Thank you! We have horseflies that around our pool. They were just an annoyance until I got a bad bite on my knee. I found this site, spent $20 on supplies and built one with your instructions. 4 different flies came to the pool and all 4 eventually ended up in the trap. This is some great science!

I've looked all over KZbin and this seems to be the best design and the most helpful step by step instruction. Thanks for doing this!!! BLACK seems to be the best color for the ball according to other videos, since the horseflies use infrared vision and hunt for warm. Black is warmer than blue. I did my toule fabric cutting slightly different. I didn't cut it until it was all attached to the hoop. I did your zip tie attachment idea and just started on one side of the hula hoop and worked my way around. When the toule was about half attached I hung it as a cone shape using a temporary center attachment to the cone. This allowed me to finesse the attachment and keep the cone shape. Then I continued around the hula hoop. When I got all the way around the hula hoop, I trimmed the toule fabric vertically from bottom to the top of the cone, allowing a couple inches of overlap. LAST ... Two design revisions that I'm considering (1) I'd like to find a better attachment between the toule and the mason jar lid, so that the toule stays attached while I empty the flies. Haven't figured that out yet. (2) I wonder if clear vinyl would last longer than toule. Maybe you need toule so that it "breathes" and allows the ball to be the hottest part of the ensemble?

Be sure to put your trap in a sunny place and have the ball at least belly height of your animals (3’ or so). Also be aware the tulle will degrade overtime also. I seem to get about a year out of mine in full sun. I also found it a little more effective to have the ball halfway of the hula hoop. Half peering from the bottom and half on top. And size the ball to your hula hoop big hoop big ball for the most effective fly capture. Thanks for a great video! Getting ready to make some adjustments to my own.

The March fly season has started here. I was about to build your trap but have come up with an alternative. I have found that they are very attracted to denim or blue jeans so if you make of have a dark room or large box then inside hang a Bug Zapper (A two blue globe one is best) and the floor will be littered with the dead flies in no time. I have had mine running two days now and I have a feeling that I am getting on top of it. There are less around my dogs crate - and they were driving him crazy.

Loved your video, and your trap design! It's almost the end of the horse fly season in North Carolina, but your video now has me looking for the parts to build one (or ten) of these for next season. I have a black Percheron mare that is tormented mercilessly by these Bugs from Hell. The only way to kill them is to smash them senseless so they fall in the dirt, then grind them to oblivion with a boot heel. Then 20 more come around to see what's going on! Pardon the drama, but I hope they all make a one way flight into the trap jar. Building several inexpensive and effective traps that can be placed where needed is a much better idea than paying big bucks for one that probably does not work as well. Thanks for being so generous with your time and experience, and for sharing your design. Horses everywhere thank you!

There's a squadron of them hanging around my entryway, acting like rats on crack. I hit them with wasp spray and they die screaming. They're breeding in the dumpster on the driveway. I was looking for something like a flea bomb to throw in the dumpster. A flea bomb may not kill them, but I bet they wouldn't like it. Some of the big red wasps around here act sick for about two minutes after I spray them, spool up their wings for a few seconds while giving me the stink eye and then book on out. I think one of'em keyed my truck.

Greatly Thank You for your project!!! I've tried to make one and have a few questions. Is there a ratio on how far the ball is inside the bottom of the hula hoop 'funnel"? and distance from the ground? I have the one I made about 4-5 feet off the ground and the ball is just a couple inches below the hoop. But so far no catch... just wondering if something isn't right
@FensterfarmGreenhouse5 жыл бұрын
Great question. I should have mentioned that in the video but failed to do it/ Just make sure that part of the ball is inside the rim of the hoop. The flies will typically land on it and walk to the top before taking off and fly up into the trap. about 5 feet is right. I have mine near my pool and keep the ball from the trap at the water level. Wet the ball every so often. the fly will land on it for a drink and you'll get 'em.

Well done! I recently had my own epic battle with horse flies and caught the whole thing on video... Anyhoo I just wanted to mention that if you use the black zip ties they stand up to UV and sunlight a whole lot better and your trap will last longer. Have a good one.
@FensterfarmGreenhouse8 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the tip on the zip ties. It turns out that it may not matter too much since the tule (material) doesn't last much longer than a year or 2 so when you replace the tule you have to replace the zip ties. Chuck

I would like to thank you for this video. Last year the horse flys were the worst. I was litterly would stand between two of my horses while they were eating and constantly smacking the horses killing the horse flys. So I have made this a couple of times, first mistake didn't cut the tool round. You can imagine what that looked like. 2nd one I apparently the water bottle was to flimsey and even with the screw it fell right out. Also I wasn't sure how you kept the screen around the jar. Until I watched your video again for maybe the 5th time. That part was a little hidden in your video. Plus when I cut the tool into a circle I made the circle to small and not having much of a cone shape. Well I'm sure I'll get it the 3rd time after all the 3rd time is a charm. Lol. My only dumb question is what is the purpose of cutting the tool from the edge to the middle?

Thanks. I use several of these around my property these days. I cut the tulle from the bottom to the center so that I can create a cone shape with to funnel the flies from the hoop into the jar, Hope that helps? Chuck

I am so scared of these things it's sad!!! I can't even enjoy my pool, nor can my kids because they too are scared after seeing me flip out. I have everything to make this first thing tomorrow. do u still have any that bother you before they make their way to trap, or is this something that attracts them right away? I've almost drowned myself because one was circling waiting for me to pop back up. lol its ridiculous

You will probably have a few still make their way to the pool, (depending on the fly population in your area) before they find the traps for a while but at a point they will taper off. Last summer we only saw a few after a weeks worth of the traps deployment. I placed them between the woods and my pool about 20 feet from the pool. I have 2 of them. BTW, you will probably need to replace the "tulle fabric" every year. It gets brittle in the sun. Chuck

Yeah, but what is the hula hoop for?🤔

After I hula hooped in it for about an hour I used it to funnel the bugs up into the jar! Chuck

Good design but the important stuff is skipped such as how to measure the tulle needed and the zip tying would have been good to see and also the putting the tulle in the jar. You can skip the clipping of zipties

We'll...it was good but kind if a letdown. I would have loved to see you got a bunch of flies in a short period of time. After investing 21 minutes into your video I was just looking for that payday! Seeing those nasty things cook would have brought me a lot of satisfaction me 😏Please let me know if your post results 😃

Great idea, but you didn't have the camera at an angle that enables the viewer to see exactly how you attach the cone to the jar! That's the part I'm having trouble with. Frustrating that I can't see it in the video!
@FensterfarmGreenhouse6 жыл бұрын
Stephani Guttery sorry about that. Slide the jar rind onto the toule first then work the funnel into the opening at the top of the cone. Underneath the toule so that it presses it between the funnel and the jar when you slide the ring up and screw it to the jar. Hope that helps? Chuck
