It would work if it were dry, but if it were slick, you probably wouldn’t be able to control it unless you were really close to the top of the power band. Not to mention that if you are hydroplaning you are already at a loss of traction. If you happen to be in a rwd car, you would let off the throttle, steer in the direction you wish to go, then play with the throttle to keep the drift going.

Not entirely true ;) You do still drive on a tire which has an amount of friction to the ground, you just have less friction to the ground.. In other words, you still have wear on your tires, just less than normal.. If we are talking full on hydroplaning, then yes.. That's to an even lower degree of wear, but that's because you have an airpocket between the compound of the tire and the ground.. But with that, you also have no control over the tire in that exact moment, other than what the balance of the car is going to be once the tire again is able to push away water from it self :-)

I just had a close call as 2/3 lanes had flooded, contacted police, waited at the spot waving down cars to slow down. 40 minutes later, still no response, witness a car spin out at high speed and total the car. lucky that car wasn't surrounded by traffic in the other two lanes, of which have many trucks. called police two more times, they claimed they drove by but I was there the whole time - they didn't. 2 hours of my peasant, civilian ass waving cars to slow down while police do nothing. didn't hear anything from them until a little after I left because the flooding had gone down. Serve and protect, so they say.

My typical reaction to hydroplaning is just continuing to drive normally. Most hydroplane events last only a couple seconds and don't cause the car to become dangerously unbalanced unless you took a corner too fast or something.

Just last week in Houston I hydroplaned on highway59 in my Infiniti g35. I was in the far left lane of a 5 lane highway during heavy rain and rush hour. Mind you everyone is doing at least 60mph. Time literally slowed down the moment I felt the back end shift. I didn't blink once during this time and immediately accepted my fate with about 3seconds before impacting the wall to decide how I would crash as safely as possible. I will say that I got lucky that the back end swung to the right else the massive pile up that could have occurred would have been tragic. All in all the front end hit the wall an the car did a 360, the counter steer within the 3seconds b4 impact brought it back onto the shoulder as it came to a stop. I got a bump on the nose an no one else was involved. During a hydroplane event, only God an split second driver skill can save you.

Push your luck and eventually you'll be shitting your pants. Other people speeding? Stay in the slow lane. I hydroplaned once in my 50+ years and that was all I needed. Depending on tires, keep it under 50 in case you hit a depression with deeper water. There's a spot on a highway where I live that's downhill maybe 20 degrees. You would think water can't possibly build up on a hill like that. You'd be wrong.

I hydroplaned in Austin, Texas in a 1996 Saturn coupe, was going about 70mph on a 4 lane highway, in the furthest to the right lane, thankfully I got the car stopped 1 foot from concrete barrier, perfectly parked towards oncoming traffic on shoulder, it was a super quick jerk to the left right towards the barrier. when it hydroplaned, I’m grateful that people in the other lanes were able to slow down in time, because that car swung across all 4 lanes so fast, I felt like I was loosing control at 100mph, I did bust a brake line in the process, but I managed to drive the car still, back up to Chicago Illinois with barley any brakes. This happened this past December

I'm not taking advice from people who are not professional drivers. Most pros say to just stay off brakes (NO MATTER WHAT CAR) keep your eyes on the road, not where you want to crash, and when you catch traction, then go on about your business. The end. Also what the fuck does it matter if you have ABS or not? Loss of traction is fucking loss of traction. They threw that in there so you will think they know what they're talking about. Gtfoh.

The best thing to do when hydroplaning is to remember your port and starboard and to use the rudder to navigate between the buoys. It's actually pretty simple. The harder part is docking. Also, sonar is obligatory so you don't run into anything unpleasant.

Also for a cruise control scenario, when the car gears down, the sudden boost of power could also cause the tires to break loose. This is especially hazardous if you're in the middle of even the slightest of curves.

Ease off the gas and gently steer into the skid. That's it. Happened to me last year. I live in Germany, where the Autobahn, or highway has no speed limits. So even when it's raining, or snowing, you see people driving at ridiculous speeds. I've seen idiots drive at 140kmh on snow. I was on my way to the airport to drop off a friend. It was raining a lot that day and I do admit.... my tires had to be changed. I was approaching minimal depth. Anyway, even in rainy conditions, I do have to keep up with traffic, so I drove at 110kmh. And then in a corner I felt the car veer off to the right and the tail starting to slide. I eased off the accelerator and kept the skid for about 2-3 seconds, before the car regained traction and then drove the rest of the journey slower. Stuck to the right lanes.

