The US today used an Aegis SM-3 missile to shoot down in ICBM. A lot of people don't understand how big that is, since it was used prior to shoot down short range ballistic missiles in their boost phase. It now can shoot them down in their midcourse phase, the hardest phase to shoot them down in. "The U.S. Missile Defense Agency (MDA), and U.S. Navy sailors aboard an Aegis Ballistic Missile Defense (BMD) System-equipped destroyer intercepted and destroyed a threat-representative Intercontinental Ballistic Missile (ICBM) target with a Standard Missile-3 (SM-3) Block IIA missile during a flight test demonstration in the broad ocean area northeast of Hawaii, Nov. 16,” said a statement from the Missile Defense Agency." "A target ICBM missile launched from Kwajalein Atoll in the Republic of the Marshall Islands in the Pacific Ocean traveled thousands of miles towards the body of water between Hawaii and the West Coast of the United States mainland."

Lasers can't shoot down hypersonic missiles do to a plasma sheath/cloud they get. Plasma burns hotter then a laser, by a lot(in most cases). Lasers would work on subsonic, supersonic, and possibly slower hypersonic missiles just breaking mach 5 as no plasma cloud has built up. The Russians tried calling this a "plasma shield" which is funny since plasma causes something called plasma black out which kills all communications thus making the missile a dud. Sources below: "The ITER plasma will be ten times hotter than the centre of the Sun. In the depths of the Sun where fusion reactions produce the energy that we perceive as light and heat, temperatures reach 15 million °C." "Plasma blackout is not a worry for USA's hypersonic missiles: Pentagon The US Department of Defense is not concerned that its in-development hypersonic missiles could suffer from a communications blackout caused by a cocoon of plasma. Radioing the high-stakes weapons could be critical, for instance, to abort a mission."

For hypersonic anti-ship missiles the US has the SM-6 which is already hypersonic and somewhat classified or they will be hypersonic soon by a simple motor upgrade. This is despite the US preferring subsonic, sea skimming, under the radar horizon, low observable missiles. "On January 17, 2018 the U.S. Navy approved plans to develop the SM-6 Block IB, which will feature a 21-inch rocket motor instead of the current 13.5 inch motor. The new variant will significantly increase the missile's range and speed enabling a hypersonic and extended range anti-surface warfare capability." Im pretty sure the new Constellation-class frigates will not have laser weapons on them as they already have a huge load on them with low output MW motors. While the US hasn't given the MW numbers yet, we can look to the FREMM class it's designed from, which as a main and secondary motor, which produce 32 MW for the main the the smaller one has different variants for different countries each producing under 3MW. It's EW suite already consists of COMBATSS-21 Combat Management System, AN/SPY-6(V)3 Enterprise Air Surveillance Radar, AN/SPS-73(V)18, AN/SLQ-61, and AN/SQQ-89F, among any other classified equipment. The Zumwalt as you stated can have a laser as it produces 78 MW. The Ford Class lasers will be the true big boys as it uses the A1B reactor which produces 700MW... And it has two of them...

Aircraft have more than chaff and flares for countermeasures. Many military aircraft have both offensive and defensive electronic warfare options. The F-18G for example is a specially designed aircraft for electronic warfare for detection, spoofing and jamming that is also armed with anti-radiation missiles for a more permanent solution. Aircraft like the F-15 have installed the EPAWSS that provides the aircraft with advanced electronic warfare solutions. The F-35 carry active, electronically scanned array (AESA) radars with sophisticated electronic attack capabilities, including false targets, network attack, advanced jamming and algorithm-packed data streams. Lasers clearly add an additional dimension to protecting aircraft. However, they are just one element in a extremely complex integrated defensive and offensive environment.

Soooo I dunno if it was actually declassified or not, but there was a picture taken of a test system that I believe was labeled as U.S. Army, wherein they used a laser-induced ion-channel plasma beam to half melt a car used as a target. *This.* I truly believe that the 'extra' reactors they're tossing onto so many new U.S. Navy ships are going to be used eventually for this purpose. Even with a plasma double-layer sheath being induced around a hypersonic aircraft/missile, a truly vast power source like a dedicated nuclear reactor could induce a plasma strong enough to discharge into a target's plasma sheath and overcome the breakdown barrier, discharging into the target body and most likely turning it into a cloud of metal vapor sparkling in the air. Even better, new non-Tokamak fusion solutions are being developed with the ability to be truly compact, light, non-radioactive, and requiring only hydrogen as an onboard fuel source. If interested, see www.aureon.ca for information on their SAFIRE reactor, which I'm proud as an Electric Universe proponent to state is based upon the Electric Sun hypothesis of Prof. Donald Scott, among others. They show a design for a nuclear fusion reactor powering a steam boiler/turbine that looks like it fits in one of those smaller intermodal cargo carriers. Welcome to the 21st Century. 😎

