Pricing is not just about the end product, it's also about all the time, effort, failures, and overhead in the prototyping of that product. Love your stuff man.

I've been making dies to make medals and tokens for about 20 years, going from hand engraving to pantograph, CNC mill, and now a fiber laser. One time I engraved a flat plate with an elongated penny design and ran it through my rolling mill with a penny as a proof of concept and it did work, but engraved rollers would obviously be the way to go. As for the smaller outboard rollers on your vivor rolling mill, any machine shop should be able to make those for you. Any coin roller who tells you that this is patented and secret is blowing smoke. The first penny roller came out in 1893 and the concept goes back to the 16th century when several countries used roller presses to make circulating coins. I have a fair amount of experience in this area, if I can offer any assistance, drop me a line.

Cool stuff. I smashed pennies all the time...on my way to school I would put pennies on RR track and on my way home I would pick them up very smashed. Fun times growing up.

The joy you showed when the first penny came out was great. Half an hour ago I had the same joy when my months long project came out as good as I dreamed it would (short video coming out soon, and long video in a week or two).

Penny Fact: If you stack 16 pennies on top of each other it makes 1 inch. If you lay 16 pennies next to each other in a line it makes 1 foot. ➡➡Ornablanks: ornablanks.com/products/ornablanks-metal-laser-engravable-ornaments-5-pack ➡➡ Use "HAMILTON10" for 10% off your order!

That sounds like one of those wisdom quotes. I am going to use it when the opportunity comes. Maybe it is a quote, but English is not my native language, and I haven't heard it.

I recycle plastic by hand and I always eyeballed these wire rollers wondering if I could use them with molten plastic. Plastic works surprisingly well with many metal working tools. I figured if I could etch into the rollers then I could "roll mold" small parts. Maybe even set up an extruder to do it automatically. Tho, I also figured a pasta or clay roller would work too. Either way I haven't really had the money to try these things until recently. Probably not going to try it for for a while because I have some better experiments to run but I really hope that other people start getting into this. Then I can just have somebody make me what I'm looking for. Thank you very much for this information and putting it out there. I'm so glad someone tried something like this.

@@cybyrd9615 May I ask? If it's about plastic then I would love to talk about it. I've been recycling by hand for probably about 12 years now and I've got stuff in my KZbin channel that no one's tried.

I'm adding this to our list of projects for my local makerspace, we had the same idea for a makerfair and we wanted to be able to offer guests the chance to get a selfie at a photobooth and engrave it on a penny. This will save a some money on buying blanks and making something unique and cool in the process. Thank you!

The sound is so much better with that mic. Upgrade well worth it. Though I'd prefer straight to camera delivery with lots of demo roll while carrying on voice over, rather than walking back and forth in front of the green screen. But opinion are like butt holes, we all have one and they are not all the same.

We are a smashed penny family, recently infected my 8yo granddaughter! 🥴 It looks like you could get 4/5 designs across, then you would need to replace the roller. Did you happen to ask them about the roller replacement cost? Their product assortment is so wide, I suspect they do not manufacture them. Perhaps one of the maketember items could be a loading platform with 4/5 lanes that would sit in front, with a little penny pusher stick! 🤓 Great project, way outside the box!

@dian3145, you could have 4/5 across and 2/3 around. That would make 8/15 designs in one roller.

Hamilton, when you say 15 hours of filming, is that the total amount spent on the actual making part of this process? In the video you said you spent days trying to figure this process out. Is that all encompassed in the 15 hours? Or do you have extra time in this project that isn’t in the numbers? Love your transparency!
@HamiltonDilbeck
@HamiltonDilbeck 11 ай бұрын
Great question! Recently I've been trying to just time the actual filming and editing. That bleeds a little into the learning phase- but I try not to account for all the learning. I've found that I can't really time that. If I did this video would have taken well over 200 hours to get to this point. Learning software time and all over the last few years.
