I think this may be the best series MeatEater has done in a long time. Great to not only see different ways people hunt deer in different parts of the country, but more importantly it shows how most of the time when you go out, you don't actually kill a deer and often don't even see a deer. Great job Mark!

Well done series. It was cool seeing different styles of whitetail hunting in the different states and terrains. It’s fun to watch them get a deer but what I like most about Meat Eaters is they show the whole reality. No, your not always gonna get what you go out and hunt for, but that’s okay. You learn and you carry that knowledge with you on your next hunt. Can’t wait for the new season 🤘🏻

That's why tracking is the best approach. You immerse yourself in nature and typically hike miles. The hard work, woodsman skills needed and the fact that you don't need leases, blinds, stands and scent products makes it the most difficult and purest form of hunting.

I felt the pain on the bucks in the corn and not being able to get a shot. Couple years ago I had the biggest buck I've seen in my lifetime(at least 14 scorable points I counted easily, and would fit right in among that wall of mounts in this video) get pushed by another hunter walking in, this buck came running across the field and stopped broadside 25 yards in front of my stand and STOPPED directly in front of the only piece of impenetrable brush I hadn't cleared out, I made plenty of shooting lanes and I didn't wanna get rid of all the cover so I left it. The buck stopped in front of that brush and didn't move for minutes, and I spent that entire time at full draw, and every 15 seconds that passed I remember thinking "damn, wish I worked out more" because even with let-off, holding a bow back for long periods of time is exhausting, especially while trying to remain as still as possible. I kept waiting for him to take 2 steps further and that's all I would've needed, but he never did. After 2 or 3 minutes of him standing there, he finally winded me and took off. It was such a bitter sweet moment. Biggest buck I've ever seen in person, while on a hunt, so it was great to see one. But to be that close and not pull it off, it sucked. Then came 2nd guessing myself, wondering if I should've tried to shoot through the brush and maybe I would've got lucky. I'm thankful I didn't, because at the worst, I'd wound the animal and hate myself for it, at best I'd probably just lose an arrow. Wasn't worth it. It's an experience I'll never forget.

I see ol Tom let Mark come out during the cream of the crop week of late January! Not to say you cant kill a nice buck then, but this would be way more interesting if you sprinkled this into the 'one week in November' series

I feel it. Last fall, 2nd day of bow season, I’m in a very small pop-up blind. I have a buck come in to around 15 yards just quietly browsing. But, he’s over my left shoulder enough so I can’t turn without making too much noise. Damn frustrating.

I can certainly appreciate outfitters like this and the trickle down effect that Mark mentioned. However, if I were to pay thousands of dollars to an outfitter to walk out to a blind and shoot a big buck I would not feel that I had personally earned that deer. I have nothing against private property hunting but unless you are taking an active part in the managing of that property and building that deer herd I don’t know that I’d feel like anything more than a tourist at a theme park.

I have no quarl with outfitted hunts for nonresidents or people with pockets deep enough to buy anything they want. But for me going out discovering what the deer are up to, what deer are around, and executing a plan and hoping it all comes together. So much of the hunt gets lost when you show up and a guide tells you where to sit......

I dont understand the mentality on not going on an outfitter hunt. If you deer manage on your property, or hunt on your buddies deer managed property, you're doing the same thing they do, but on a smaller piece of real-estate and have lesser chance. Me, I'm looking for the experience, I'm looking for the story, I'm looking to bond with my son, and pack the freezer with natural meat. Just my opinion.

I hate how hunting has changed but love it at the same time, it's very sad seeing everything being about money for a lease. Even those with very poor hunting lands won't let you do some work for hunting permission. Can't even get squirrel hunting permission anymore because it's leased to deer hunters. Very sad