The thing this video glossed over is maximum missile range vs no escape zone range - the range a plane is incapable of outmaneuvering a missile. So while the Meteor missile has a range of 160 km, it’s no escape zone is 60 km. The same with the S-400’s longe range 250 km missiles, its actual no escape zone would be about half that if fired at an AWACS or B-52. So an AWACS with a radar range of 800 km could get within 250 km of an S-400 battery with little danger of being shot down. While a B-52 with 1500 km range cruise missile wouldn’t even have to get within an S-400’s radar range of 600 km!??

Directed Energy Weapons have long been known to have a major concern. Where is the energy coming from? IE: the laser and/or rail guns proposed for the latest US carriers will actually have electricity to spare, because the carriers were designed from the keel to have a LOT of surplus Amps. The only alternative I can see is if the low power pulses proposed here are still accurate enough to pulse-vibrate the target enough to disrupt something inside. IE: not blast a hole in them, just tap them VERY fast.

Next G 3 stream adaptive cycle engines are designed to provide the 30kw required for an effective directed energy weapon...but how to track an incoming low observable missile maneuvering at supersonic speeds long enough to transfer destructive energy is extremely challenging...so may be used to degrade, disable or blind missile homing sensors to reduce their effectiveness...

The missile manufacture could coat their missiles with a reflective coating that has maximum reflectivity at the peak wavelength of the laser. This should render the laser useless or at least reduce its efficacy. To cover the full visual spectrum of any visual laser a specular mirror like coating will also work. Alternatively a highly reflective white coat will cause the laser to be reflected in a Lambertian-like scattering pattern. There are white coatings out there that are >99% reflective (example: the internal coating used in integrating spheres). Hope the smart guys at LHM considered all these potential counter measures. Perhaps reflective coatings are damaged by air friction if the missile travel as high mach speeds.
@Measure-Countermeasure3 жыл бұрын
Reflected light is what directed energy weapons will use for aiming same as radar seeking weapons home in on targets...so directed energy weapon countermeasures are geometric stealth design that deflects energy away from the laser weapon targeting sensor...and energy absorbent coating to mitigate reflected energy as used on stealth cruise missiles for radio frequencies...but optimized for light frequencies...

The main question this leaves me with is whether fourth generation gets with TALWS will be more survivable in general than fifth generation jets without it. The secondary question is whether TALWS - or rather when TALWS - will become the offensive air to air fighter weapon of choice. If TALWS becomes generally deployable, particularly if it can track in multiple directions without having to point the fighter elsewhere, the platform of choice will become the F35, not because of its stealth - which TALWS would neutralize by being external - but because of its enormous networking capability and sensor suite. The F35 will become a far more valuable jet than the F22 because communications and sensing ability will be more valuable both offensively and defensively than extreme stealth or extreme agility. This of course assumes that most enemies would have advanced enough radar to detect stealth. That’s not guaranteed. I would assume Russia would get there first, assuming Russia can afford to. Their military engineering is too far beyond China’s. How politics pans out is another question . At the moment, China is not doing well in a lot of important military hardware areas, needing to reverse engineer what they get from Russia and not being all that effective at that engineering, either from Russia or from secrets stolen from the US, particularly involving stealth. Chinese relations with Russia are lousy at the moment, like Chinese relations with damned near everyone, including unexpected parties like Kazakhstan and Ecuador. (Yes, really,, Ecuador. Can a laser weapon be defeated by coating a missile with a material that reflects the wavelength used by the laser? Basically, can it be defeated with mirrors???
@CherryBoyReloaded3 жыл бұрын
Reverse the logic...lasers like radar aim with energy reflected back by the target...so design the missile to reflect energy away like stealth cruise missiles + RAM = radar or in this case LAM = light absorbing material yo mitigate reflections depending on how much energy can be absorbed by the coating...thus low observability for detection, tracking and targeting...

