Deepseek model has been in news for a couple of reason. How smart a model is determined by ranking on certain leaderboards(math, programming, logic). These leaderboards are dominated by chatgpt (o1 pro)(not chatgpt premium but o1 which is 200$ a month), claude and gemini pro+. O1 pro Is the only one that uses reasoning so it breaks down say a math problem by breaking it down into steps. Deepseek R1 basically gives you the reasoning steps. Claude and gemini won't give you that. They have used this thing called teacher student model where you make a smaller model learn from a bigger model. And like mixtral(french startup) they are using MoE so now 7b param model you dont need nvidia h100 chip(think its ~$15k). It should run on a relatively recent gaming gpu. So they basically a small model capable of what the giants have built and just released it for free. Which kinda spoils the moat for everyone. And the calculus for top of the line model according to anthropic(makers of claude) is you need 100mil to a bill to set up the infrastructure and train the model. Deepseek claims it costed them less than $5.6 million. Anyway wallstreet is mad they let the nerds spent too much money. While its being called sputnick moment(that's more of a ego thing), a better comparison would be when honda and toyota showed up in the 90s with more efficient and cheaper car.

It can do more than Google stuff for you. It can draw inferences, connect disparate modes of thought, create images of any kind based on your cues, etc.

All my coworkers rave about Chat GPT and I just don’t really ever have a use for it. I can write an email faster than I can ask it to write an email for me. The programmers I definitely understand using copilot because it would be helpful to have a computer brain figure out the mathematical stuff.

I've never been impressed by a piece of AI created content. Creating derivative or mediocre art is like hallucinating inaccurate search results or data, it seems masturbatory and at the same time everyone is rushing to make it cheaper and more vertically integrated with society I just don't get it. Its like that john henry song except the steam engine sucked ass and didn't work and then just claimed flawless victory at the end when henry's heart explodes.

No you can read the paper they made a bunch of smart choices in their architecture, did a lot of optimization in the training methodology, and trained on a smaller dataset. Also the price of electricity is a lot lower in China so that cuts it a lot as well
