A actually disagree, from the looks of it the wheel articulation is nothing like the old defender or new wranglers. I would love to see those two wheels still on the ground try pulling the weight up a hill on a loose surface. Wheel articulation makes a massive difference and I think Land rover could have done alot better here

FlySR220 of course it’s not comparable to old Defender or a Wrangler, they have solid front and rear axles which provide much better articulation. That’s why I said “for an ifs and irs veh.” But ifs and irs is much better for daily driving and even some types of offroading- washboard roads for example. So it’s a trade off. Clearly the new Defender has gone the route of sacrificing some offroad worthiness and ability to be fixed in the middle of Africa with some wire, a soup can and duct tape in order to be a much better daily and have more creature comforts. It is clearly not aimed at the same market as the old Defender. But it will be plenty capable for what the majority of people do with their dailies. I know because I have an LR4, which is basically what the new Defender is the successor to, and go offroad with it, so I know just what it can do. And the new Defender likely will outsell the old Defender’s worldwide sales with its US sales alone. If you have any doubt, just look at how the Wrangler sales have gone up as they have made it a more comfortable daily and more road friendly. If you want to see someone really put a new Defender through its paces, check out the vid below. Not a LR course, or with any LR people around. Just a dude doing a way harder trail with the new Defender than most people ever do with any veh. And the one he is driving doesn’t have the locking rear diff. kzbin.info/www/bejne/nKO3gZaeftp3arc

FlySR220 check out the vid below of an LR4 if you want to see more of what the system is capable of. I have the locking rear diff and low range and have had times with opposing front and back wheels off the ground so only 2 wheels touching in loose over hard conditions. Slow, consistent throttle and she just pulls on through. Of course the articulation of a solid front and rear axle veh is better, but with a good full time four wheel drive system (and LR’s that is in the LR4 and new Defender is one of if not the best out there- there’s a reason Ford took it and is now using it in their vehs- including the newly released Bronco) coupled with a locking rear diff, low range and good rubber will get you through so much. When you lock the differentials on any 4x4 it is left to the wheel size, tyre type/size, ground clearance, wheel articulation, weight and power to decide if the vehicle will make up a hill or not. And the new defender hasn't got many of these atall. Its a car, for road driving.

do you guys realise there are rocks in those trails, they are actually driving on rocks with a bit of fluid mud on... except at 5:30 it's not an off-roader it's nor rugged, it's a wannabe like it's targeted customers. how many time do you have to hear the speech about those 3 apparent screw heads on the door panels they kept repeating to realise they are talking it up, the LR/defender legacy of their speech, they killed it of!! no one who needed an off-roader will buy this for utility , there are defenders, in police fire depts militaries and other companies around the world, they don't need gadgets they need the capable rugged off-roader, it could take a flatbed o even a pto. it can be way more comfortable and safe than the old def and retain capabilities. just like all the other brands do. the 2020 ditched the capability for selling point gadgets to seduce well of buyer who want to feel like an adventurer driving on dry dirt twice a year. posers who can't get a disco because it's not a def. no doubt they are a bigger crowd than the historic defender users. ppl who need to pull a load on bad trails without ruining the geometry, or know they'll get high centred and towed out of mud every so often and want something that can take it with no damage will look away. that's what the dif was all about. did mercedes ditch the portal axle on the unimog? is it still a rough muscular ride? the unimog stay a unimog, land rover thinks it's "off-road" jaguar. i'm not even mad i was a land rover guy but land rover is now no more than a badge for stock holders to make profit.

I have a P38, its the only vehicle that I enjoy driving. I drove P38s back in the late 90's around Eastnor and in the Alps on Land Rover journalist trips. Awesome impressive vehicle, and it does make the difficult terrain look easy.

mike clark for what reason? No one is gonna go that deeply into off-roading with this 40k+ cars. You at max can go camping. Times have changed. And I’m probably sure that with the right tires and a good amount of money to repair scratches, these monster machines can do everything the old ones did, with even less effort because the computer will do almost everything for you.

The biggest disappointment with the NEW Defender is the size of the tires that can fit. It appears there’s quite a limitation on maximum tire size without a lift or spacers. I was hoping they’d let you put larger tires on it like you can on a Wrangler or new Bronco.

Biggest problem I see is that the new Defender seems to be prone to a version of "axle tramp" across the body. While the body is supposed to be much stiffer than the chassis on an old Defender, it is most certainly not stiffer than a solid axle. As such, when a wheel loses grip we see a lot of bounce in the body which causes the wheel across to lose grip as well. The vehicle then loses forward momentum quickly. There are some places where this vehicle may well do better than an old Defender (pure ground clearance, standard wading depth etc.) but for out and out grip (especially while towing) on a loose surface, nothing beats having a solid axle. Another issue is the automatic gearbox. There are times when an automatic will out-perform a manual, but there are also times when you need something to move and being able to shock the clutch a little gives that instant move that gets a load started. This is often the example of when you really need a 4x4 to perform in an emergency. A good car-on-stilts SUV like the Range Rover, Discovery, etc.

I’ve had various Land Rovers for over 40 years and loved them all. I’ve never encountered any major issues. The point I was making was that the new Defender will be a great hit but with a different market from the old Defender. The new one will appeal to leisure and lifestyle buyers rather than out and out 4x4 enthusiasts and farmers.

I have two LR cars. But would I have a new one again ??? there are now manufacturers offering 7 year warranty, LR still 3 and problems after that, Plus spares and service costs are sky high. New head light £800 for a cracked plastic lens

I think this is a great vehicle and clearly very capable but I’ve not seen them do anything in this video which your average 4x4 family suv couldn’t do. I’d like to see them give it a proper off road test but can’t help thinking that they’re worried about damaging the paintwork. It’s another Range Rover/Freelander/Discovery.

In fact, in the area where Def did not climb through the mud to the mountain, it initially should not have climbed there, especially on road tires. This site demonstrates the operation of the winch. Не совсем честное видео: так и не показали как Def забрался на горку с грязью. Забрался сам или затащили? И по видео не понятно: а есть разница между Discovery и Defender? Они одинаково шли в одинаковых условиях.

На самом деле на участке, где Def не забрался по грязи на гору он изначально не должен был туда забраться, тем более на дорожной резине. На данном участке демонстрируется работа лебетки. К сожалению, данное видео отсутствует(