Better have it point fore and aft.....even run wild weasel missions...to draw S400 and other anti air. 15,000mph vs 186,000 miles a second. I suppose you could even rig something with multiple pods. Power and Range will only increase. Akin to the machine gun..or rocket. The first ones were limited in there effectiveness...technology and manufacturing makes all the difference. For a while...the gun itself was considered obsolete...missle’s only. BIG MISTAKE! They hurriedly had to mount pod mounted machine guns for dogfighting and ground straffing. It’s been on our fighters ever since. Planes are platforms..can only carry so much. However even a Poseidon aircraft could use one for tail protection. Wouldn’t mind seeing four or five pods mounted....be very effective against drone swarms. Power of the beam...disrupts more then blows up anything....but that’s enough.....for now. In space no one can hear you scream.....or limit the effectiveness of laser mounted systems. Not at ground targets so much as....satilites. Or command and control aircraft. At this time....the ship ones can burn paint. Air ones can mess with guidance. And that’s just in the last few years. Hell....even a machinegun from space has tremendous kinetic energy. But is slow compared to Laser. And ammo must be replaced. Light....need only recharge. Both an asset and it’s flaw. Best to have both types. And a few others.

It wasn't stated what type of laser this is. Chemical lasers don't use engine power for the source of their energy, although the number of laser pulses the laser can shoot is limited by onboard chemicals that are consumed when the laser is fired, effectively limiting the number of uses per mission, although even being able to shoot off 3 or 4 laser pulses can mean the difference between life and death. More than likely, it's a chemical laser.

The laser pod shown in this video appears to be unidirectional, so that the fighter would have to physically face its target for the duration of the pulse. Since a target, such as a missile, will rapidly change its position relative to the jet, this would be inadequate, and also doesn't address threats coming from a direction that doesn't come from the jet's front. If this is just a proof-of-concept, that's fine, but it wouldn't work in an actual threat environment. A workable solution would probably need to be a dome that is transparent to the wavelength of the laser, and allows the laser head to move inside the dome to rapidly track moving targets, and address targets that approach from a variety of directions. Such a dome could be shaped in a way to not reflect radar waves, so it could be reasonably stealthy. Currently, a laser small enough to mount on a fighter wouldn't be powerful enough to *instantly* zap a missile. It would require tracking the missile while firing a long duration pulse. This will likely improve over time as the technology develops. Countermeasures to a laser can be as simple as making a missile highly reflective to that wavelength of light. Such mirrored surfaces could reflect as much as 98% of the laser energy. Lasers also don't work well through smoke, as smoke is made of tiny suspended particles that deflect and disperse light. Fog & clouds also attenuate light, but less so than smoke.

The head traverses and aft chasing missiles are short range. This is a planned combat weapon, not proof of concept design. Trust me, they have thought about these issues.

Except that the vast majority of missiles are fired from in front of a fighter....
@williamblaker26283 жыл бұрын
@@tigerpjm Maybe. I don't think there are stats on that. Intercepting aircraft can be launching missiles from any angle. Ground-based SAMs are launched from below. Sea-launched missiles are launched from below. Also, with a non-traversable, fixed mount the aircraft would have to turn to point *exactly* at the missile without wavering even by a fraction of a degree for the duration of the pulse needed to destroy a missile. How long is that pulse? Hard to say. Depends on the missile, depends on the output and frequency of the laser, depends on atmospheric interference, like clouds or water vapor is present. Seconds? Unknown.
@tigerpjm3 жыл бұрын
@@williamblaker2628 You don't need stats, it's just a fact of aircraft generally flying in a forwards direction. Why would an intercepting aircraft be coming from behind? Non-traversible? Who said the laser isn't on a gimbal, like the radar? On the subject of radars, how many aircraft have rear facing radars? Why do you think this is? (Hint: it's where the threats come from)
@williamblaker26283 жыл бұрын
@@tigerpjm look at the laser mounted on the aircraft. It's fixed. Ground and sea launched missiles always come from below the aircraft, never from the front. Yes, the surface which lies generally front ward with respect to the aircraft, but from an angle, not straight and level toward the aircraft; and can be from a variety of angles left or right. As for intercepting fighters, they can be sortied from anywhere. Maybe from exactly dead-on front ward, but more likely from some other angle. If you're flying a mission toward, let's say Moscow, intercepting aircraft don't necessarily have to sortie from Moscow. They can sortie from any air base within range of your flight path, or even multiple bases. Further, SAM sites won't only be in Moscow. They'll be in a variety of locations left and right, and maybe even behind, as some launches may not occur until you've past them.

No material reflects the entire spectrum perfectly, but some specialised mirrors can reflect large ranges of wavelengths. A gold mirror will reflect all visible, ir, uv, radio.
