I love landrover and landcruiser, have owned both, and had many others, disco, surf....and now drive a prado 120....landrovers are freaks when it comes to towing, same with range rovers....but just arent reliable enough......best defender i recon to buy would be an ex military with the 3.9 isuzu td.

Stop making excuses the land rover won. The thing is the cruiser has a1hz n/a motor, absolutely rubbish, dependable, but rubbish. They should have tried it with any of the other varients of cruiser, outcome would have been way different. 4.5 inline 6 petrol. 4.0 v6 petrol or the 4.5 v8 diesel, would have dragged the defender with ease.

Its about the gear box... technology in the rover box was designed to pull. These vehiclez have PTO ( pull take-over), hence they provide better traction. Bravo engineers at Land Rover.

I'd bet my new Defender that it wouldn't... :) Tug of war requires 4 things. 1. Power - 100KW more than even the LC 200 V8 2. Traction - It has bigger wheels (std) 3. Traction control - Land Rover owns this technology. 4. Weight - not bad at 2.4 tons. If it doesn't break down on the way to the start line, it'll beat almost all :) (no, not really, I've had zero issues thus far...) G- Class would probably beat both though...

My friend has a land cruiser 200 and my another cousin bought V8 land cruiser 300 I myself have a defender 2021 V6 and it beat both in tug of war I never really faced rellibility issues My those friends are also planning to buy a range

Clearly done the landcruiser driver doesn't understand which diff should be placed where the Landrover is perfectly hitched in terms of weight axles torque ratio cruiser should have hitched in reverse with half a ton load and mopped the floor with that Landrover. cruiser is a work horse axle torque ratio is on the rear axle perfoms amazing under weight while a Landrover axle torque ratio is front constantly weighed in by the motor for it is an appearance vehicle not a workhouse. I am found at the largest preserved inland delta and Kalahari desert towing is my source of income I recover vehicles with lancruiser carry bags and passengers with landrover and I open to a tug of war any day👍

I would think the problem here is that the landy probably drove over the road where the cruiser started pulling from and as landys like to do it leaked a lot of oil where the cruiser started from so it slipped in the landys oil.😁

It wouldn't make much difference, land rovers just have really low gear ratio hence very good at towing and pulling and crawling through deep sand, true the diesel has more grunt and basically never stalls

On paper the LandCruiser has far more power and is the heavier vehicle so should win. But it doesn't. So now we look at traction. The tyres and also, the tyre pressures. Tyre pressure makes a huge difference to traction. Finally, was the Land Rover in low range?
