in simple terms, a regiment is a permanent unit(battalions) of an Army. e.g Madras Regiments, Kumoan Regiments, Bihar Regiments, Punjab Regiments. each regiments has atleast 2-3 battalions. some older regiments have 10+regiments(if i remember it right) the heirarchy goes like this. smallest unit of an Army is Platoon(commanded by a lieutenant or a captain) a few platoons make a Company ( commanded by a Captain or a Major) a few companies make a battalion (commanded by a Lt. Colonel or a Colonel) a few battalions make a Brigade (commanded by a Brigadier a.k.a 1 star General) a few Brigades make a Division (commanded by a Major General a.k.a 2 Star General) a few divisions make a Corp (pronounced 'Kor') (commanded by a Lt. General a.k.a 3 star general) a few corps make a command (commanded by Lt. General a.k.a 3 star general) All the commands in the entire Indian Army are commanded by The General a.k.a 4 star general. He is also the Chief of the Army Staffs, the highest Rank in the Indian Army. of course, some might say there is Chief of Defence Staffs(CDS) which is also a 4 star General created recently by Modi Govt, and he is above the Chief of Army Staff. yes, he is senior to COAS but CDS is not the direct commander of Indian Army. He is kind of a Political figure(perhaps powerful im war time, since he is created to coordinate all the armed forces) Finally, there is Field Marshal a.k.a 5 star general. it is a honorary title, and does not have operational command on the Indian Army. till now there is only 2 Field Marshals in Indian Army and 1 Marshal of the Air in Indian Airforce. This is the structure of Indian Army. i hope it helps. correction is welcome😊
