I do this now. I grow a garden and still go to work. My brother does not work and can't seem to have enough time to work on his garden. My grandfather used to grow a garden ten times bigger than the garden i grow now. He used to work 2 jobs as well as working on his farm. He had chickens and cows he has to feed and water. I was also thinking about how people used to hang out with each other. So i turned my garage into a place to hang out with friends and family. I added an electric fireplace and 4 chairs. I added some colored lights all around the garage to make it look pretty. Then i added a radio to listen to news and music. No TV. It seems like when we have a TV on we don't enjoy each others company. When i was a kid our family used to spend time eating dinner with each other. Now it seems like everybody is buying fast food and eating in their bedrooms away from each other. I learned a lot from my grandparents. The country grand parents always had a few cold storage fridges. They kept much meat and food to feed the family , and they was hunters. They cut up their own meat from hunting. And much meat from the chickens they raised on their farm. Eggs every single day. In the harvest season they would take their extra crops and sell them on the side of the road from their wagon. I rare leave my property. I just go out to buy food, or ride my motorcycle. I never go on vacation. I grow my garden when it warms up, and set by the fire pit we made in the yard. In the winter when it gets freezing cold i stay in , and go to the garage we turned into a hang out. But with the new place we are getting, we are going to build a green house. That way we will have a longer season to grow stuff.

Haven't had a tv for years. In the summer I'm in the gardens or outside doing something. In winter, with the snow and cold, I try to learn new skills but still try to spend time outside. So much healthier. My Mom lives with me and has never spent time watching tv.

I had a discussion yesterday about how I cannot just go to someone’s house to sit and talk. I’m 42 and I think that socialization should occur naturally when helping each other complete necessary tasks. We have so much to do around our own home each day that it becomes inconvenient to leave. We will rush off to help others with whatever they need, such as moving from one house to another or plumbing, or whatever need they may have. I just cannot fathom how people today waste so much time doing nothing at all. It makes me wonder if they even appreciate the fact they have a home since they are always leaving it. We don’t “do” vacations. We use that time to do more around the homestead. Like this year we plan to build a high tunnel during vacation week.

@@tbear4557 Most don't. Look at how many people don't bother to marry. Then with most who do marry, the wife is forced to send the children to public school and daycare to work for a lifestyle, i.e. bigger house, more cars, "better" this and that etc, rather than live more modestly and raise/educate their children themselves. Look at how so many people panicked with this "pandemic" and haven't bothered to see their grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and extended family for over a year. All of the canceled birthday and anniversary parties, reunions, holiday and casual weekend gatherings. My own father in law hasn't ever seen our youngest in person because he's living in fear and scared he'll get sick. If people truly believed God's Word they'd value family and live holy, but again...most don't. Our society's state is proof of that.

My house was built in 1935. It was added onto in 1960. The addition on each side of the square original house has put the fireplace in the center of the house. Originally it was on the northwest side. The south and East sides of the house are covered by a garage and a mud porch. During the hurricanes it becomes obvious why these placements were made. The wind comes from that direction and there are no exposed windows on that side. In the afternoon the sun shines in the west wall of glass doors and warms that whole end of the house. If it were not for the additions, the roof would be all the same level but the only valleys we have are the two along the front porch gable 😊

No tv in four years. We are in our 60’s. When we sold our old homestead I left the tv behind, we didn’t use it. I’d hung one of my paintings over it and forgot about it. 😆Probably cause tv became so intellectually insulting. Now we are so remote our phone and internet is satellite and doesn’t work well if there’s any weather. No couch either. Both of us are so involved with life the only times we sit down is for meals or to rest or read. 🌞 Our days are filled with cooking, gardening and projects on the ranch. Life is good, God is good. ❤️

I asked my husband, more like a statement, “Why do they need to get ‘away’ from THAT lovely place?” After living in the city for most of my life I CAN NOT WAIT to get away from being able to see into my neighbours windows. Peace to you two, you are a blessing to so many of us.

It’s funny that you say that about creating your vacation at your homestead. That’s exactly how we feel. Right after we moved here, we went to our last music festival. It had grown a lot and while we were there it rained and flooded, we ended up just coming home bc our boys were small and it was a mess. Pulled up to the gate and all the azaleas were in bloom. We sat out in the dock and listened to the rest of the festival on a simulcast from the radio in the truck. Haven’t gone anywhere like that since then 😊

I bought my house out of foreclosure. It had been empty for 4 years and had significant damage. My kids and I fixed it up. We have lived in it for 7 years now. I am always doing improvements. I have been turning it into an urban homestead. But when we first moved in I named it. It is called Winter's Haven. I put up a plaque outside near the door that says, "Winter's Haven, Our Home and Refuge". That is how I feel about it. It's our refuge from the tempests and storms of life. I work two jobs, but I luckily I rarely have to leave the house. I have no desire to spend time away from Winter's Haven. I just want to continue to work in the gardens, love my kids, and tend to the animals. God bless you and your sweetheart.

