OMG! Has it really been 40+ years?!? I remember binge playing this game on the Ocean City, New Jersey boardwalk during summer break from college! The sound effects are fantastic! They sound really good in this video on high-def headphones! 👍👾

Good old Defender. I used to play it on a Arcade1Up Mortal Kombat 2 Cabinet found on Club Náutico and also played it on RetroArch. This is one of Williams/Midway’s greatest hits.

@@theodorehsu5023 The first Williams game, i have ever played as the original Arcade cabinet, is MORTAL KOMBAT. I saw it for the first time at a former kiosk in Martinlaakso, Vantaa (Finland 🇫🇮) and gave a try for it. Back then, i was 9 or 10 years old 😹🕹️. Now, i still have the legendary compilations MIDWAY ARCADE TREASURES 1 and 2 for my PlayStation 2 😺👍🕹️. I had MORTAL KOMBAT for my Amiga 500.

All classic arcade games were designed to be a challenge but Defender was created to crush a players spirit and grind the remains into a fine talcum-like powder.

I've played a lot of versions of Defender, but very rarely the original arcade. One thing I'm noticing watching you play is that the arcade control scheme allows for quickly turning the ship around to fire behind you without moving in that direction. With a joystick setup where Thrust and Reverse are tied together, that's not possible. You're making really good use of that, well played!

I played this on an arcade in my local shop when it first came out. I remember those days inserting my hard earned 10p into the slot and by the time it settled in the coin box my game was over! I would mentally give myself hi fives if I cleared a round. Was just such a hard game to play. This person is a master at this, nearly went into impossible mode! 10:26

The spiritual sequel, "Strike Force," years later, had Saurians take human colonists to turn them into smaller Saurians. Not only did you need to wipe out their forces on different planets, the final battle had you strike their main planet/base and end their threat once and for all.

Wow!!! I wish I had that skill back in the 80s, the plan was to get as many smart bombs as you could by clocking up your points, he/she lasted for a long time, but once they ran out of smart bombs they gave up or deemed it pointless. The smart bombs are the white rectangular icons under the ships. The smart bombs blew up all the enemy ships and aliens that you saw on the monitor. But they'd reappear and keep coming at you, so you had to use your smart bombs wisely, only in a desperate emergency of being killed, or in an opportunity to accumulate more points for more smart bombs 😅

@@howardsend6589 Sorry: I meant that he doesn't make it look easy, it still looks hard has hell! But he's so good that he manages get through all of that even though it looks so hard. An example to the contrary would be a longplay video I have seen of "Cauldron". That was an almost unbeatably hard game but if I watched the video I wouldn't get the impression that it was so hard. But I played the game a lot back in the 80s and I know how hard it was.
