This is peak Def Leppard. Young, hungry, and not to be denied. Played every show like it could be their last. Def Leppard's effort & determination has always been the reason for their success. It's no coincidence that they hit big. They've always gone at it like there was no other choice.

Wow! Three things that caught my eye here : 1. Steve Clark is there playing with the band. 2. Rick pre-car accident, with 2 arms. But most alarming was; 3. Phil with a top on. 😆 This is an amazing gem!!

Once Phil touched his top unknowingly after his solo and it caught fire. That's why he doesn't put them on while he is playing guitar anymore. For real!

On Nov 15th 84, I ripped off my arm in a machine at work. I was barely 19. I was a drummer in a band. My arm was saved, and I practiced my ars off to recover. I changed how I played because I lost all my finger tendons but they took wrist tendons and moved them. I relearned how to do it. On Dec, New Year’s Eve, 84, I heard the news about Rick’s car accident. I thought of him, and I was devestated for him. I loved Def Lep, especially his drumming. They put his arm back and I waited to see if it took. I was sick to my guts about him. Then the news came that he lost his arm. I was so busted for him. I didn’t know at that point if I’d keep mine yet. I was fortunate. He too was fortunate though, because the boys in the band stuck with him. He is a success again. I was never so happy when I saw him live, for Hysteria.

@@trillrifaxegrindor4411 how’d it work out for your grip? It’s tough trying to just hold onto the stick at first, eh? Man, I tried tape, tree sap, I made sticks on my lathe, I custom carved sticks….it all helped me emotionally to keep going. I always like to envision all of the various contraptions that Rick Allen must have gone through. I read that it was actually Mutt Lange that came up with many of the ideas, and who would never let Rick give up. Now THAT is a producer that truly gave a crap. Unbelievably decent guy. Anything you recall that was a huge moment for your drumming recovery?

Take a minute to admire Joe’s perfect better than on the recordings voice, Collen’s licks, Allen’s two arms, savages bass lines and on stage performance and Clark’s riffs and solos and whatever the f*ck he does to get that sound. Ahh yes , the fallout of Mutt Lange production . While I take nothing away from the energy and tight performance part of it , it's obvious these guys knew right away they would have to use padded backups , keyboard supplementation , and triggered samples for live replication of the recording. If I had a time machine I would love to go back to 1983 and see Def Leppard play live. I did see them in Philly at the Spectrum in 1988 which was my 1st concert when I was 15 but i would have loved to see them with their earlier stuff even High N Dry. I was only 10 when they were touring for Pyromania and there was no way my parents were taking me. My parents hated rock n roll. God my dad hated all my music. I have so many old pics from 1984 to 1987 when I am wearing my Union jack sleeveless shirt.

Saw this tour for my first concert, Mom got my brother and I tickets while we were in school. It was an incredible experience. They were pretty much exactly as this. Saw lots of other shows, played in bands, only band that came close was Pantera right after vulgar display came out. Pretty lucky. This is a much better view than I had then, from the balcony lol.

Rick Allen is a beast on the drums. Even 2 this day with only 1 arm.
@FireMinstrel

You can tell just by listening to his fills how many arms he had at the time. If he was doing a lot of fast rolls across the set, he had two. If he was doing syncopated snare hits, he had one.

Def Leppard with Steve Clark and Rick Allen before his accident (not that it stopped him!) and they are absolutely kicking ass in this show, it's just so satisfying to see. I was only 13 in 1983 when this was recorded so I really didn't have much chance to see and appreciate a show like this in person. So glad for this recording.

Magnificent choir of exceptional musicians, because all singers, capable of superb harmonies, exceptional melodists and composers, surrounded by a drummer of remarkable precision. I grew up with Def Leppard, and will never tire of listening to them. When we see the ego quarrels in certain groups, the solidarity between these musicians and their drummer, following his misadventure, commands respect. Long live Def Leppard!