As a rule of thumb, I always try to brake in a straight line with the steering wheel kept straight and avoid braking where I'm required to turn as the rear wheels may end up locking causing the whole car to fishtail. Also, I assume that I don't have any ABS, ESP, or any electronic controls since you may not know you have them or they simply fail.

First time in my life i lost control of my vehicle today. Was headed back to work going doen a hill and a somewhat sharp left. I was going the speed i would have if it was dry since it was just a drizzle. In the blink of an eye on the exit of the corner the rear tires broke loose snapped the car into a slide i let off the gas and contersteered immediatly. At this point it was to late i was already side was at 300° in the opposite lane. My front tires cault the curb at the perfect angle jumped the car up then i seen sparks out the window. I look back to my right steering wheel locked as i passed right by a tree. Miraculously i havnt seen any damage to any suspension or anything else under the car. The camber is right on all tires. As well as toe angle. This is probably one of the luckiest days of my life whoever was watching over me today thanks. Really wish i had my dashcam in to after that. Be careful folks doesnt matter of u have pilot sport+ tires u can still loose it pretty easy if the ground is just right.

Very simple step by step process on what to do in a hydroplane. Trust me I speak from experience. Step 1: Don't hydroplane to begin with and you won't have any problems. You can't get yourself out of a hydroplane once you've started. The only thing you can do is point in the direction of where you want to be going, and hope you regain control in time before you hit anything.

interesting video but the last time i hydroplaned or aquaplaned as we call it over here there was no steering at all. the front wheels were completely floating on the surface of the water. Which is what happens. you might as well not have front wheels. My advice in that situation is to not try to brake or accelerate, instead try to match the wheel speed with your driving speed so the wheel has the best chance of re-gripping the road and when it does you won't suddenly speed up or slow down, causing more potential problems. If you brake and the wheel stops or slows then the water will continue to cause lift as it goes under it. if you accelerate then your wheel will increase the film of water pushed under it. This was in a front wheel drive , the rules for rear wheel are simpler as the front wheels are not under drive. the situation depends on if the front or rear wheels are planing, if it is the front then decelerating slowly (not braking) will help keep the car in a straight line until the front wheels regain grip. if you accelerate then the rear pushing the planing front means a spin or worse for sure. if the rear wheels are planing then try to match wheel speed to moving speed to help the return of traction. Either way don't decide to steer a sudden change of course or move the steering wheel as you may not know which way they are pointing when they hit the road again with potential disastrous results. (front wheel planing).

Anything can hydroplane, but bikes and motorbikes are far less likely because they usually already have absolutely tiny contact patches and while there is much less weight on a bike, it can usually cut through the water because the amount of pressure those tiny contact patches have to take is much lower. It's kinda like diving. the less contact area, the less it will resist and the further into the water it can go.

@polymetric2614
@polymetric2614 9 ай бұрын
that might be more because of how much weight you have in the back. if the bed is empty, there's barely more than couple hundred pounds weighing down the rear wheels, making it easier for them to spin. if you drive a truck in the rain, take corners super light and don't accelerate on a corner. the more weight you have in the back the less of a problem this is but it's still a good habit to be in.

Actually it kind of is how it work. Notice how road bicycles have skinny tires with no more contact area that a quarter? Its because with a 200 lbs person you have about 100lbs/inch for the contact areas. I doubt youd be able to handle 100lbs pressing on any part of your body without it doing some serious damage, but thats one way of getting traction. It just cuts right through the water. Another way would be to increase your surface area, like mountain bike tires or racing cars. If you wanted to ride a road bike on a mountain bike course, you probably could but youd have no traction because it would barely touch the ground in any capacity. Its just different ways of staying in control. You fucking idiot.

The first thing about avoiding hydropaning is to know when it potentially might happen. They do a very good job of expaining that in this video. However, they did not explain what to do if it really happens. If you drive a vehicle without ABS and your wheels lock up, ease off the brakes until the front tires grip up again and start stering the car to avoid a crash. No harsh movements, though. It's best to practice this in a place with a lot of space where you don't put anyone in danger. Most cars have ABS nowadays, so you can push the brake pedal as hard as you can and steer the car no problem. If you start oversteering, steer into the slide as quickly as you can to catch the slide. If you steer too slowly, your car will still rotate. DO NOT BRAKE, as this will make your car rotate even more. Brake once you have corrected the slide. FWD cars can also be straightened using the accelerator. In RWD cars, using the accelerator makes it worse in some cases. If you have a manual RWD car, pushing the clutch in helps with straightening out the car, because it gives the back tires a little more grip. As I said before, it's best to practice these kinds of scenarios so correcting slides and braking becomes something that you do instinctively.

