animations, the polished feel, the user friendliness everything is superb .

Deepin is an amazing looking DE, it might be the best looking Linux one. Tho, I don't like heavy and full of animation DEs, would prefer to use KDE Plasma if I want transparency look.

I miss the old Deepin DE (Deepin 15-15.7). It was light, simply and innovative. Now it's just an another DE similar to many others.

I've been wanting to install it and try it out for a long time, but I can't trust it for some reason, even if there are no signs of anything happening. They have to be better than windows as far as privacy, but I trust Microsoft more with my data than a Chinese based OS. Right now, I'm on XeroLinux(arch based). It looks great.

Well I wouldn't recommend it as a daily driver to be honest. Since it's debian based the packages on it are on the newest. Second it can have bugs from time to time for example there might be lag in it when opening up the custom task manager it has.

I use debian 11 & noticed debian has been consuming half (up to 4gigs) when I only have chrome open. I cant open chrome & a 2gig VM because it'll hang so I have to use a secondary laptop for anything internet related when I use VM. I have 8gigs as the primary RAM.

@@Kaspersky01 Yea i don't want any company having my data but if i had to choose which one to give my data to, Microsoft or a Chinese based distro, I'd have to pick Microsoft, but yes I don't like windows at all. When i do use windows i make sure to use that one PowerShell script that removes all telemetry and stuff, but that don't fix any of the issues i have with it. In using Xero Linux right now. Been good.

I like deepin Linux i think the desktop environment is amazing. I just don't like that it's debian based not to mention. That when you install it on other distros something is always broken.

My experience with Debian based distros has been quite the opposite. My daily driver is LMDE 5. Once installed and configured, it has been working great (knock on wood). Arch, however, has been the opposite for me. I get one issue resolved, and a few weeks or months later an update will come through with another regression. Some time after I get that resolved, another one will pop up after an update. It’s been like playing whack-a-mole.

I still like the look of the 15.x desktop better than the 20.x desktop. It had the glassy classy appearance. 20 is more stable, etc... but not as pretty. IMO of course.

I'm a light theme fan. One of the best light theme layouts have: the Opera web browser (although I'm using Chrome), Tradingview (with a similar style I would say). I don't remember more, but bad light theme layouts have: KZbin (why the light gray backgrounds all around?), Discord (some of the "moduls" aren't separated well enough: light grey elements next to lighter grey elements isn't good for the eye, and you don't see the transitions on some monitors that well)

Problem is that Chinese law literally requires that the CCP has a backdoor. There's no reason to think that wouldn't apply to overseas users. It's the same issue some have with TikTok.

While Deepin DE isn't my cup of tea and there probably isn't anything untoward going on at present with it, I'm still a bit sketchy on ever using it. My biggest fear of people using it would be that they sneak something in there and it doesn't get picked up until too late. Then your private information is out and about as most users would be lax about upgrading their system. Having your system secure and no telemetry - that's the whole point of switching to Linux correct?

I have never understood why people say Deepin is so beautiful. It looks like an overrated tablet interface. It may look good on a tiny screen but on anything bigger than a 13 laptop to a full blown desktop its ugly. The icons look like something tha Apple would throw onto iOS.

I have no issue with Deepin in general, it just has packages that are too dated for my personal taste. I'd rather use Arco Linux or Endeavour OS with the DDE, Fedora network install with DDE, or Ubuntu DDE community spin.