Thank you for this Danny. I’m in my late 20s and I look around at most people my age and I am so saddened. I have quail, and I’m getting rabbits and I have a large in ground garden and about 35 container plants (with more being built). Only a few friends understand it. Most are grossed out just by the idea of compost aka trash as they call it. TRASH! It blows my mind. I remember when one friend got married at around 26 and she called me to ask me how to make spaghetti noodles, so I start explaining how to make noodles from scratch. She meant boiling them, didn’t know how and didn’t even think to read the box! Horrifying.

Your talk today helped reassure me on our decision to make this next move for our small homestead. So people think i'm crazy because i'm home all the time now, fixing my home to be my paradise. Debt free and not paying for wasted space above our heads that we can't use, heating and cooling air in areas i can't use. Interesting story, I'm a teacher at an inner city school and yesterday we learned about the scientist who came up with the theory of Continental drift. The students kept asking me "How did this guy have so much time to come up with this theory?" "Who has time for that?" I was shocked that 14 year olds feel like they don't have time?! I told them "You're 14 and all you have is time for learning and thinking! But instead you're glued to your video games!" I think about the advancements or all the "thinking & discoveries" being lost because people are so distracted. Our children do not sit around and "wonder". Very sad.

Loved this! Although I was watching it on my tv, I turned it off right after and went for a walk with my husband. Then we came in and I made him watch it! Thanks!

If Punxatawney was in a real burrow, he wouldn't even be able to get out to give his prediction. We're buried in snow. I'm home all the time and this is where I like to be . I dropped TV reception in Jan 04. I never missed it. I only have a TV to watch movies I rent once or twice a week, or to watch my own collection. .Danny we still have covered bridges and bank barns up here in PA. I love the old architecture.

I was amazed to read that the covered bridges had to have snow shoveled on them so sleighs could cross them in the old days.

Another great bedtime story...i work 12 hour night shifts, it's like social distancing without trying, I'm at home or work. I'm 59 and hope to retire in 34 months 14 days. Completely gutted an old farm house a year ago...its Come along way but have plenty to do yet. My job owns me!

I live in a 350 year old house in germany. It was never hooked up to modern water or power systems. I lived for 1 and a half years without power, using a handpump for water! Its built for it. It makes sense how it was designed. Its more complicated now that ive upgraded the systems like solar power and passive waterpresdure from tanks etc.. but its not a huge improvement outside of internet and my clotheswash machine. Those are the only modern things i missed. We had a closet on our attic connected to the chimney for hanging meats. Our house is half roof! But we get lots snow here. Its so simple and easy to maintain we do it ourselves. Lol but no tv here. I had visitors over and we were grilling outside but there kids were inside pretending to play videogames(we have no tv here) cause they didnt know how to play outside.

Wow thank you. This could not have come at a better time for me. I have only had a cell phone for less than a year and just started Facebook three months ago. Been seriously regretting both decisions. You just helped sway my decision to discard both very very soon.

Good porch time Danny👍👍 I live in a house that was completed in 1804. It has the huge fireplace like you mentioned. It has 2 swing arms. My wife had gotten years ago the cast iron pot that you cook in from her grandmother. Solid and very heavy. We have cooked in it just to try. God bless you and Wanda 🙏🙏🙏

My cousin and his wife have a TV that is never shut off unless their moving or the power goes out. I think the only time the off/on switch has been used is the first time the on switch was used. Darnedest thing I ever saw.

Were off grid northern mn.... we built our home 2015, 2 story.... shaped like little house on the prairie. .. north side is a looooong slope.... 2 story is the south side... east side has large windows as well for morning sun... and the west side has smaller windows ... wood stove almost in the middle front east side. The room w the woodstove has an open ceiling so 16 ft (living room) and the heat flows up that sloped roof into the upper story. We have drop vents all the way back on the upper south side.... so as the heat flows up the vaulted ceiling to the second story it pushes the cold air down the drop vents into the southern exposure lower floor where the air can be warmed naturally. Our main part of the house all open with large "window" cut outs and doorways to the south mainfloor room where our shower and laundry room is... we have 4x5 ft windows w shelving and led lights in there and we use it as a grow room as well.... More ppl should really think about the design of their home. Not just the curb appeal. Homes need usablitlity and utility appeal first and foremost. Period.