What a useless misleading video! It begins with a point about road being most slippery at the beginning of the rain. This might be true, but the animated picture they show to illustrate it makes no sense: it actually illustrates hydroplaning. Why do they include a misleading picture of hydroplaning when they are talking about something that is not related to hydroplaning at all? Then they start talking about the actual hydroplaning, and resort to describing it using a shoe, hand gestures and a bunch of barely descriptive photographs. Wha...??? Where is your animated hydroplaning picture now, which would be appropriate at this point and which is worth a thousand words (and shoes)? Most people have no idea how and why hydroplaning occurs, and your "shoe" explanation will not help them at all. Why didn't you prepare a simple animation of a car losing contact with the road and starting riding (planing) on water? That would indeed be useful.

+SalveMonesvol On most US roadways, 50km/h is slow enough for a ticket, even in a heavy downpour. That is half the speed limit on most roads.
@SalveMonesvol
@SalveMonesvol 8 жыл бұрын
+FCFordLord Of course I'll never go slower than 1/2 the speed limit, but if the limit is 70mph, I can go 35 without getting a ticket. Going 60 km/h should be perfectly safe if you have good tyres. (I'll edit the original comment to 60, which is more reasonable, ty)

That's 37.28 mph. Sounds reasonable to me in heavy rain. Better safe than sorry and you would NOT get a ticket in the US for that in heavy rain. I go about 40 - 45 depending on the road. Never more than 50 mph on any wet road.

No problem! Denalis are not very common trucks, and they were quite expensive so most people went with the caddy for around the same sticker price.

40 MPH on a wet highway?? WTF!!??? GTFO THE ROAD!!!! You're just gonna get rear ended. Unless you want insurance money, then, by all means, do 40 mph.

I'll drive 40 on the highway if its raining. And if you're stupid enough to rear end me, well..... looks like you'll be paying for my repairs bitch haha

brandonxzombie Actually, I'd probably be buying you a wheelchair or a casket, lol, but if that's what you want, then go for it. And if it can be proven you were only doing 40 MPH in a 60 MPH zone, it could end up being your fault for obstructing traffic. It would have to be heavy rain with very low visibility to justify 40 mph, which would also greatly increase the odds of you getting rear ended. I love how that works. :) And, generally, I just pass people like that, sometimes on the shoulder, if I have to. Then the guy tailgaiting me will rear end you because he won't see you in time, lol. That is a classic scenario that plays out all the time, and I laugh every time somebody tells me it happened to them.

You do realize its a law to drive under the speed limit during heavy rain. To prevent crashes by dumb asses like you. Most cops don't enforce it, but its there, So hit me if you want, but i'm getting a new car paid for by you and you can go ahead and add a speeding ticket to the too. :)

brandonxzombie The law is to drive the speed that conditions permit. Where people get confused is that speed varies greatly with the type of vehicle, condition of the vehicle, and the driver. And tires are the biggest factor, for example, in the past I've use a Yokohama tire which has sections of water channels exceeding 1/2" wide. Almost no other street tire can match that, and the performance will vary accordingly. And, hey, If I'm dumb enough to rear end somebody, I deserve whatever I get. I'll be the first to admit that. But, I also don't feel a bit sorry for people who should not be on the road in the first place. Somebody *will* rear end you, and it will probably be an uninsured Mexican national. Good luck with that.

+brandonxzombie If you drive 40 in a 60MPH zone while raining in anything less than a tropical storm; 1; Have your hazards on 2; Be prepared to be pulled over. Expect a warning at minimum, however anything more than 15 usually warrents an obstructing traffic charge. You and your automobile should be able to handle the speed limit in any condition where visibility is not comprimised, that includes 55-75mph in a heavy downpour.

You won't hydroplane if you're going to slow to do so, instead of teaching these complex techniques to new drivers or misinformed drivers, just SLOW DOWN follow the big orange signs that tell you there is a hydroplane risk, who cares if everyone else is going 90 let them die, easy as fuck to counter steer a hydroplane at 30mph, not shit you can do when going 90 but hold on for death to come.

If you hydroplane: 1) Shit pants 2) Swear loudly 3) Crash car ..it's really that easy. Steps 2 and 3 can be interchanged--try it a few times to find out which works best for you.
