Mark heads into the public lands of Arkansas with Clay Newcomb to learn the backwoods approach to deer hunting of working saddles and still-hunting. He’ll get one day to study under Clay and then he’ll set out on his own to kill a backcountry buck himself.

That’s entirely based on what specific criteria. How much they do for conservation and hunting education? That’s Steve-o and Cal. Best to listen to while trying to sleep? That’s Clay. Also best stache. Best hunter? That’s Remi Warren (though he isn’t technically part of the crew). Examples go on and on, ad infinitum.

@@majordudley35 I'm from Pennsylvania, but I've been to Arkansas. I can't say the exact location but those are the Ouachita Mountains. Clay has also previously said that the Ouachitas are where James Lawrence grew up and still lives. I believe the exact location is in a national forest somewhere.

I’ve hunted Francis Marion National Forest in SC for 20 years. I’ve got a good collection of mature bucks I’ve taken from this not target rich environment. I am so proud of those 14” 15” 8 points and one 10pt. I actually hunted those deer. We walk in with climbing stands and climb high up to see over the coastal scrub. This is for real hunting. I love love this content! Thanks for sharing a true experience!

I just struggled through 5 days of unsuccessful elk hunting here in Idaho and I have to keep reminding myself that success rates are realistically in the 15% range and that this was only my 2nd season elk hunting and 4th season hunting overall. Gotta work through the struggles and keep soaking up all the knowledge and information I can. One day it’ll come together and I’ll be packing a big bull out of the mountains and even then I’ll still have a lifetime of struggle and learning ahead of me.

There is this interesting dynamic that happens with older hunters and anglers. They feel more emotion and value out of seeing the younger generation carry on their tradition. Even to the point where it trumps their own personal hunting and angling endeavors. I see this in my father every time me or my brother gets a buck of any size. The same when he helps one of his 8 grand children catch a fish. He's more happy in those moments than when I saw him get a 140 inch black-tail, or his 9lb large-mouth. The same thing can be seen and reflected in James's whole reaction in Mark's success, even to the point of helping him skin the buck and quarter it up, all with a huge smile on his face. James had just met Mark as well, it shows that synergistic woodsman kinship fueled the comradery. There is something within the mind, heart, or soul that provokes the older generation to feed off and ultimately relish the success of the next vanguards. Weather you believe in creation or evolution, that's a beautiful trait we have woven into our DNA and it's quite admirable.

I loved the video and agreed with all of it , I have 50 years hunting white tails and would like to share information with all of you, remember this the big bucks sleep on the top of a ridge or on the edge of water, so you can’t sneak up on them easily, when you are walking hunting ( still hunting) take two or 3 steps then stop and glass , always watching your wind , i could go on for hours lol the only thing I seen you do wrong was grunt while walking, you while chase away does and if the big boy comes to you it will be down wind and you will never see it , ❤️everyone good luck hunting, if anyone has questions I’ll try to help ✌🏻

As a fellow Michigander, I'm pretty sure my Uncles and your Dad are programmed exactly alike. They've hunted northern Michigan deer for 40 years and usually come back with talk about how beautiful the woods were, not about all the deer encounters they had. Their walls have a few repectable 8 pointers, but mostly are filled with smaller 4s and 6s, but they are great story tellers and the tales behind those 4s and 6s are priceless. Great series Mark! I look forward to seeing the rest.
