Defects Can Be A Great Feature! - Wood Turning

Originally thought to be FOG wood (Found On Ground) turned out to be American Elm. Super tight and dense grain, this came with a wonderful bark inclusion which some might call a defect. For me, it's these "defects" that can make or break a piece. Finished in Feed & Wax.

Phil, I've been slowly rehabbing for some time now, gotta stretch out these "golden years" LOL. So I have to tell you how much you have helped me keep up the good fight. I look forward to your videos, and really do admire what you can do with a piece of wood. You've changed my opinion of what "firewood" is, and watching the new and old videos is a high point in my day! Thank you, and God bless! Rick

I met a nice guy today at a craft fair. We talked shop a bit as I looked over his pieces. He had all if them labeled with the type if tree except for one that I happened to pick up. He told me it was fog wood, and my eyebrows perked up. When I said I watch videos on KZbin where someone uses that term, he said," Is it Phil Anderson?" You are famous, Phil! This happened in River Falls, Wisconsin. What a small world it is, and thankfully its full of interesting bits of wood for us to find and play with.

A note on Elm, if you are trying to figure out if that's what it is, if it's got any life left in it, it has a distinct smell when it's worked. Especially sanding will bring it out. It smells like a dirty barnyard. It's not really too bad, but it does make it Elm. I do most things green, so it's a more potent aroma.

N-i-i-i-ice! And quite timely, as well. I'll be getting a chunk of this wood ready to chuck up a bit later today and this shows me what to expect. The log was found along the county road up from the shop a ways, where County Roads left it while clearing storm damage. It was brought down in the ice storm 2-and-a-half years ago and the date I wrote is when I sawed it into sections. It's just about time to go back and get samples of leaf and flower/seed for a definite ID. I'll let you know when I do.

Thank You Phil, Thank You Dave at Calmwood Creations... Phil you did a good solid turning today with a nice piece of FOG wood. American Elm is great looking wood and bark. I do not think I have dealt with American Elm or I am just getting forgetful (probably both). The logistics of turning Phil is part of the fun of watching. You turn, you run into unexpected whatever's inside and than your strategy changes. ALWAYS FUN & until next time Phil.... TM

I enjoy the other things to but learning a new craft is just a different kind of fun. I did copy you and I ordered a set of the Benjamin’s best gouges and parting tools. Its so cute! I know you dont like the shape but I love it! It would look awesome with a spider plant or such in it. I understand why you dont sell your stuff, thst would be so complicated i would think, but its a shame you dont because your stuff is so unique and you've done so many pieces i would love to own. Keep it up Phil!

See, I seldom think of how a piece could be improved by adding something like a plant to it, Karen. Great idea! Thank you! 😃

I started turning in the 80's at a woodshop on an airforce base in England. There was a master turner who started teaching me the basics. I transferred stateside and learned on my own. Then along came youtube. I'm still a long way from being a master turner, but videos from you and a few others have really helped me be better. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and techniques.

Dave, I learned to turn from watching videos. Hundreds of them! It still took some perseverance but it all finally clicked. As long as you are having fun, you are way ahead of the game! Thanks for watching and for your comment! 😃

Hi Phil, thanks for the video, that is a really nice piece and the defect is just one bit that makes it so much more interesting, always like the bark and defects, great job. All the best to you. Regards Jim

Great! You said you wished we could feel how nice and smooth it is so I decided to try. All I got out of it was a bunch of fingerprints to clean off my TV! The sad thing is that you probably believe that. Honest, Phil, I was just joking. I’m not really as stupid as people give me credit for. 🤔🤨 I can’t say that I’m crazy about the overall shape but it’s still a beautiful natural edge piece, my friend. Great video!! 👏👏👏 Take care, …..Gord

I'm with you on the shape, Gord. Does that mean neither of us are crazy? Now get out the Windex! Or, maybe you guys just use snow, I don't really know. Thanks, buddy! 😃

A good result, Phil. All our British elms were killed off by Dutch Elm Disease. The grain was similar to English oak.
