Amber jacks are mind bogglingly powerful. I shot one with my spear gun once in Baja at 90 feet deep on the lip of a 300 foot deep underwater canyon. He headed straight down into the dark dragging me behind him like a kitten on a string. All I could do was hold onto my spear gun and add air to my BC. Finally stopped him, but then he headed back up toward the surface still dragging me behind. Rapid breathing saved my lungs and he finally lost his juice back up on the flat. He was 80 lbs and fed a lot of the local people. I wasn't sure for a while who was going to kill whom.

We would go offshore fishing and I would always catch a HUGE amberjack while fishing for king fish here in Texas. My mates would get so mad because it would take almost an hour to get them up to the boat. Rarely do the survive and eating them is not popular. But, boy, they put up a huge fight and I would never go without a rod belt and 300# steel leader is a must. Thanks for sharing.
@mattatherton13238 жыл бұрын
lol at these dudes saying to loosen the drag or fight the fish longer or to use different setups or to stop yanking the fish. what do you expect the guys to do? their options are as follows: 1. light drag which allows the fish to run into the wreck(no go) 2. fight the fish longer which allows sharks and goliaths to grab the fish as well as decreases survival rat after release due to exhaustion (also a no go) 3. fight the fish as they were to minimize time on the wreck, minimize time in the strike zone of shark and goliath, and minimize fish exhaustion for a good release rate
@Sstyle28 жыл бұрын
this rod and reel broke not because of the fish size, it happened because this guy had no idea how to fish. someone who is a decent fisherman would of noticed after one break off that the gear and jigging strategy isn't working. you should use wooden reels not stella

It is very hard to catch a 50 pound fish in those conditions. I understand. And that is why I use 2 rods: 1 with a heavy reel, like an 80 or 130 with a heavy rod on freespool, then a jogging rod to work the jig. Once the fish strikes, the jigging rod is not in use and you can horse the fish up. Amazingly, 60 percent of them still get away
@reeldistractionaction19728 жыл бұрын
anyone who posted, "let off on the drag" HAS NEVER FISHED FOR AJ'S! Matter of fact, you have never fished, if you havnt lost lots of jigs before you brought a reef donkey boat side😉 they are the most powerful fish in the ocean and dive straight for the reef where they then break off any line you can throw at them. and I'm pretty sure the biggest aj is on the reef with a gold tooth selling everyone's speed jigs for 20bucks a pop.

First of all don't comment on something when you don't know what your talking about. People who watch this these videos most likely know about fishing so when they read your comment they know your a hater. If you knew what you were talking about you would know that the hooks would rust and and even if they didn't they would still be able to eat.
@petesampson42738 жыл бұрын
Edward Hoff Well, Ed. I have been fishing for longer than the combined age of the three guys in the video and I've learned quite a few things in that time. One of those things is that, if one breaks off three fish in a row, one is using inadequate tackle. Also, a bare hook is usually pretty easy for a fish to shrug off but, and I admit I didn't get a good look at exactly how they were rigging their jigs, a big chunk of plastic lodged in the throat will kill a fish long before a hook has a chance to rust through. Breaking off fish after fish while using an artificial lure strikes me as being just a bit irresponsible.
@XciTeChiKa8 жыл бұрын
+pete sampson the plastic isn't breaking off its just the hook which is attached to a piece of nylon cable. So basically it's the hook and a piece of rope in the fishes mouth.
@herkusr018 жыл бұрын
+XciTe Chika and it's also saltwater sooo it's gonna rust out quick
@marcfouche39948 жыл бұрын

No it's because he has 400+ yds of line on that spool and he's trying to land the fish with 20 yds. His drag is far too tight which is causing him to pull hooks and pop knots. It's not the gear it's the operator. Go and watch the Kiwis land 60+ lb yellowtail kingfish (amberjacks) on 50lb tackle.

FROM THE DESCRIPTION: "We are fishing a shipwreck in 230ft of water with a 4-6mph current. There are lots of sharks on this wreck that eat the amberjacks. Once we hook up to an amberjack, they immediately swim towards the shipwreck for safety (thus breaking our line). Giant bull sharks immediately start chasing the amberjack the moment you hook it. We have to fish very heavy drag to prevent the fish from swimming into the wreck. We have to retrieve line as fast as possible to prevent the sharks from eating the amberjack. This is a very challenging environment to land fish. "

You guys dont care wasting lures in the ocean?? Looks like many fishes swims around with hooks in Its mouth
@patrickharris46415 жыл бұрын
Most hooks come out within hours and if not they rust out in a few days. No hooks can stand up to saltwater. Sadly losing fish and breaking off is just a part of fishing though
@fletcher40985 жыл бұрын
Yeah a hook wouldn’t last that long in saltwater. And even if it did it would hurt

Gardy Philemond 20000 Stella’s with around 45 lbs of drag, probably a 50-100 class stand up spinning rod, 67 kg braid, and probably a a 200 lb leader connected with an FG knot, with a crimp connected to the jig. Any freshwater fish would struggle to handle this
@Dovahfinn246 жыл бұрын
You guys got a fish finder right? Why risk your gear in the wreck when there are probably tons of places to hit amberjack. I've been fishing all my life and I understand that you can't really give much drag when it comes to fishing a wreck but why fish a wreck when you can fish yourself a good set of rocks and have better drag to ensure that you don't lose gear.
