Hi! I've made myself an uroboros ring from a ram horn by cutting out a flat piece of the surface of the horn first. Treated horns usually have a large hole inside them so it was uneasy to find a spot that would fit my finger by just cutting the horn in half, but I figured that the surface was plenty of usable spots. I thought that the material was more fragile so at first I went very gently on it, but then for the sake of the experiment I made the "tail" part much thinner than the rest of the "body" of the snake. And it went pretty well! It's more durable than I expected it to be, actually seems pretty unbreakable, and the texture of the ram horn looks amazing on my finger.

So to get the inner diameter right all you have to do is get a ring mandrel kit. They usually come with a ring set that you just slip over the persons finger to tell what size they need. Then you take that ring and center it on you piece of antler and trace the inside with a pencil and you have a guide on the inner diameter

Antler is awesome, it and bone are sometimes called paleo-plastic. And you can soak the antler to make it softer and spray water on it to cut down on dust. Bone dust can cause white lung, I believe, but it takes years of exposure.

You will usually stabilize the rings with CA glue which protects the ring as well. Adding a final coat of wax as well will work to protect the ring.

What kind of saw blade do you use to make the cut look so smooth? Thank you
@matthowe27035 жыл бұрын
you dont have to have a smooth finish from the saw. when you sand it down to the parameters you want for the ring it takes care of the smoothness on the sides. thats why he stated you cut it a bit thicker than needed
@usskullhunter4 жыл бұрын
Hey Savannah! Sorry this reply is so lake! Yeah so it is the sanding of the sides that result in it becoming even and smooth on the sides of the ring.

do you have any tips on keeping the inside hole even all the way around when you clear it out with a dremel?
@usskullhunter6 жыл бұрын
Well you can take a wooden dowel rod just a little smaller than the inside of the ring and wrap and glue some sandpaper around it and then finish it off that way. The larger area would make it a lot more even.
@duydinhnguyen62255 жыл бұрын
Put the vacuum tube next to the ring ? When sanding, so it's can suck the dust , if airborne etc it so dangerous , for your lungs.

How long does it take for the dust to settle? How can I do this and keep my family safe from breathing like if they walk in I guess keep door locked? How would you clean up the dust without getting it in ya lungs from tables or walls or floors I was gonna make a homemade grind box
@usskullhunter4 жыл бұрын
So the best thing you can do is run a vacuum cleaner and hold the hose right up to where you are carving. If you can suck up the dust as you are making it, that will go a long way in keeping it out of your work area and out of your lungs. But yes, having a designated area helps. Just as long as there is fresh air coming in the dust will not stay suspended long.

@@jonclemons9681 K well here is my suggestion. It may not work 100% just because weathered skulls are very hard to get white. Dilute the % of peroxide by about half and keep soaking in WARM water/peroxide for a lot longer, like 1-2 months. It can take a very long time for stains like that.

I have a suggestion that might work. I was a cop for 31 years and when I went to the scene of a homicide or any other kind of death, I would plug both nostrils with Vicks VapoRub or I could not smell anything. It made my work easier, plus it kept anything from going up my nose. I hope this helps.
