Over the course of many hours the Tanglefoot that you apply to the back of the helmet slides down into the trench created at the back carrying the flies with it. Then the stuff flows slowly to the lowest edge where it can be removed easily.
I just remove the old stuff every day or two and apply a little more. This is REALLY a handy feature of this design!
