@arrowheadangler
@arrowheadangler 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, if the lake locks up during season or before we typically don’t get over to the other side. There are no roads or trails over there so we just tuck up behind the cabin. We’ve had quite a few seasons where we haven’t been able to get across the lake. Fortunately we have plenty of land to hunt and can explore even more. A lot of public land in the area to explore that doesn’t get much hunting pressure.

Great video! Very interesting with your use of the boats to get to your camp and hunting. I have a question if you don't mind. I get that your camp is likely private land, is the area your hunting private as well or is it state/public land? As a guy from Florida, where it get's more crowded every day, the remoteness you're hunting is impressive. Gorgeous scenery.
@arrowheadangler
@arrowheadangler 2 жыл бұрын
Great question! It’s a mixture of private and public. Deer density is very low where we hunt, so we put a lot of time in; often not seeing anything, but when we do, it’s exciting! Sometimes the quiet and enjoying the scenery is all you need.

We see wolves almost every year. The deer live with the wolves and we’ve had multiple instances where the wolves have gone through and we shoot a deer only hours after they have moved through. All part of the ecosystem up there. Lots of big bear in the area. We have had some large ones on our trail cameras. Because of how remote we are we have never tried bear hunting up there. That’s awesome! I will be building an additional cabin as well. Not sure what the deer population has been like in Dryden but my guess is similar. If we could get some mild winters I think the population could rebound but with these hard winters they don’t stand a chance. Wolves need to eat and I’m not sure if they’d even make it if the wolves weren’t around. I know they can hunt them in Canada but something tells me the winters are just too hard on the deer. Deep snow doesn’t bode well for them.

That’s funny. I think I have enough video to put something together for that season. We hunted 2 days and left because we had 12+” of snow and the lake froze up. Shortest season for us. That’s the one downside of a remote cabin, the weather dictates so much of what we can do.

Awesome Video!!! We used to camp on Ban Lake just east of Orr! Awesome Deer Camp!!! How are the wolves up there? They have an affect on the deer population where you guys are?
@arrowheadangler
@arrowheadangler 2 жыл бұрын
Lots of wolves but I’m not sure that their numbers have changed much for the last 40 years. They typically follow the deer population which is heavily dictated by the weather. If we have mild winters there are far more deer but we have certainly had some tough winters over the last decade so deer are few and far between. We are fortunate to have a lot of room to hunt with little pressure but the numbers are down. I guess I have a different take on wolves. They certainly eat a lot of deer and take down some of the bigger bucks but it’s their home and I just borrow it from time to time to hunt. It is all part of the ecosystem up there. We’ve actually shot some of our biggest bucks only moments after a wolf moves through. The deer live with them so they don’t scatter when wolves move in. We have the wolves come through every season and still see plenty of deer.
@MNMadeAdventures
@MNMadeAdventures 2 жыл бұрын

@@MNMadeAdventures we are over west of johnson on long lake and i can definitely say the wolves decimated the deer and wolves in the area the lsdt 10years or so. I helped the mndnr do a wolf trapping/radio collar study that lasted 6months and damn near right where my cabin is i can see the different packs well defined boundary lines. Theres 5total packs territories that converge right on the area by my cabin. Over east theres only 2packs that run it and theyre smaller numbers one at the time was 5 wolves, the other was 7. The fawn creek pack and chub lake pack ate in the teens for numbers. Lotta mouths to feed

@arrowheadangler
@arrowheadangler 2 жыл бұрын
Me personally around 140” 10 pointer that went 227 dressed. We don’t get large racks like farm country deer but definitely get some old deer with large bodies. A good buck in the area is 120-130”. We normally don’t measure the racks. The camp has been around since the 40’s and really only deer hunting since the 60’s but they have shot some absolute giants. Deer were never scored but just taking a guess from the photos they had to have been in the 160-170 range. Being that we are just a traditional deer camp anyone in camp can harvest any deer they would like. We don’t necessarily go for large racks. We usually hold out the first few days and look for a mature 3 1/2 or better animal but come later in the season most guys in camp want some venison so if it moves and is legal it may or may not be in trouble.

Yeah deer season was warm for opener. We typically have decent luck when it’s warm though. Yes, lots of wolves in the area. We saw them this year on opening day and the following day but then they moved on. The deer live with the wolves and we frequently see the wolves and deer on the same day. We hunt between 118 and 119 the bucks only areas. The deer numbers have really dropped since the winters of 2013-2014. We are really at the mercy of the weather for deer in the area. Since the habitat is marginal and the predators can get to them on winters with moderate to high snow conditions it’s very difficult for the population to bounce back. That said, we have been seeing an uptick in deer numbers over the last couple of seasons.

It was warm last year, for sure! Yes we see wolves. In fact some of our biggest bucks were shot only a couple hours after the wolves ran through. They live together, and cross paths all the time. Since there aren’t many hunters bumping deer around- it’s probably at times an advantage to have the deer pushed around the landscape by the wolves while we hunt!

Awesome! I enjoy all the same. I’ll let you know on the deer hunt. We usually go first week in November (that’s around the opener of MN gun season). If you are into a remote adventure there isn’t much that can beat this. If the lake freezes up then it’s really difficult. Every year it is a game time decision on whether we can go in by water or have to take a 15-20 mile wheeler ride.

I dont know if ill ever shoot a Buck in the chest again! with my OL' Trusty Remington 760 Game Master .308 i dropped one at about 50 yards with a shot in the chest, he went down in the ditch on the trail side, i waited for a minute popped out my clip topped it off (1 Round) why i dont know...LOL i was all Buck Fevered out..LOL all while i was slowly walking up to him at this point, as im about to pop the clip back in my gun, i raise my head back up to find him, and BAM hes standing rite where he was when i shot him, and before i could even get my safety back off, he bound in through the Christmas tree spruces, where it was so thick i could only hear him crashing through them, when i got over to the spot, there was only hair and not a drop of blood! and i watched him go down hard after i shot him, that buck never stopped running and took me through the thickest s#it, and up and down the biggest hills i could barely crawl up, i followed him for over a mile, and where he took me, it looked like a barn yard of deer tracks, and i lost him there, i never found a drop of blood, i was so mad, he's the only buck to ever get away from me, and my trusty Remington, im 34 now and have used it sense i was 12, but after this, i went rite out and bought a new Remington 7600 .35 Whelen, and i got a small buck with it the next day, and man o man did it do the job, it blew him rite over rite where he stood...Great job and good luck this 2022 season Fellas!

Cool hunting story. I don’t recommend brisket shots but have been lucky with a couple. By far the best shot is behind the shoulder if you can get it.
